Simha (Leo) is the fifth rashi, a fixed fire sign ruled by Surya, the Sun. It covers 120° to 150° of the sidereal zodiac, which is read as 0° to 30° within the sign.
This page goes through Simha in depth: its nature, the Moon in Simha, Simha as lagna, its three nakshatras, the grahas that are strong or weak here, work, relationships, compatibility, health in tradition and the transits that matter for a Simha Moon. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, drawn from the same tables the calculators on this site use.
The nature of Simha
Each part of Simha's description adds something:
- Element: fire. Fire signs act, warm and lead. They prefer to move rather than wait.
- Quality: fixed (sthira). Fixed signs hold and sustain. Mesha starts a fire, Simha keeps it burning, Dhanu carries it outward. Simha's fire is a steady flame rather than a spark.
- Symbol: the lion. The lion does not hunt all day; it holds territory and is seen to hold it. Simha has the same quality of presence that does not need constant activity.
- Lord: the Sun. The Sun owns only this sign, so Simha is the purest expression of solar themes: the self, authority, the father, reputation and vitality.
- Gender: male. Odd signs are male in Jyotish, which is read as an outward, active orientation.
- Kalapurusha part: the stomach and upper abdomen. In the cosmic body that the twelve signs map, from the head (Mesha) to the feet (Meena), Simha holds the centre of the body, the seat of digestion. Classical texts vary slightly for the middle signs.
Together these describe a sign that is warm, steady and central. As the fifth sign of the natural zodiac, Simha also carries the themes of the fifth bhava: intelligence, creativity, children and the merit a person brings into life (purva punya). Simha people tend to want their life to express something of their own, and they put real effort into what carries their name.
The Moon in Simha
When the Moon is in Simha at birth, Simha is your rashi in the Indian sense. The Moon counts the Sun as a friend, so the Moon sits in a friend's sign here and works comfortably. The mind takes on the Sun's colour: it needs dignity, it is generous, and it wants to be seen and respected for what it does.
The strengths show up as behaviour:
- Generosity. A Simha Moon pays for the meal, lends the car and shows up for the occasion. Giving is part of how it feels like itself.
- Loyalty. Once someone is in a Simha Moon's circle, they are defended in public, often more fiercely than they defend themselves.
- Courage to be visible. A Simha Moon will take the stage, chair the meeting or give the speech that others avoid.
- Steadiness. Fixed fire does not panic easily. In a crisis this mind tends to hold its ground and give others something to rally around.
The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:
- Hurt pride. Being overlooked, corrected in public or taken for granted wounds a Simha Moon more than it shows, and the hurt can come out as coldness.
- Needing the credit. Shared work where the Simha Moon's part goes unmentioned can feel like a quiet injustice.
- Fixed opinions. Once a Simha Moon has decided what is right, changing course can feel like losing face.
- Over-giving for image. Generosity can slide into spending to look generous.
The growth edge, as the rashi table on this site puts it, is sharing the light: letting others shine without feeling dimmed.
Simha as lagna
When Simha is rising at birth, the Sun becomes the lagna lord, the chart's representative, and its sign, house and company are read before almost anything else.
A Simha lagna gives a commanding presence and natural leadership; others see someone to follow. In manner, Simha rising tends to be dignified, direct and warm, and it carries itself as if it belongs in the room. Tradition describes the appearance as upright, with a broad chest or shoulders, a strong voice and an expressive face. These are traditional descriptions, and the rest of the chart changes them a good deal.
Others often read a Simha lagna as confident before it has said anything, and they bring it problems to solve. The lagna's own lesson is that people who are quick to follow are also quick to watch: a Simha rising is judged on whether its warmth reaches beyond its own circle.
For a Simha lagna, Mars rules the 4th house (Vrishchika) and the 9th (Mesha), so many astrologers call Mars the yogakaraka, the planet that can bring the most support. Saturn rules the 7th house (Kumbha), and since Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies, partnerships are read as a place where the Simha style has to learn patience and give-and-take.
