A kundli has twelve bhavas, or houses, counted from the lagna, and each governs an area of life: the self, wealth, siblings, home, children, enemies, partnership, longevity, fortune, career, gains and loss. In the whole-sign system every sign is a house, so a planet's house is simply its sign's distance from the lagna, and reading a chart means reading which grahas sit in which houses and where each house's lord has gone.
The twelve houses
| House | Sanskrit name | Governs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tanu | Self, body, appearance, overall life |
| 2 | Dhana | Wealth, speech, family, food |
| 3 | Sahaja | Siblings, courage, effort, short journeys |
| 4 | Sukha | Home, mother, property, comfort, education |
| 5 | Putra | Children, intellect, creativity, romance |
| 6 | Ripu | Enemies, illness, debt, service, competition |
| 7 | Kalatra | Spouse, partnership, business partners |
| 8 | Ayu | Longevity, transformation, inheritance, the hidden |
| 9 | Dharma | Fortune, father, teachers, faith, long journeys |
| 10 | Karma | Career, status, public life |
| 11 | Labha | Gains, income, friends, elder siblings |
| 12 | Vyaya | Loss, expense, foreign lands, sleep, liberation |
Groups of houses
- Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10): the angles; planets here act strongly and visibly.
- Trikonas (1, 5, 9): the houses of merit and fortune; benefics here are read as blessings.
- Dusthanas (6, 8, 12): the houses of difficulty; planets here express through struggle.
- Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11): the growing houses, where malefics are said to improve with time.
Whole-sign houses
Jyotish's oldest house system is also the simplest: the sign of the lagna is house one, and each following sign is the next house, regardless of the lagna's degree within its sign. This site uses it throughout. Other systems (equal, Placidus, Sripati) divide the sky differently and can move a planet near a boundary into a neighbouring house; they are refinements, not replacements.
House lords
Each house is owned by the lord of its sign, and the lord's placement links two areas of life. The lord of the 7th in the 10th connects partnership with career; the lord of the 2nd in the 12th connects money with expense or foreign places. Reading these links is the heart of chart interpretation (lesson 11).
Worked example
With Tula rising, Vrishchika is the 2nd house, Dhanu the 3rd, and so on round to Kanya as the 12th. In the 14 August 1990 chart, Karka is the 10th house and holds the Sun, Jupiter, Venus and Ketu: four grahas in the house of career, including the lagna lord Venus. The Moon in Vrishabha is in the 8th; Mars in Mesha is in the 7th, which lesson 14 returns to.
