Meena (Pisces) is the twelfth and last rashi, a dual water sign ruled by Guru (Jupiter), and it spans 330° to 360° of the sidereal zodiac. Its symbol is a pair of fishes, and its subject is compassion and release: feeling what others feel, and letting go of what no longer needs holding.

This page reads Meena as a Moon sign, as a lagna, through its nakshatras, in matching and under the slow transits. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences.

The nature of Meena

  • Element: water. Water signs live through feeling and attachment. Meena shares water with Karka and Vrishchika, but where Karka's water protects and Vrishchika's water runs deep and private, Meena's water spreads outward and takes the shape of whatever holds it.
  • Quality: dual (dwiswabhava). Dual signs close each season and bridge one mode to the next. Meena adapts easily, sees several sides at once and can find it hard to choose one.
  • Lord: Jupiter. Guru is the graha of wisdom, faith, teachers and generosity. In Meena, Jupiter's faith turns inward toward devotion, imagination and kindness.
  • Symbol: the fishes. The traditional image is two fish, often drawn swimming in opposite directions, each head at the other's tail. It is read as a mind moving between two worlds, the practical and the inner.
  • Gender: female. Even-numbered signs are counted as female (receptive, steady) in Jyotish, and Meena, the twelfth, is one of them.
  • Kalapurusha: the feet. The cosmic person of Jyotish lies across the zodiac from head (Mesha) to feet (Meena). Meena is the end of the body as it is the end of the zodiac.

Read together, Meena is the sign of the open heart: water that adapts, under the most generous of the grahas. Its twelfth place adds to this, because the twelfth house of any chart is the house of retreat, expense, sleep, foreign lands and liberation (moksha), and Meena carries that flavour wherever it falls.

Meena as Moon sign: the Meena mind

When the Moon is in Meena at birth, Meena is the person's rashi, and Jyotish reads it as the style of the mind. The Meena Moon is sensitive, imaginative and absorbent. It takes in the moods around it, often before it knows it has.

How this shows up in behaviour:

  • Empathy. A Meena Moon picks up what others feel without being told. It is often the person friends call when something is wrong.
  • Imagination. It thinks in images, stories and music. Its ideas arrive whole and are explained afterwards.
  • Kindness without conditions. It helps people who cannot repay it, and it forgives quickly.
  • Adaptability. It fits into many settings and gets along with very different people.
  • A pull toward the inner life. Prayer, meditation, art, solitude and sleep restore this Moon in a way that busy social life does not.

The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:

  • Weak boundaries. The growth edge for this Moon in the tradition is boundaries. Absorbing others' moods can leave a Meena Moon carrying feelings that are not its own.
  • Avoidance. When reality is harsh, the Meena Moon may drift into daydreams, distraction or delay.
  • Indecision. Seeing every side can make it hard to pick one.
  • Being taken advantage of. Generosity without limits attracts people who take more than they give.

None of this is fixed. In the natural friendship table the Moon counts Jupiter as neutral, so Meena is a neutral sign for it, and the Moon's phase, nakshatra and company change the reading. The Moon sign lesson explains these modifiers.

Meena as lagna: the rising sign

When Meena is rising at birth, the sign describes the outer person. A Meena lagna gives a gentle, dreamy presence and an adaptable manner; others feel understood.

People tend to experience a Meena lagna as soft-spoken, kind and easy to confide in, sometimes hard to pin down. They often adjust their manner to the person in front of them without noticing they are doing it.

Classical texts describe a Meena lagna as of medium build, with soft features and expressive eyes. These descriptions are tradition and vary widely with the planets in and aspecting the lagna.

For a Meena lagna, Jupiter is the lagna lord and also rules the tenth house (Dhanu), so its placement speaks for both the self and the career. In the Parashari reading the Moon as fifth lord (Karka) and Mars as lord of the second and ninth houses (Mesha and Vrishchika) are counted as helpful planets for this lagna. Mercury rules both the fourth and the seventh houses. The lagna lesson explains how the lagna lord is read.

Nakshatras in Meena

Three nakshatras share Meena's 30 degrees:

The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Meena, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.

