Bharani is the second of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Mesha, ruled by Venus (Shukra) in the Vimshottari sequence, with Yama as its deity and the yoni, the womb, as its symbol. It follows Ashwini and gives way at 26°40′ to Krittika, and it lies wholly inside Mesha.
This page covers Bharani's deity and symbol, its nature, the four padas, what it means as a birth star, the dasha it starts, its place in matching and muhurta, and a worked example. The panel above lists its correspondences, and the nakshatra lesson explains the system as a whole.
Deity and symbol
Yama appears in the Rig Veda as the first mortal to die, the one who found the path to the world of the ancestors and became its king. Later tradition calls him Dharmaraja, the keeper of dharma, who weighs each life fairly. In the Katha Upanishad he is a teacher: the boy Nachiketa comes to his door, and Yama, after testing him, explains the nature of the self. In Jyotish, then, Yama stands less for an ending than for order, accountability and the passage from one state to another.
The symbol is the yoni, the womb, the place where life is carried and brought forth. The name Bharani is usually traced to the root bhri, to bear or carry. Put the two together and Bharani is the nakshatra of carrying: a responsibility, a creative work, a new life, the weight of a decision. It holds both thresholds, birth and passing, and that is why the site describes it as carrying the weight of beginnings and endings. Its summary is intense, responsible, creative.
Nature: gana, yoni and nadi
Three labels from the matching tables describe Bharani's temperament.
- Gana: Manushya. The human gana is read as practical and balanced between ideals and appetites. Bharani is very much of this world: it wants things to be real, felt and done.
- Yoni: elephant. The elephant is strong, patient and has a long memory, and is formidable when roused. Bharani shares the elephant yoni with Revati.
- Nadi: Madhya. The middle nadi, traditionally linked with the pitta quality of heat and intensity.
The strengths show as behaviour. Bharani natives carry responsibility without being asked, stay loyal through difficult times and are willing to talk about the subjects others avoid. They often do their best creative work under pressure, and they have a strong sense of what is fair.
The shadow side is intensity without a limit: all-or-nothing feelings, appetite for pleasure or work that runs past what is good for them, stubbornness, and a strict standard that is applied to others as hard as to themselves. The site's reading names the growth edge in one word: restraint.
The four padas
The four padas of Bharani: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.
Each pada of 3°20′ is also a navamsa, and the navamsa sign colours that quarter.
Pada 1 (13°20′ to 16°40′ Mesha), Simha navamsa. The Sun's sign adds pride, warmth and a wish to lead. This quarter is read as creative and expressive, with a need to be recognised for what it carries.
Pada 2 (16°40′ to 20°), Kanya navamsa. Mercury's earth sign adds care for detail and a wish to be useful. The intensity turns towards service and careful, practical work. Saturn's deepest debilitation, at 20° Mesha, falls on the line between this pada and the next.
Pada 3 (20° to 23°20′), Tula navamsa. Venus's own sign, so the nakshatra lord is at home in the navamsa. This quarter is read as the most artistic and the most concerned with partnership, beauty and fairness.
Pada 4 (23°20′ to 26°40′), Vrishchika navamsa. Mars's water sign adds depth and privacy. The Moon is debilitated in Vrishchika, so a Moon in this pada sits in its debilitation navamsa, read as feelings that run deep and are not easily shown; astrologers weigh it with the rest of the chart.
By custom, a child born with the Moon in Bharani is given a name beginning with the pada's syllable: Li, Lu, Le or Lo. It is a tradition, not a rule.
Moon in Bharani: the janma nakshatra
When the Moon is in Bharani at birth, Bharani is the janma nakshatra. The mind feels strongly and holds on to what it feels. A Bharani Moon wants experience at full strength, in love, work, food and art, and it also takes duty seriously; it can enjoy itself thoroughly and still be the one who stays late to finish the job.
Three influences meet. Mesha, ruled by Mars, gives courage and directness. Venus, the nakshatra lord, gives taste, sensuality and a pull towards beauty and pleasure. Yama gives a sense of accountability: Bharani Moons often keep careful track of what is owed, by themselves and by others. They are rarely squeamish and can be very steady company in a crisis, a hospital corridor or a hard conversation.
The challenge is regulation. Strong feelings can become fixed positions, and a sense of fairness can harden into judgement. Learning when to stop, whether eating, working, arguing or giving, is the practical form of restraint. The Moon counts Mars as neutral, so a Bharani Moon is not strengthened or weakened by its sign; its phase and company matter more, as the moon sign lesson explains.
When the lagna rather than the Moon falls in Bharani, the same qualities show in presence: a steady gaze, a strong physical presence and a manner that people take seriously.
