What this calculator does

The Kua number (कुआ नंबर) turns your year of birth and gender into a number from 1 to 9 and a group, East or West. Each number has four favourable directions, one for each of prosperity, health, relationships and growth. The calculator shows all four and the year it used. Lesson 13 explains the system.

How is the Kua number calculated?

1. Take the birth year. If the birthday is before 4 February, use the previous year. A birth on 4 February itself counts in the new year.
2. Add the year's digits and reduce to one digit. Call it n.
3. Men: reduce 11 − n. Women: reduce 4 + n.
4. If the result is 5, men take 2 and women take 8.

Worked example

Born 14 August 1990:

• 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1, so n = 1
• Man: 11 − 1 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1. Kua 1, East group.
• Woman: 4 + 1 = 5, which becomes 8. Kua 8, West group.

The "How it was calculated" line shows the same steps, for the woman "1990 → 1; 4 + 1 → 5 → 8".

A second example: a January birthday

Born 20 January 2001:

• Before 4 February, so the year used is 2000. 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2, so n = 2.
• Man: 11 − 2 = 9. Kua 9, East group.
• Woman: 4 + 2 = 6. Kua 6, West group.

The card adds the note "Born before 4 February, so the previous solar year (2000) is used." Had 2001 been used, n would be 3, giving the man Kua 8 in the West group and the woman Kua 7. The boundary changed the man's group, which is why it matters for January and early February birthdays.

One more case: a man born in 1995. 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 24, 2 + 4 = 6, and 11 − 6 = 5, which becomes 2. The card shows "1995 → 6; 11 − 6 → 5 → 2".

How to read your result

1. The number and headline: your Kua and its group, East or West.
2. Group paragraph. The four directions your group shares.
3. Boundary note, only when the previous year was used.
4. Facts. Prosperity, health, relationships and personal growth, each with its direction, then the year used. For Kua 9 that is east, south-east, north and south.
5. How it was calculated: year, year digit, formula and any 5 substitution.

The Kua card has no planet, strengths or Vedic panels, because the Kua is read through directions rather than the 1 to 9 profiles. Use the directions as preferences when you have a choice, such as which way a desk faces. The health direction is a traditional label, not medical advice.

Common mistakes

• Ignoring the year boundary. A birth on 20 January 2001 is read with 2000.
• Mixing up the shortcut formulas. Older books give one rule for 1900s births and another for 2000s births, using only the last two digits. Applying the 1900s rule to a 2001 birth gives a man 9 instead of 8. Adding all four digits of the year avoids this.
• Using the Vedic direction from another card. The direction in the Moolank and Bhagyank Vedic panel belongs to the ruling planet. Your Kua directions are separate.
• Treating the other group's directions as harmful. The card lists favourable directions only. Partners in different groups are common.

Where do numerologists disagree?

Mainly on the year boundary. This site uses a fixed 4 February, set as a switch in its configuration. Some practitioners use the exact solar date, which can fall on 3, 4 or 5 February, some use the lunar new year, which moves between late January and mid-February, and some ignore the boundary. If you were born near the start of February, check both years. The Kua is also placed on your Lo Shu grid.
