Mangal dosha explained
What makes a chart Manglik, the houses from the lagna and the Moon, the common cancellations, and why the dosha is matched, not read alone. Lesson 14.

Mangal dosha, the Manglik condition, is the placement of Mars in certain houses of the birth chart, read in the tradition as a forceful nature that bears on marriage. The rule is simple, the exceptions are many, and the practical use is in matching two charts rather than in judging one. The Manglik calculator applies the plain rule and says exactly that.
The rule
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna. The reasoning in the texts: those houses touch the self (1), family (2), home (4), spouse (7), longevity (8) and bed (12), and Mars, the planet of heat and force, is read as disturbing them.
The same count is often made from the Moon, and sometimes from Venus, giving a graded picture: Mars in a dosha house from all three reference points is read as the full form, from one as mild.
Cancellations
The tradition never meant the rule to stand alone. Common cancellations:
- Mars in its own signs (Mesha, Vrishchika) or exaltation (Makara).
- Mars in Simha or Kumbha, or in the 2nd in Mithuna or Kanya, or in the 12th in Vrishabha or Tula, and similar sign-specific exceptions.
- Jupiter aspecting or conjunct Mars.
- Both partners Manglik, which is read as the dosha matching itself.
- The native past the age of 28, after which many astrologers treat the dosha as spent.
Different texts give different lists, which is why this site states the rule and leaves the exceptions to an astrologer.
In matching
Kundli matching checks Mangal dosha for both charts after the guna score. A Manglik matched with a Manglik is the classical resolution; a Manglik matched with a non-Manglik is where astrologers look hardest at cancellations. The Kundli matching tool shows the dosha line for each chart when the birth times are known.
Worked example
In the reference chart (14 August 1990, 12:00, Mumbai) Mars is in Mesha, the 7th house from the Tula lagna, and the 12th from the Vrishabha Moon: Manglik by both counts, the full form. But Mars is in Mesha, its own sign, which most lists count as a cancellation, and the native is past 28. An astrologer would call this a technical Manglik with strong mitigation; the calculator shows the rule and says the rest is a reading.
