Vrishchika (Scorpio) is the eighth rashi, a fixed water sign ruled by Mangal, Mars. It covers 210° to 240° of the sidereal zodiac, which is read as 0° to 30° within the sign.
This page goes through Vrishchika in depth: its nature, the Moon in Vrishchika, Vrishchika as lagna, its three nakshatras, the grahas that are strong or weak here, work, relationships, compatibility, health in tradition and the transits that matter for a Vrishchika Moon. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, drawn from the same tables the calculators on this site use.
The nature of Vrishchika
Each part of Vrishchika's description adds something:
- Element: water. Water signs feel, remember and respond. They take in more than they show.
- Quality: fixed (sthira). Fixed signs hold and sustain. In a water sign, that means feelings that last: loyalty, memory and commitment that do not fade quickly.
- Symbol: the scorpion. The scorpion keeps low, stays out of sight and acts decisively when it must. Vrishchika has the same privacy and the same capacity for focused, protective action.
- Lord: Mars. Mars signifies courage, energy, siblings, land and property, conflict and surgery. In a water sign, Mars's drive turns inward into determination, research and endurance rather than open confrontation.
- Gender: female. Even signs are female in Jyotish, which is read as a receptive, inward orientation.
- Kalapurusha part: the reproductive organs. In the cosmic body that the twelve signs map, Vrishchika holds the hidden, generative parts of the body. Classical texts vary slightly for the middle signs.
Together these describe a sign of depth and resolve. As the eighth sign of the natural zodiac, Vrishchika also carries the themes of the eighth bhava: transformation, hidden matters, research, inheritance and shared resources, and the capacity to come through change. Tradition often describes Vrishchika as the sign of renewal: it can end a chapter completely and begin again.
The Moon in Vrishchika
When the Moon is in Vrishchika at birth, Vrishchika is your rashi in the Indian sense. The Moon is debilitated here, deepest at 3°. The Moon seeks comfort, nourishment and ease of feeling; Vrishchika keeps feeling deep and private. Tradition reads the debilitation as a mind whose feelings are intense and guarded, not as a weak or unhappy person, and it checks several cancellations (neecha bhanga) before giving the placement any weight. The rest of the chart matters a great deal here.
The strengths show up as behaviour:
- Loyalty. Once a Vrishchika Moon commits to a person or a cause, it stays, often long after others have moved on.
- Seeing beneath the surface. This mind notices motives, silences and what is not being said. It is hard to mislead.
- Resilience. A Vrishchika Moon can come through loss or upheaval and rebuild completely, sometimes in a new direction.
- Focus. Given something it cares about, this mind can work on it with an intensity that others find hard to match.
The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:
- Secrecy. Keeping feelings private can become keeping everything private, so that even close people do not know what is wrong.
- Holding on to hurt. Fixed water remembers. An old injury may be carried far longer than it deserves.
- Testing people. Because trust is given slowly, a Vrishchika Moon may watch and test before letting anyone in.
- All or nothing. Its intensity can make it hard to care about something only a little.
The growth edge, as the rashi table on this site puts it, is trust.
Vrishchika as lagna
When Vrishchika is rising at birth, Mars becomes the lagna lord. Mars also rules the 6th house (Mesha) for this lagna, so its condition is read for the person's energy and for how they deal with competition, effort and daily discipline.
A Vrishchika lagna gives a magnetic, reserved presence and a steady gaze; others sense depth. In manner, Vrishchika rising is controlled and observant, and it reveals itself slowly. Tradition describes the appearance as compact and strong, with intense, noticing eyes and a manner that is quiet but hard to ignore. These are traditional descriptions, and the rest of the chart changes them a good deal.
Others often find a Vrishchika lagna hard to read at first and very dependable once they know it. The lagna's own lesson is that privacy can be mistaken for coldness: a Vrishchika rising is understood better when it lets people see a little of what it feels.
For a Vrishchika lagna, the Moon rules the 9th house (Karka) and the Sun the 10th (Simha), and both are friends of Mars, so many astrologers read them as the most supportive planets for this rising sign. Jupiter rules the 2nd (Dhanu) and 5th (Meena), and Venus rules the 7th (Vrishabha), so partnership is read through Venus. Schools differ on whether this lagna has a single yogakaraka.
