The kitchen: fire in its corner
Where the tradition puts the kitchen and why, stove, sink and fridge inside it, what to do with a north-east kitchen, and open kitchens. Lesson 8.

The kitchen rule is the most consistent one across every school of Vastu, because every reading agrees on it: fire belongs in the fire corner, the south-east. The second choice is the north-west, air's corner, which fire tolerates. The placements the tradition asks to balance are the north-east, water's corner, and the exact centre.
The kitchen's zone
| Zone | Reading |
|---|---|
| South-east | The kitchen's own corner; favourable |
| North-west | Acceptable; the second choice in most schools |
| East, south | Acceptable with the stove toward the south-east side |
| South-west | Avoided: fire in the earth corner, which the tradition keeps heavy and cool |
| North-east | Avoided: fire in the water corner, the most common question |
| Centre | Avoided: the brahmasthan is kept open |
The Room placement checker gives this verdict for any zone, with the tradition's reasoning in a line.
Inside the kitchen
The room's zone is the first reading; the arrangement inside it is the second, and it is the one you can usually change.
- Stove: in the south-east of the kitchen, placed so the cook faces east. On a counter against the east wall this comes naturally; on a south wall, the cook faces south, which the tradition ranks lower.
- Sink and water: north or north-east of the kitchen, away from the stove. A gap of even a counter width between stove and sink is what practitioners ask for.
- Fridge: south-west or west of the kitchen, as a heavy object, or the north-west; not the north-east.
- Storage: heavy jars and grain in the south or west; nothing heavy on the north-east shelves.
- Windows and exhaust: east or north, for morning light and for heat to leave.
When the room is in the wrong place
Most kitchens in flats are where the builder put them. If yours is in the north-east:
- Place the stove on the east or south-east wall of the room, as far from the north-east corner as the room allows.
- Face east when cooking.
- Keep the north-east corner of the kitchen itself empty, clean and light: no dustbin, no gas cylinder, no heavy storage.
- Keep water (sink, filter, drinking water) in the north or north-east of the room, where it belongs.
None of this is demolition; all of it is what a practitioner would ask for first. The tradition reads a kitchen handled this way as balanced, not as fixed, and that is the honest word for it.
Worked example
A flat's kitchen is a 3 m by 2.5 m room in the south-east zone, with the stove on the north wall so the cook faces north, and the sink beside it. The zone is right; the arrangement is what to change. Moving the stove to the east wall, with the sink staying on the north wall, puts the cook facing east and a counter's width between fire and water, which is the tradition's ideal.
