Sade Sati: Saturn's seven and a half years
What Sade Sati is, its three phases as Saturn crosses the signs around the Moon, the dhaiya transits, and how to read it without fear. Lesson 17.

Sade Sati is the period of about seven and a half years during which Saturn transits the three signs centred on the natal Moon: the sign before it, the Moon sign itself, and the sign after. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, hence the three phases and the name, "seven and a half". It is the most talked-about transit in Jyotish and the most misunderstood.
The three phases
| Phase | Saturn in | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| First | The 12th sign from the Moon | Expense, mental load, preparation |
| Second | The Moon sign | Pressure on mind and body, the core test |
| Third | The 2nd sign from the Moon | Easing, effects on family and finances |
The dhaiya, or small panoti, is Saturn's two-and-a-half-year transit of the 4th or 8th sign from the Moon, read as a lesser version concerned with home or with health and change.
Why Saturn and the Moon
The Moon is the mind; Saturn is weight, duty and time. Saturn over the Moon is read as the mind carrying weight: responsibility arrives, shortcuts stop working, and what is not solid gives way. The tradition's consistent description is of a period of work whose results come later, and many people describe their Sade Sati years as the ones in which they grew up.
How it is calculated
- Find the natal Moon's sidereal sign.
- Follow Saturn's sidereal position forward from birth and find every stretch when it is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from the Moon.
- Group consecutive stretches into one Sade Sati, keeping the exact dates of retrograde dips.
- Mark the 4th and 8th signs as dhaiya.
Reading it honestly
Three things modify the reading: Saturn's dignity in the signs it crosses (Saturn is exalted in Tula and in its own signs in Makara and Kumbha, where the period is read as constructive), the dasha running at the time (a Saturn or Rahu dasha coinciding with Sade Sati is read as heavier), and the natal Moon's strength. None of this is a prediction of events, and the site makes none.
Worked example
Born 14 August 1990, 12:00, Mumbai, Moon in Vrishabha. Saturn entered Mesha in April 1998, crossed Vrishabha from June 2000 and left Mithuna in 2005, with retrograde dips back into Vrishabha in early 2003: the first Sade Sati, in childhood. The next begins in June 2027, when Saturn enters Mesha, with the second phase over the Moon around 2030 to 2032, and the third ending about 2035.