Nakshatras in Simha
Simha holds two full nakshatras and the first pada of a third:
The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Simha, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.
Each nakshatra colours the sign in its own way:
Magha (Simha 0° to 13°20′, lord Ketu). Its symbol is a throne and its deities are the Pitris, the ancestors. Magha gives Simha a sense of lineage: these natives honour family and tradition, lead with dignity and want their name to mean something. Ketu's lordship adds a detached, inward quality beneath the regal manner. The growth edge is humility.
Purva Phalguni (13°20′ to 26°40′, lord Venus). Its symbol is the front legs of a bed and its deity Bhaga, who governs enjoyment and good fortune. Here Simha becomes warmer, more social and more artistic. These natives love company, comfort and creative play, and they are often good hosts. The growth edge is follow-through.
Uttara Phalguni, pada 1 (26°40′ to 30°, lord the Sun). Its symbol is the back legs of a bed and its deity Aryaman, who presides over friendship and agreements. With the Sun ruling both the sign and the star, this short stretch is very solar: principled, loyal and willing to carry responsibility for others. The growth edge is flexibility.
Grahas in Simha
No graha is exalted or debilitated in Simha. It is the Sun's own sign, and the first 20 degrees are the Sun's moolatrikona, the zone where it acts with the most authority and the least strain. A Sun in Simha is read as strong in what it signifies: confidence, standing with authority figures and the capacity to lead.
The other grahas are read by their natural friendship with the Sun:
- The Moon, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter count the Sun as a friend, so in Simha they are in a friend's sign and act with ease. Jupiter here is read as generous guidance, Mars as courageous leadership, Mercury as confident speech.
- Venus and Saturn count the Sun as an enemy, so in Simha they are in an enemy's sign. Venus here can make affection a little proud or showy; Saturn here is read as duty that chafes against authority. Neither is a bad placement; both ask for more conscious effort.
- Rahu and Ketu have no settled dignities, and schools differ on how to read them in Simha.
Work and money
Simha does its best work where responsibility and visibility come together:
- Leading something: a team, a department, an institution or a business.
- Government and administration, which the Sun signifies.
- Performance and the creative arts, where the fifth-sign themes of creativity and self-expression meet an audience.
- Teaching, mentoring and work with children, also fifth-sign themes.
What drains Simha is being made invisible: roles where effort is never acknowledged or where someone else takes the credit. A Simha in such a role often does the work well but withdraws its warmth.
With money, Simha tends to earn through position and reputation, and it likes to spend on quality, hospitality and the people it cares for. The habit to watch is spending to maintain an image, and lending to people because refusing would feel undignified.
Relationships
In relationships Simha is loyal, protective and openly affectionate. It shows love through gestures: celebrating the partner, defending them and providing generously. What it needs in return is admiration and respect, expressed openly rather than assumed.
The friction usually comes from pride. A Simha who feels slighted may wait for an apology rather than ask what happened, and two proud people can let a small hurt grow. The strongest relationships for Simha are with partners who appreciate it openly and who also have a world of their own, so that Simha is not the only centre.
Compatibility
In kundli matching the Moon signs of the two people are compared. For each possible partner Moon sign, the table below shows the bhakoot result and the friendship of the two sign lords:
Simha with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.
| Partner's Moon sign | Distance | Bhakoot | Lord friendship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 9/5 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Vrishabha | 10/4 | 7 of 7 | 0 of 5 |
| Mithuna | 11/3 | 7 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Karka | 12/2 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Simha | 1/1 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Kanya | 2/12 | 0 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Tula | 3/11 | 7 of 7 | 0 of 5 |
| Vrishchika | 4/10 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Dhanu | 5/9 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Makara | 6/8 | 0 of 7 | 0 of 5 |
| Kumbha | 7/7 | 7 of 7 | 0 of 5 |
| Meena | 8/6 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
In plain words:
- Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. When the signs are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 apart, bhakoot scores zero; at any other distance it scores the full seven points. For Simha that means zero with Karka and Kanya (its neighbours), Mesha and Dhanu (the other fire signs), and Makara and Meena. Full points come with Simha itself, Mithuna, Tula, Vrishchika, Vrishabha and Kumbha.