Dasha at birth
Because Venus rules Bharani, a Moon here starts life in the Venus mahadasha, the longest of the nine at 20 years. You are born part-way through the nakshatra, so the balance at birth is the fraction of Bharani still ahead of the Moon, multiplied by 20.
A Moon at 14° Mesha is only 40′ into Bharani, with 760′ of 800′ still to cover, so 0.95 × 20 = 19 years of Venus remain. A Moon at 26° Mesha has only 40′ left, 0.05 of the nakshatra, so about one year of Venus remains. The Sun's six-year mahadasha follows. A long Venus period early in life is read as a childhood and youth in which comfort, the arts, relationships and the senses come forward, shaped by where Venus sits in the chart. The Venus page describes the period, and the dasha lesson gives the method.
Work and money
Bharani does well with work that carries weight, real consequences or real pleasure. Common leanings, not prescriptions:
- The arts and pleasure: design, fashion, film, music, food and hospitality, where Venus's taste meets Mars's drive.
- Thresholds of life: midwifery, obstetric and maternity care, hospice and palliative work, counselling through loss.
- Accountability: law, judging, auditing, insurance, trusts and estates, where Yama's sense of what is owed becomes a profession.
- Pressure work: roles with deadlines and stakes, where Bharani's ability to create under pressure is an asset.
With money, Bharani can be generous and can also spend heavily on comfort. Setting limits in advance, rather than in the moment, suits it best.
Relationships
In relationships Bharani is loyal, passionate and committed. It wants depth, not a casual arrangement, and once committed it carries its share and more. The difficulties come from the same strength: possessiveness, a long memory for hurts, and an all-or-nothing response to disagreement. Saying plainly what is needed, and letting small things pass, keeps the intensity warm rather than heavy.
Compatibility
Bharani with each of the 27 birth stars, as Ashtakoot matching reads them. Gana scores can differ by who is the man and who the woman; where they do, both are shown (man / woman for Bharani). Four kootas out of eight, never a verdict.

The table scores Bharani against each birth star on the four kootas that come from the nakshatras.
- Tara (3 points) counts from one star to the other and back. In the site's method a pair scores 3 or 1.5, never zero. Bharani scores the full 3 with the stars of its own lord, Venus, and of Ketu and the Sun either side: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha.
- Yoni (4 points). Elephant with elephant (Bharani, Revati) scores 4. Elephant with sheep, serpent, buffalo or monkey scores 3. Elephant and lion (Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada) are a traditional enemy pair and score 0.
- Gana (6 points). Manushya with Manushya scores 6, Manushya with Deva 5 or 6 depending on which chart is counted first, and Manushya with Rakshasa 0, which tradition reads as a difference of temperament rather than a fault.
- Nadi (8 points). Bharani is Madhya, so a partner whose star is also Madhya (Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta or Uttara Bhadrapada) gives Nadi dosha. Schools differ on its exceptions, and an astrologer checks them before weighing it.
These four are half of the eight kootas; the other four come from the two Moon signs. The total compares two Moon positions and is never a verdict on two people. The matching lesson explains all eight.
Bharani in muhurta
Muhurta groups the nakshatras by character. Bharani is a fierce (ugra) nakshatra, with Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada. Fierce here means forceful, not bad: these stars are chosen for decisive or demanding work, such as bringing something to a clean end, clearing or demolishing before rebuilding, tackling a hard or competitive task, or taking a firm decision that has been put off. Like every muhurta rule, the nakshatra is weighed with the tithi, the weekday and the chart of the moment. The muhurta lesson explains the everyday tables.
A worked example
Take a Moon at 24°00′ Mesha. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.
- Nakshatra. Bharani runs from 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Mesha, so 24°00′ is in Bharani. The distance into the nakshatra is 24°00′ − 13°20′ = 10°40′.
- Pada. Each pada is 3°20′: pada 1 to 3°20′, pada 2 to 6°40′, pada 3 to 10°00′, pada 4 to 13°20′. 10°40′ falls in pada 4, which in Mesha runs from 23°20′ to 26°40′.
- Navamsa. Bharani's padas map to Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika, so pada 4 gives Vrishchika navamsa.
- Syllable. The fourth syllable of Bharani is Lo.
- Dasha balance. 10°40′ is 640′ of 800′, so 0.8 of Bharani has been travelled. The balance is (1 − 0.8) × 20 = 0.2 × 20 = 4 years of Venus mahadasha at birth, followed by the Sun for 6 years and the Moon for 10.
The reading: Bharani's intensity and sense of responsibility in Mesha's direct style, with Venus giving taste and a love of beauty, and a Vrishchika navamsa that deepens the feelings and keeps them private. The growth edge is Bharani's own: restraint.