NakshatraLordPadasDegrees in the sign
Purva BhadrapadaJupiter40°00′ – 3°20′
Uttara BhadrapadaSaturn1, 2, 3, 43°20′ – 16°40′
RevatiMercury1, 2, 3, 416°40′ – 30°00′

Purva Bhadrapada, pada 4 (0° to 3°20′, lord Jupiter). Only the last quarter of this star falls in Meena; its first three padas are in Kumbha. With Jupiter ruling both the sign and the star, the passion of Purva Bhadrapada turns toward faith and service. The growth edge is moderation.

Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn). The depth beneath the surface, with Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep, as its deity. Saturn steadies Meena's fluid water: natives here are calm, patient and wise, slow to anger and hard to wear down. The growth edge is acting rather than only contemplating.

Revati (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury). The last of the twenty-seven, ruled by Pushan, the guardian of travellers. Revati natives are kind, protective and good guides, with Mercury adding a gift for words and for the arts. It is also where Venus reaches its deepest exaltation. The growth edge is firmness when kindness is taken for granted.

The nakshatra lesson covers all twenty-seven, and the Nakshatra calculator finds yours.

Grahas in Meena

Meena is Jupiter's own sign. Jupiter here is read as wisdom turned to compassion: a counsellor, a devotee, a generous teacher. Its moolatrikona is in Dhanu, not here. The Sun and Mars count Jupiter as a friend, so Meena is a friend's sign for them; the Moon and Saturn count Jupiter as neutral.

Venus is exalted in Meena, with its deepest exaltation at 27°. The tradition explains this by Jupiter's generosity lifting Shukra's love of beauty into devotion and selfless affection. An exalted Venus is read as refined taste, artistic gift and a capacity for love that asks little in return.

Mercury is debilitated in Meena, deepest at 15°. Budh is the graha of analysis, detail and exact speech, and Meena's water dissolves exact lines. A debilitated Mercury is not read as a lack of intelligence; it is read as intelligence that works through intuition and imagination rather than step-by-step logic, which suits poetry better than accounts. Astrologers check for neecha bhanga, the classical conditions that cancel debilitation, for example when Jupiter, the sign's lord, stands in an angle from the lagna or the Moon. Some astrologers also read Mercury joined by an exalted Venus in Meena as a cancellation; schools differ. The dignities lesson covers these rules.

Work and money

Meena does its best work where care, imagination or devotion is the job. The sign is commonly associated with:

  • Healing and care: nursing, counselling, therapy and social care.
  • The arts: music, film, poetry, painting and dance.
  • Spiritual and charitable work, the classic Jupiter-in-water fields.
  • Work by or across water, and in foreign places, which tradition links with the twelfth sign.
  • Hospitality and quiet institutions, such as hospitals, retreats and ashrams, which the twelfth house rules.

What tires a Meena is harsh competition, constant measurement and work without meaning. With money, it is generous and often unworried, giving freely and trusting that enough will come. The habit to watch is lending to everyone who asks and keeping no record of it.

Relationships

In relationships a Meena is devoted, romantic and deeply understanding. It shows love through attention, forgiveness and quiet sacrifice. What it needs in return is gentleness and a partner who notices when it has given too much.

Friction usually comes from boundaries: a Meena may agree to things to keep the peace and then feel unseen, or a practical partner may find its moods hard to follow. The strongest Meena relationships are with people who protect its softness rather than use it.

Compatibility and kundli matching

Here is how Meena relates to each of the twelve rashis as a partner's Moon sign:

Meena with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.

Partner's Moon signDistanceBhakootLord friendship
Mesha2/120 of 75 of 5
Vrishabha3/117 of 70.5 of 5
Mithuna4/107 of 70.5 of 5
Karka5/90 of 74 of 5
Simha6/80 of 75 of 5
Kanya7/77 of 70.5 of 5
Tula8/60 of 70.5 of 5
Vrishchika9/50 of 75 of 5
Dhanu10/47 of 75 of 5
Makara11/37 of 73 of 5
Kumbha12/20 of 73 of 5
Meena1/17 of 75 of 5

Bhakoot looks only at the distance between the two Moon signs. A 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship scores 0 of 7 points; every other distance scores 7. For Meena that means full points with Meena itself, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu and Makara, and zero with Mesha and Kumbha (2/12), Karka and Vrishchika (5/9), and Simha and Tula (6/8).

