Lagna: the ascendant and why birth time matters

What the rising sign is, how it is computed from time and place, why it changes every two hours, and how the lagna lord sets up the chart. Lesson 7.

The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and in a Vedic chart it is house one: every other house is counted from it, the lagna lord is read as the key planet of the chart, and the lagna sign describes how the person meets the world. It is the one placement that depends on the time and the place of birth, and it is the reason a kundli cannot be cast without them.

What the lagna describes

Where the Moon sign is the inner style, the lagna is the outer one: appearance, manner, first impression, physical energy, the way a person acts on the world. The twelve rising readings on this site (shown on the Lagna calculator's card) are this outer reading of each sign. A Tula lagna is read as gracious and partnership-minded, a Vrishchika lagna as reserved and intense, and so on.

How the lagna is computed

  1. Convert the birth time to universal time and then to sidereal time, the sky's own clock.
  2. Add the birthplace's longitude to get local sidereal time, which is the right ascension of the meridian.
  3. Combine the meridian with the latitude and the tilt of the Earth's axis to find the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon.
  4. Subtract the ayanamsa and divide by 30° for the sign.

The whole zodiac rises once a day, so each sign rises for about two hours, more for the signs of long ascension at a given latitude and less for the short ones.

The lagna lord

Once the lagna is known, its lord becomes the chart's representative. Astrologers read the lagna lord's sign, house and company before almost anything else: a lagna lord in a strong house with friends is read as a person who can carry their chart; a weak or afflicted lagna lord shifts the reading toward difficulty that must be worked through.

Worked example

Born 14 August 1990 at 12:00 in Mumbai (19.08° N): local sidereal time gives a tropical ascendant of 219°58′; minus the ayanamsa of 23°44′ that is 196°14′, which is 16°14′ of Tula. The lagna lord is Venus, which sits in Karka in the tenth house with the Sun and Jupiter, a placement the tradition reads as a public-facing, well-supported chart. Had the birth been at 14:00, the lagna would have been Vrishchika and the whole house layout different.

Lagna, Moon and Sun together

Readers of a chart use three reference points, the lagna, the Moon and the Sun, and look at the houses from each. The lagna is primary; the Moon shows the same houses from the mind's point of view; the Sun from the point of view of the self. When all three agree about something, the reading is strong.
