What this calculator does

Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, measured in the sidereal zodiac that Vedic astrology uses. It is the sign an Indian astrologer means when they ask "what is your rashi", and the one that names your nakshatra and starts your dasha cycle. The calculator finds the Moon's position for your date, time and place, subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa, and names the sign, with its degree, lord, element and the nakshatra within it.

How is the rashi calculated?

1. Your local birth time is converted to universal time using the birthplace's time zone, including historical zones for older births.
2. The Moon's apparent position along the ecliptic is computed for that instant.
3. The Lahiri ayanamsa for that date (about 23°44′ in 1990, 24°13′ in 2026) is subtracted to move from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac.
4. The result is divided by 30°: 0° to 30° is Mesha, 30° to 60° Vrishabha, and so on.

Worked example

Born 14 August 1990 at 12:00 in Mumbai. The Moon's tropical longitude was 59°18′; minus the ayanamsa of 23°44′ gives 35°34′ sidereal, which falls in Vrishabha (Taurus), 5°34′ into the sign, in the nakshatra Krittika, pada 3.

How to read your result

The rashi reading describes the mind and emotional style in the tradition. The lord tells you which graha "owns" your Moon, the element and quality give its texture, and the nakshatra narrows it further. It is one factor of a full chart, not the whole of it, and nothing here predicts events.