- Lord friendship (graha maitri) compares the Sun with the other sign's lord. The Sun counts the Moon, Mars and Jupiter as friends, so Karka, Mesha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena have friendly lords. Venus and Saturn are mutual enemies of the Sun, so the lords of Vrishabha, Tula, Makara and Kumbha are unfriendly. The Sun is neutral towards Mercury, while Mercury counts the Sun as a friend, so Mithuna and Kanya sit in between.
- Where bhakoot scores zero but the lords are friends, as with Mesha, Karka, Dhanu and Meena, tradition reads the bhakoot dosha as cancelled.
Moon-sign matching is one of eight kootas in Ashtakoot, and Ashtakoot itself is only a screen. A full reading compares the lagnas, Venus, Mars and the 7th houses. No Moon sign pairing decides whether a relationship works.
Health in tradition
Simha's Kalapurusha part is the stomach and upper abdomen, and its lord, the Sun, is linked with the heart, the eyes, the bones and the head. The Sun's nature is hot. Traditional readings therefore advise a Simha Moon or lagna to keep regular meals, avoid overwork and excess heat, and keep a steady routine of sleep and sunlight.
This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a chart replaces a doctor.
Transits for a Simha Moon
Transits are read by counting houses from the Moon sign.
- Saturn's Sade Sati runs while Saturn passes through Karka (the 12th from Simha), Simha itself and Kanya (the 2nd), about two and a half years in each. Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies, so tradition reads this as a period that asks a Simha Moon to work patiently, accept slower recognition and build on solid ground. Many people describe these years as the ones in which they grew up. The dhaiya, Saturn's passage through the 4th and 8th signs, falls when Saturn is in Vrishchika and Meena.
- Saturn's favourable houses for a Simha Moon are the 3rd (Tula, where Saturn is exalted), the 6th (Makara, its own sign) and the 11th (Mithuna).
- Jupiter's yearly transit is read as most helpful in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the Moon, which for Simha are Kanya, Dhanu, Kumbha, Mesha and Mithuna.
The dasha running at the time matters more than any single transit. See the transits lesson for how the two are read together.
An illustrative example
Take an example Moon at 18°45′ Simha. This is a worked example, not a real person.
- Absolute longitude. Simha starts at 120°, so the Moon is at 120° + 18°45′ = 138°45′.
- Nakshatra. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′. Magha covers Simha 0° to 13°20′, and Purva Phalguni covers 13°20′ to 26°40′. 18°45′ falls in Purva Phalguni.
- Pada. The Moon is 18°45′ − 13°20′ = 5°25′ into Purva Phalguni. Each pada spans 3°20′, so pada 1 covers 0° to 3°20′ and pada 2 covers 3°20′ to 6°40′. 5°25′ is in pada 2, whose traditional name syllable is "Ta".
- Dasha at birth. Purva Phalguni is ruled by Venus. The Moon has covered 5°25′ of 13°20′, which is 0.40625 of the nakshatra, so 0.59375 of Venus's 20 years remains: about 11 years and 10 months of Venus mahadasha at birth.
The reading: a Simha Moon in a friend's sign, coloured by Purva Phalguni. The mind has Simha's dignity and need for respect, softened by Venus into warmth, sociability and a love of beautiful things. Because Venus and the Sun are natural enemies, there can be a pull between pride and pleasure, between wanting to be respected and wanting to be liked. A long Venus period early in life would emphasise the arts, friendships and comfort. The growth edge combines both: finishing what is started, and sharing the stage.
