What this calculator does
A janma kundli is the map of the sky at birth: which sign was rising (the lagna), and where the nine grahas stood, placed in twelve houses counted from the lagna. This generator computes all of it from your date, time and place, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and draws it in the North or South Indian style. Under the chart, a table lists every graha with its sign, degree, nakshatra and pada, house, and navamsa sign.
How is the kundli calculated?
- Your local birth time becomes universal time through the birthplace's time zone.
- The positions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are computed for that instant, and Rahu as the mean lunar node with Ketu opposite.
- The rising degree is found from local sidereal time, the latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic.
- The Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted from every position, and each is assigned a sign, nakshatra and house.
The planetary positions agree with the Swiss Ephemeris to within an arcsecond; the ascendant to a fraction of one.
Worked example
Born 14 August 1990 at 12:00 in Mumbai. Lagna 16°14′ Tula; Moon 5°34′ Vrishabha in Krittika, the eighth house; Sun 27°30′ Karka in the tenth house. The North Indian drawing puts Tula's number 7 in the top diamond; the South Indian drawing marks the Tula cell with a corner stroke.
Reading the drawing
- Abbreviations: Su Sun, Mo Moon, Ma Mars, Me Mercury, Ju Jupiter, Ve Venus, Sa Saturn, Ra Rahu, Ke Ketu; As marks the ascendant. (R) means retrograde.
- Sign numbers: 1 Mesha to 12 Meena, in both styles.
- Houses: count from the lagna's sign. In the North Indian style the first house is the top diamond and the houses run anticlockwise; in the South Indian style count clockwise from the marked cell.
How to read your result
Start with the three names in the headline: the lagna for manner and outlook, the Moon's rashi for the mind, the nakshatra for the finer texture. The table is for anyone who wants to go deeper or to take the chart to an astrologer; every number on it can be checked against any standard software. The chart describes; it does not predict.
