What this calculator does

Guna milan is the traditional first screen for a marriage match in North Indian practice: eight tests, each worth a few points, scored from the two Moon positions and summed out of 36. This calculator computes both Moon positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa, scores every koota from the classical tables, flags the doshas the tradition singles out (nadi, bhakoot, gana), and, when the birth times are known, adds a Mangal dosha check for each chart.

How is the score calculated?

1. Find each person's Moon sign and nakshatra.
2. Varna compares the spiritual class of the Moon signs; Vashya the sign groups (quadruped, human, water, wild, insect); Bhakoot the distance between the signs; Graha Maitri the friendship of the sign lords.
3. Tara counts from each nakshatra to the other; Yoni compares the nakshatra animals; Gana the temperaments (deva, manushya, rakshasa); Nadi the constitutions (aadi, madhya, antya).
4. Add the points. The table shows each koota's value for both sides and its score.

Worked example

Boy born 14 August 1990, 12:00, Mumbai (Moon in Vrishabha, Krittika); girl with Moon at 10° Karka in Pushya. Same yoni (sheep) gives 4 of 4; gana is Rakshasa against Deva, 1 of 6; nadi differs (antya and madhya), 8 of 8; Venus and the Moon are not friends, 0.5 of 5; the signs are three apart, 7 of 7. The score adds up from the eight rows exactly as the table shows.

How to read your result

The headline gives the band the tradition assigns to the total. Look next at any koota that scored zero: nadi and bhakoot carry the most weight and have well-known exceptions that an astrologer applies by hand. Guna milan is a screen, not a verdict, and it says nothing about two people who have met.
