Purva Ashadha is the twentieth of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Dhanu (253°20′ to 266°40′ of the zodiac), ruled by Venus (Shukra), presided over by Apah, the Waters, and symbolised by a fan or a winnowing basket. Its name means "the earlier invincible one", and it is the star of early victory: of people who argue well, inspire others and refuse to give up.

This page covers its deity and symbol, its nature, its four padas, what a Moon here means, the Venus dasha it starts at birth, work, relationships, compatibility, its use in muhurta, and a worked example. The panel above gives its correspondences at a glance.

Deity and symbol

Apah are the Waters, invoked in Vedic hymns as purifying, nourishing mothers who give life and wash away what is stale. Water is the tradition's picture of a force that cannot be defeated: it gives way to every obstacle and still reaches the sea, and in time it wears down stone. That is the kind of invincibility Purva Ashadha carries, not brute strength but a persistence that keeps flowing.

The winnowing basket separates grain from husk with a toss of the wrist. It speaks of discernment: sifting arguments, keeping what is true and letting the chaff blow away. The fan moves air and spreads things far, the image of a voice that carries and of ideas that travel. Together they describe a nakshatra that persuades, clarifies and makes its case heard.

The two Ashadha stars, Purva ("earlier") and Uttara Ashadha ("later"), form a pair, and the month of Ashadha in the Hindu calendar takes its name from them, because its full Moon falls near them. Purva Ashadha wins first and with enthusiasm; Uttara Ashadha wins later and for good.

Nature: gana, yoni and nadi

  • Gana: manushya. The manushya gana is read as a human, middle temperament: practical, ambitious and engaged with the world, mixing ideals with self-interest in ordinary measure.
  • Yoni: monkey. The monkey is quick, clever, playful and social. Purva Ashadha shares it with Shravana.
  • Nadi: madhya. The middle of the three nadis, used in matching.

As behaviour, Purva Ashadha's strengths are conviction, eloquence, a gift for inspiring a group and great resilience after setbacks. Venus as lord adds charm, taste and a love of beauty; Jupiter as sign lord adds idealism and a sense of purpose. Classical lore notes that Venus is the guru of the asuras and Jupiter the guru of the devas, so this star sits where the two teachers meet.

The shadow side is the same confidence without a check: pride, a need to win every argument, overstatement, and difficulty accepting that the other side has a point. The growth edge, in the words of the site's reading, is listening as well as it speaks. Purva Ashadha's victories last longer when they are shared.

The four padas

The four padas of Purva Ashadha: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.

PadaDegreesNavamsaSyllable
1Dhanu 13°20′ – 16°40′SimhaBhu
2Dhanu 16°40′ – 20°00′KanyaDha
3Dhanu 20°00′ – 23°20′TulaPha
4Dhanu 23°20′ – 26°40′VrishchikaDha

Pada 1, Simha navamsa. The Sun's navamsa gives the most confident and visible form of the star: a natural speaker who enjoys an audience and leads from the front.

Pada 2, Kanya navamsa. Mercury's navamsa adds precision. Conviction here is backed by detail and research, and the persuasion is careful rather than grand.

Pada 3, Tula navamsa. Venus rules both the nakshatra and this navamsa, so its qualities are strongest here: charm, diplomacy, artistic taste and a talent for winning people over gently.

Pada 4, Vrishchika navamsa. Mars's watery navamsa adds depth and intensity. This pada holds its convictions privately and pursues them with great determination.

Each pada carries a traditional first syllable for a child's name: Bhu, Dha, Pha and Dha. The two Dha syllables are different letters in Devanagari, धा for pada 2 and the retroflex ढा for pada 4, which English spelling cannot show. Many families use these syllables; others adapt or ignore them. It is a custom, not a rule.

Moon in Purva Ashadha (janma nakshatra)

When the Moon is in Purva Ashadha at birth, it is the janma nakshatra, and its qualities describe the mind. A Purva Ashadha Moon is optimistic, expressive and sure of its views. It feels best with a cause, a debate or a creative project to throw itself into, and it recovers from disappointment with surprising speed, already looking for the next way through.

The Moon in Dhanu is in a neutral sign by the dignity table, since the Moon counts Jupiter as neutral, so its strength depends on its phase and company. Emotionally this Moon is warm and generous, fond of beauty, comfort and good company. It can be stubborn once it has made up its mind, and it dislikes being told it is wrong.