Nakshatras in Vrishchika
Vrishchika holds the last pada of one nakshatra and the whole of two more:
The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Vrishchika, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.
Each nakshatra colours the sign in its own way:
Vishakha, pada 4 (Vrishchika 0° to 3°20′, lord Jupiter). Its symbol is a triumphal arch and its deities Indra and Agni. Vishakha is the star of purpose, and in Vrishchika that purpose becomes single-minded: these natives pursue one goal with great energy and patience. Jupiter's lordship adds principle and a wish to grow. The growth edge is enjoying the road, not just the arrival.
Anuradha (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn). Its symbol is the lotus and its deity Mitra, the god of friendship and agreements. Anuradha is friendship and devotion: these natives build loyal circles, work well in groups and keep going far from home. Saturn's lordship gives Vrishchika's intensity patience and discipline. The growth edge is asking for help.
Jyeshtha (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury). Its symbol is an earring or umbrella and its deity Indra, king of the gods. Jyeshtha means the eldest: these natives take charge, protect their own and carry responsibility early. Mercury's lordship adds sharp intelligence and a strategic mind. The growth edge is letting others lead.
Grahas in Vrishchika
Mars is at home in Vrishchika. Its moolatrikona is in Mesha, its other sign, so in Vrishchika Mars works through its own sign rather than its moolatrikona. A Mars in Vrishchika is read as strong in what it signifies, but in a quieter form than in Mesha: stamina, strategy, research and the courage to face what others avoid. When Mars sits in Vrishchika in a kendra from the lagna, the texts name it Ruchaka yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas.
The Moon is debilitated in Vrishchika, deepest at 3°, as described above. None of the other seven grahas is exalted here.
Rahu and Ketu are where schools differ most for this sign. Many schools debilitate Rahu in Vrishchika and exalt Ketu here, the reverse of their placements in Vrishabha; others use Dhanu and Mithuna instead; and some give Ketu a co-lordship of Vrishchika with Mars. This site shows the disagreement rather than choosing one view.
The other grahas are read by their natural friendship with Mars:
- The Sun and Jupiter count Mars as a friend, so in Vrishchika they are in a friend's sign. The Sun here gives determined leadership; Jupiter gives depth to study and teaching.
- Mercury and Venus are neutral towards Mars, so Vrishchika is a neutral sign for them. Mercury here makes a good investigator; Venus makes affection intense and private.
- Saturn counts Mars as an enemy, so Vrishchika is an enemy's sign for it. Saturn here is read as discipline under pressure, and it asks for patience rather than force. That is a call for effort, not fear.
Work and money
Vrishchika does its best work where depth, privacy and endurance matter:
- Research and investigation: science, analysis, detective and audit work, and any field that needs persistence.
- Medicine and surgery, which Mars signifies, and healing work that deals with crisis.
- Finance involving shared resources: insurance, taxation, inheritance and investment, which are eighth-sign themes.
- Crisis work: emergency services, security and roles that call for calm under pressure.
What drains Vrishchika is shallow work and constant exposure: roles where everything is public and nothing goes deep. A Vrishchika in such a place often withdraws and saves its energy for what matters to it.
With money, Vrishchika tends to be private and strategic, and it is often good at managing joint or inherited resources. The habit to watch is secrecy about money with the people who share it, and holding on to a position long after it has stopped serving.
Relationships
In relationships Vrishchika is deeply loyal, protective and wholehearted. It shows love through commitment: being there in a crisis, keeping confidences and standing by the partner when others do not. What it needs in return is honesty and a partner it can trust completely.
The friction usually comes from trust and jealousy. A Vrishchika partner who has been hurt before may test, watch or withdraw rather than say what it fears. The strongest relationships for Vrishchika are with partners who are consistent, who do not play games with its trust, and who give it room to open up at its own pace.
Compatibility
In kundli matching the Moon signs of the two people are compared. For each possible partner Moon sign, the table below shows the bhakoot result and the friendship of the two sign lords:
Vrishchika with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.
| Partner's Moon sign | Distance | Bhakoot | Lord friendship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 6/8 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Vrishabha | 7/7 | 7 of 7 | 3 of 5 |
| Mithuna | 8/6 | 0 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Karka | 9/5 | 0 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Simha | 10/4 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Kanya | 11/3 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Tula | 12/2 | 0 of 7 | 3 of 5 |
| Vrishchika | 1/1 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Dhanu | 2/12 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Makara | 3/11 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Kumbha | 4/10 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Meena | 5/9 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
In plain words:
- Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. When the signs are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 apart, bhakoot scores zero; at any other distance it scores the full seven points. For Vrishchika that means zero with Tula and Dhanu (its neighbours), Karka and Meena (the other water signs), and Mesha and Mithuna. Full points come with Vrishchika itself, Vrishabha, Simha, Kanya, Makara and Kumbha.
