Ardra is the sixth of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 6°40′ to 20° of Mithuna (66°40′ to 80° of the sidereal zodiac), ruled by Rahu and presided over by Rudra, the storm. Its name means "moist" or "fresh", the wetness the storm leaves behind, and its character is the storm that clears the air.

This page covers its deity and symbol, its nature, the four padas, the Moon placed in it at birth, the Rahu dasha that follows, work, relationships, compatibility and muhurta. The panel above lists its correspondences.

Rudra and the teardrop

The deity, Rudra, is the storm god of the Rig Veda, the roarer, who later became identified with Shiva. He is fierce and unpredictable, yet the same hymns call him the bearer of healing remedies, the best of physicians. One traditional derivation links his name to the root rud, to cry. Rudra breaks what is stale so that something truer can grow, and heals as readily as he strikes.

The symbol, a teardrop, fits both sides. Tears come with grief, and also with relief; rain comes with the storm, and the land is green afterwards. Ardra is the nakshatra of feeling something fully and coming out clearer on the other side.

In the sky Ardra is usually identified with the bright red star at Orion's shoulder, just behind Mrigashira, the deer's head. In Tamil Nadu the night the Moon passes through Ardra in the month of Margazhi is kept as Arudra Darshanam, a festival of Shiva as the cosmic dancer. In many regional farming calendars the Sun's passage through Ardra, in late June, is linked with the arrival of the monsoon rains.

The lord, Rahu, adds hunger for experience and a pull towards the unconventional. Rudra and Rahu together give a nakshatra that does not accept the surface of things.

The nature of Ardra

In the language of kundli matching, Ardra is:

  • Manushya gana. The human temperament: practical, mixed, moved by circumstance and by people, neither idealistic like deva nor fiercely independent like rakshasa.
  • Dog yoni. The dog is loyal, alert and persistent; it notices strangers and keeps watch. Ardra shares the dog yoni with Mula.
  • Aadi nadi. The first of the three nadis. Nadi is used in matching only, where two people of the same nadi score zero on that koota.

The strengths show as behaviour:

  • Seeing through pretence. Ardra notices when words and actions do not match, and it says so.
  • Depth of feeling. Joy, grief and anger are felt fully, and that depth makes Ardra unusually understanding of other people's pain.
  • A searching intellect. In Mercury's sign, the storm becomes questions: why, how, and what is really going on.
  • Rebuilding. After a crisis Ardra often clears the ground and builds something better than what was there.

The shadow side is the storm without an end:

  • Emotional weather. Moods can arrive suddenly and with force.
  • Sharp words. The honesty that clears the air can also cut, especially in the heat of the moment.
  • Restlessness. A sense that things must be shaken up even when they are working.
  • Dwelling. Turning a loss or an injustice over long after it could be acted on.

The growth edge, in the site's reading, is steadiness after the storm: letting the air clear, then building calmly on what the storm revealed.

The four padas

Each pada is 3°20′ and corresponds to one navamsa. All four of Ardra's padas fall in Mithuna:

The four padas of Ardra: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.

PadaDegreesNavamsaSyllable
1Mithuna 6°40′ – 10°00′DhanuKu
2Mithuna 10°00′ – 13°20′MakaraGha
3Mithuna 13°20′ – 16°40′KumbhaNga
4Mithuna 16°40′ – 20°00′MeenaChha

Pada 1 (Dhanu navamsa), 6°40′ to 10° Mithuna. Jupiter's navamsa turns Ardra's questions towards meaning: philosophy, teaching, law and belief. The storm here is a search for what is right.

Pada 2 (Makara navamsa), 10° to 13°20′ Mithuna. Saturn's navamsa gives discipline and patience. This pada turns upheaval into structure, and is often practical, hard-working and good at long, demanding projects.

Pada 3 (Kumbha navamsa), 13°20′ to 16°40′ Mithuna. Saturn's other navamsa, more collective and more inventive. Systems, technology, networks and causes that serve many people suit this pada.

Pada 4 (Meena navamsa), 16°40′ to 20° Mithuna. Jupiter's water navamsa is the teardrop side of Ardra: compassionate, imaginative and deeply moved by others' suffering.

The naming custom gives the syllables Ku, Gha, Nga and Chha to padas 1 to 4. Few names begin with Nga, so families often adapt it. It is a tradition, not a rule, as the nakshatra lesson explains.

Moon in Ardra

When the Moon is in Ardra at birth, it is the janma nakshatra, the birth star that names the person and starts the dasha. The Moon is the mind in Jyotish, so Ardra describes a mind of strong currents: thinking hard, feeling hard and unwilling to settle for an easy answer.

Every Ardra Moon is in Mithuna, a sign ruled by Mercury, which the Moon counts as a friend. The combination gives quick, analytical thinking carried by deep feeling. An Ardra Moon often learns fast, argues well and wants to understand the reasons behind things, including its own emotions. It is drawn to subjects others find difficult or uncomfortable.

The emotional rhythm is the storm's: long spells of focus or calm, then a sudden release. People close to an Ardra Moon learn that the outburst passes and that what follows is often clearer and kinder. What unsettles it most is dishonesty and being told to feel less. What steadies it is a place to put the intensity: study, craft, service, or work that solves real problems.