The 5/9 rule surprises people, because Karka and Vrishchika are fellow water signs. Graha maitri then looks at the lords. Mesha and Vrishchika are ruled by Mars and Simha by the Sun, and Jupiter, Mars and the Sun all count each other as friends, so tradition commonly reads the bhakoot dosha in those pairings as cancelled. With Tula the lords sit less easily, since Jupiter counts Venus as an enemy while Venus is neutral to Jupiter. Kanya, opposite Meena, has full bhakoot points, but its lord Mercury is counted an enemy by Jupiter.

Varna and vashya also come from the Moon sign. This site places Meena in the Brahmin varna and the jalachara (water) vashya group.

Moon-sign matching covers four of the eight kootas in Ashtakoot matching; the other four come from the nakshatras, and a full reading compares much more. No sign pairing is a verdict on two people.

Health in tradition

Jyotish gives Meena the feet in the Kalapurusha scheme, and Jupiter, its lord, is linked with the liver, body fat and growth. Traditional readings therefore advise a Meena to look after the feet, keep regular sleep, and watch the over-indulgence that comes easily to a generous nature.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a sign replaces a doctor.

Transits for a Meena Moon

Transits are read from the Moon sign, so a Meena Moon has its own calendar of slow transits:

  • Saturn. Sade Sati runs while Saturn crosses Kumbha, Meena and Mesha, the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon. Saturn is in its own sign and moolatrikona in Kumbha for the first phase, and debilitated in Mesha for the third; astrologers weigh both, with the running dasha, rather than reading the period from the signs alone. Saturn's transits of Mithuna (the 4th) and Tula (the 8th, its exaltation) are the shorter dhaiya periods.
  • Jupiter. Jupiter's yearly transit of Mesha, Karka, Kanya, Vrishchika and Makara (the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from a Meena Moon) is read as favourable. Its transit of Karka, the 5th, is also its exaltation, which tradition reads as an especially good year for children, study and creative work. When Jupiter crosses Meena itself it is in its own sign.
  • Rahu and Ketu. The nodes' transits of Vrishabha, Simha and Makara (the 3rd, 6th and 11th) are the ones read as easier.

The dasha sets the chapter and transits colour its seasons, so no transit is read alone. The transits lesson explains the method.

The Sun's own passage through Meena, from about mid-March to mid-April, is, like its passage through Dhanu, counted as kharmas in parts of north India, when many families avoid fixing weddings. This is custom, described here as culture.

A worked example

Take an illustrative chart, not a real person, with the Moon at 22°00′ Meena.

  1. Longitude. Meena begins at 330°, so the Moon's sidereal longitude is 330° + 22° = 352°.
  2. Nakshatra. Within Meena, Uttara Bhadrapada ends at 16°40′ and Revati runs from 16°40′ to 30°, so 22° falls in Revati. As a check, 352° ÷ 13°20′ = 26.4, and the 27th nakshatra (index 26) is Revati, which begins at 346°40′.
  3. Pada. The Moon is 22°00′ − 16°40′ = 5°20′ into Revati. Each pada spans 3°20′, and 5°20′ lies between 3°20′ and 6°40′, so this is pada 2. The traditional name syllable for this pada is "Do".
  4. Dasha at birth. The Moon has covered 5°20′ of 13°20′, which is 0.4 of the nakshatra. Revati's lord is Mercury, whose mahadasha lasts 17 years, so 0.4 × 17 = 6.8 years are counted as used and 10.2 years (about 10 years and 2½ months) of Mercury mahadasha remain at birth.

The reading: a Meena mind, sensitive and imaginative, with Revati's protective kindness and Mercury's way with words, which gives the sign's dreaminess a practical outlet. In matching, Revati is a deva gana star of antya nadi with the elephant as its yoni animal. Life opens with the Mercury mahadasha, which tradition associates with learning, speech and trade, then moves to Ketu's seven years. The growth edge is the one Meena and Revati share: holding a boundary kindly but firmly.
