What this calculator does

Vimshottari is the most used timing system in Vedic astrology. It assigns every year of life to a planetary period, a mahadasha, and every stretch within it to a sub-period, an antardasha. The calculator finds your birth nakshatra from the Moon's sidereal position, starts the cycle from its lord, and lists every mahadasha and antardasha from birth to 120 years, marking the ones running today.

How is the dasha calculated?

  1. Find the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth (Lahiri ayanamsa) and its nakshatra.
  2. The nakshatra's lord gives the first mahadasha. The fraction of the nakshatra the Moon had still to travel, times that lord's years, is the balance at birth.
  3. The remaining mahadashas follow in the fixed order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, cycling from wherever the first lord sits.
  4. Each mahadasha is split into nine antardashas, starting with its own lord, each lasting the mahadasha's years times the sub-lord's years divided by 120.

Worked example

Born 14 August 1990 at 12:00 in Mumbai, the Moon is at 35°34′, in Krittika, whose lord is the Sun. Two thirds of Krittika had passed, so the Sun mahadasha had about two of its six years left: it ran until August 1992. Then the Moon (ten years, to 2002), Mars (seven, to 2009), and Rahu (eighteen, to 2027). On 29 October 2026 the chart is in Rahu mahadasha, Mars antardasha, the last sub-period before Jupiter's mahadasha begins.

How to read your result

Read the mahadasha for the long theme and the antardasha for its current colour; the reading under each period says what the tradition associates with that lord. Dasha changes are commonly felt as shifts of emphasis, not as events on a date. Use the timeline as a calendar for reflection, and bring it to an astrologer if you want a full interpretation.