When the lagna degree falls in Ardra, the same qualities show in manner: a direct, searching gaze, frank speech and an approach that questions before it accepts.

The Rahu dasha at birth

Vimshottari dasha begins from the lord of the birth nakshatra, so a Moon in Ardra starts life in the Rahu mahadasha, 18 years in full and the second longest after Venus. Only the part of that period matching the fraction of Ardra still to run remains at birth: that fraction times 18 years is the balance.

A Moon at the start of Ardra leaves almost all 18 years of Rahu; a Moon near the end leaves only weeks. After Rahu come Jupiter (16 years) and Saturn (19 years).

Rahu signifies ambition, the unconventional, foreign lands, technology and sudden change, and its dasha is read through those themes and through Rahu's placement in the individual chart. Rahu has no sign of its own on this site; some schools exalt it in Mithuna, where Ardra lies, and others in Vrishabha. The Rahu page explains the node in full, and the Vimshottari lesson explains how periods are read. A dasha describes themes coming forward; it does not forecast events.

Work and money

Ardra does well where the work is hard, the questions are real and the truth matters. Typical fits, as tendencies rather than prescriptions:

  • Research and analysis: science, data, investigation, and any field where finding the real cause is the job.
  • Technology: software, engineering and new systems, which suit Rahu and Mercury's sign alike.
  • Crisis and care: emergency work, healthcare, counselling and social work, where Rudra's healing side shows.
  • Words with an edge: journalism, criticism, debate and writing about difficult subjects.

What wears Ardra down is work that hides problems. With money, the pattern can be uneven, with sudden changes in either direction; a steady reserve and simple rules for spending help this nakshatra most.

Relationships

In relationships Ardra is honest, loyal and deeply engaged. It wants a real connection, not a polite one, and it will say what it feels. Partners rarely have to guess where they stand.

The friction comes from the storm. Ardra may speak at the height of a feeling and regret the words later, or need to talk something through when the partner needs quiet. A partner who can hear plain truth without taking every storm as a final word suits Ardra well. The growth edge applies directly: wait for the air to clear, then say the important thing calmly.

Compatibility

The table below shows, for each of the 27 nakshatras as a partner's birth star, how Ardra scores on the four nakshatra-based kootas:

Tara (3 points) counts from one birth star to the other, then divides by nine; remainders of 3, 5 and 7 are unfavourable. It is counted both ways: favourable both ways scores 3, one way 1.5. For Ardra, nine stars score the full 3: Mrigashira, Ardra itself, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. The other eighteen score 1.5.

Yoni (4 points) compares the nakshatra animals. Ardra's dog scores 4 with the other dog star, Mula, and with Ardra itself, and 2 with many animals, among them the horse, elephant, serpent, cat and cow. The dog and the deer are the classic natural enemies, so the pairings with Anuradha and Jyeshtha score 0.

Gana (6 points) compares temperaments. Manushya with manushya scores 6; manushya with deva scores 5 or 6, depending on which partner is which in the classical table; manushya with rakshasa scores 0, read as a difference of temperament rather than a fault.

Nadi (8 points) scores 0 when both partners share a nadi, which is called Nadi dosha. Ardra is aadi, as are Ashwini, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Astrologers check the classical exceptions before treating it as a bar, and schools differ on which exceptions apply.

These four are half of the eight Ashtakoot kootas; the rest come from the Moon signs. A score describes ease and friction, never a verdict on two people. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.

Ardra in muhurta

In muhurta, the choice of a good time, Ardra is one of the four sharp (tikshna) nakshatras, with Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula. Sharp stars are traditionally chosen for decisive or demanding work: ending what is finished, separating what should be separate, confronting a hard problem head on, and tasks that need concentrated force. They are not bad days; they are days for work that has to cut cleanly. For gentle beginnings such as weddings, tradition prefers other classes.

A muhurta is never one factor: the tithi, weekday, lagna and the person's own chart are weighed together, as the muhurta lesson explains. The next nakshatra, Punarvasu, brings the return of the light after Ardra's storm.

A worked example

Take a Moon at 15°00′ Mithuna, which is 75°00′ of the sidereal zodiac. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.

  1. Nakshatra. Ardra runs from 6°40′ to 20° of Mithuna, so 15°00′ is in Ardra.
  2. Distance into the nakshatra. 15°00′ − 6°40′ = 8°20′.
  3. Pada. Pada 3 runs from 6°40′ to 10°00′ of the nakshatra, so 8°20′ is in pada 3, which in Mithuna runs from 13°20′ to 16°40′.
  4. Navamsa and syllable. Ardra's padas map to Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, so pada 3 is Kumbha navamsa. The traditional naming syllable is Nga.
  5. Birth dasha. The lord is Rahu, 18 years. The Moon has covered 8°20′ of 13°20′, that is 500′ of 800′, or 0.625 of the nakshatra. The balance is (1 − 0.625) × 18 = 6.75 years, that is 6 years and 9 months of Rahu dasha remaining at birth, followed by Jupiter's 16 years.

The reading: a quick Mithuna Moon with Ardra's depth and honesty, turned by the Kumbha navamsa towards systems, ideas and causes larger than one person. The growth edge is still Ardra's: steadiness after the storm.