- Lord friendship (graha maitri) compares Mars with the other sign's lord. Mesha shares Vrishchika's lord. Mars is a mutual friend of the Sun and of Jupiter, so Simha, Dhanu and Meena have friendly lords. Mars counts the Moon as a friend while the Moon is neutral to Mars. Mars and Venus are neutral to each other. Mars counts Mercury as an enemy, and Saturn counts Mars as an enemy, so the lords of Mithuna, Kanya, Makara and Kumbha are unfriendly from one side.
- Where bhakoot scores zero but the lords are the same or friends, tradition reads the bhakoot dosha as cancelled. For Vrishchika that covers Mesha, Dhanu and Meena. With Karka the friendship runs one way, and astrologers differ on whether that is enough; with Tula and Mithuna it does not apply.
Moon-sign matching is one of eight kootas in Ashtakoot, and Ashtakoot itself is only a screen. A full reading compares the lagnas, Venus, Mars and the 7th houses. No Moon sign pairing decides whether a relationship works.
Health in tradition
Vrishchika's Kalapurusha part is the reproductive organs, and its lord, Mars, is linked with the blood, the muscles, the bone marrow, and injuries and heat. Traditional readings therefore advise a Vrishchika Moon or lagna to channel energy through regular physical activity, to take care around heat and sharp tools, and to let strong feelings out rather than carrying them in the body.
This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a chart replaces a doctor.
Transits for a Vrishchika Moon
Transits are read by counting houses from the Moon sign.
- Saturn's Sade Sati runs while Saturn passes through Tula (the 12th from Vrishchika), Vrishchika itself and Dhanu (the 2nd), about two and a half years in each. Saturn is exalted in Tula, so the first phase is read as comparatively constructive. Saturn and Mars are not friends, so the middle phase over the Moon is read as a time for patience, steady effort and letting go of what no longer works. Many people describe these years as the ones in which they grew up. The dhaiya falls when Saturn is in Kumbha (the 4th) and Mithuna (the 8th).
- Saturn's favourable houses for a Vrishchika Moon are the 3rd (Makara, its own sign), the 6th (Mesha) and the 11th (Kanya).
- Jupiter's yearly transit is read as most helpful in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the Moon, which for Vrishchika are Dhanu, Meena, Vrishabha, Karka and Kanya.
The dasha running at the time matters more than any single transit. See the transits lesson for how the two are read together.
An illustrative example
Take an example Moon at 22°30′ Vrishchika. This is a worked example, not a real person.
- Absolute longitude. Vrishchika starts at 210°, so the Moon is at 210° + 22°30′ = 232°30′.
- Nakshatra. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′. Anuradha ends at Vrishchika 16°40′, and Jyeshtha covers 16°40′ to 30°. 22°30′ falls in Jyeshtha.
- Pada. The Moon is 22°30′ − 16°40′ = 5°50′ into Jyeshtha. Each pada spans 3°20′: pada 1 is 0° to 3°20′, pada 2 is 3°20′ to 6°40′. 5°50′ is in pada 2, whose traditional name syllable is "Ya".
- Dasha at birth. Jyeshtha is ruled by Mercury. The Moon has covered 5°50′ of 13°20′, which is 0.4375 of the nakshatra, so 0.5625 of Mercury's 17 years remains: about 9 years and 7 months of Mercury mahadasha at birth.
The reading: a Vrishchika Moon, debilitated by sign but far from the 3° point of deepest debilitation, coloured by Jyeshtha. The mind has Vrishchika's depth and privacy, and Jyeshtha adds a sense of responsibility and a protective instinct towards family. An astrologer would look at where Mars, the sign lord, sits before saying anything about the Moon's strength. A Mercury period early in life puts emphasis on study and communication. The growth edge combines both: trusting others, and letting them lead at times.