The task for this Moon is to let conviction coexist with doubt: to hold a view firmly and still ask whether it needs revising. When it learns that, its persuasive gift becomes a real strength for the people around it.

When the lagna rather than the Moon falls in Purva Ashadha, the same qualities show in manner: an open, confident presence and a voice that others listen to.

Dasha at birth

Purva Ashadha's lord is Venus, so a Moon here begins life in the Venus mahadasha, which lasts 20 years in full, the longest in the cycle. The balance at birth is the fraction of the nakshatra still to run, times 20. A Moon early in Purva Ashadha may spend most of childhood and youth in Venus's period; one near the end, only a little. The Sun's 6 years follow, then the Moon's 10.

A Venus period in childhood is often read as a time of comfort, art, friendship and attention to appearance and pleasure, coloured by Venus's placement in the chart. The Shukra page and the Vimshottari lesson explain the period in full.

Work and money

Purva Ashadha does well wherever persuasion and conviction matter. Typical fits, as tendencies rather than prescriptions:

  • Speaking and advocacy: law, debate, politics, public relations, teaching.
  • Inspiring others: coaching, campaigning, leadership in causes and movements.
  • Venus's fields: the arts, fashion, design, hospitality, luxury goods.
  • Water and travel: shipping, water work and travel, which tradition links to the Waters.

With money, Venus brings taste and the ability to earn through charm and presentation, and Jupiter's sign brings generosity. The useful habit is to let a confident plan be checked by someone cautious before committing.

Relationships

In relationships Purva Ashadha is warm, affectionate and loyal, and it enjoys romance, beauty and shared pleasures. It wants a partner it can admire and talk with as an equal.

The friction comes from pride. In a disagreement Purva Ashadha may argue to win rather than to understand, and it can find it hard to apologise. Listening fully, conceding small points and remembering that a relationship is not a debate make its partnerships much easier.

Compatibility

The table shows each of the 27 nakshatras as a partner's birth star. Four of the eight kootas come from the birth stars:

  • Tara counts from one star to the other, and back. A count that leaves 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by nine is unfavourable. Purva Ashadha scores the full 3 with Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha, and 1.5 with the rest; a count unfavourable one way is always favourable the other, so Tara never falls to zero.
  • Yoni compares the animals. Monkey with monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana) scores 4 of 4; monkey with horse, elephant, cat or mongoose scores 3; monkey with sheep (Krittika, Pushya) scores 0, the traditional enemy pair.
  • Gana compares temperaments. Manushya with manushya scores 6; manushya with deva scores 5 or 6, depending on which side is the groom's; manushya with rakshasa scores 0, read as a difference of temperament rather than a fault.
  • Nadi scores 0 when both stars share a nadi. Purva Ashadha's madhya nadi is shared by Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada and Purva Ashadha itself. Schools differ on when this Nadi dosha is cancelled.

These four sit inside the eight-koota Ashtakoot method, which also compares the Moon signs and their lords, and the whole score is a screen, never a verdict on two people. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.

In muhurta

In the classification used for choosing times, Purva Ashadha is a fierce (ugra) nakshatra, with Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada. Fierce stars are traditionally chosen for decisive or demanding work: contests, bold ventures, firm actions and tasks that need courage and force. Purva Ashadha's theme of not giving up fits that use. "Fierce" describes the kind of work, not a bad time. The nakshatra is one factor among the tithi, weekday and lagna of the moment, as the muhurta lesson explains.

A worked example

Take a Moon at 15°50′ Dhanu. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.

  1. Nakshatra. Dhanu begins at 240°, so the Moon is at 255°50′. Dividing by 13°20′ gives 19.19, so 19 whole nakshatras have passed and the Moon is in the twentieth, Purva Ashadha (253°20′ to 266°40′).
  2. Pada. Purva Ashadha begins at 13°20′ Dhanu, so the distance into it is 15°50′ − 13°20′ = 2°30′. Pada 1 runs from 0° to 3°20′ of the nakshatra, so 2°30′ is in pada 1, which in Dhanu runs from 13°20′ to 16°40′.
  3. Navamsa. Purva Ashadha's padas fall in Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika navamsa, so pada 1 gives Simha navamsa.
  4. Syllable. The first syllable, Bhu.
  5. Dasha balance. The Moon has covered 2°30′ of 13°20′, that is 150′ of 800′, or 0.1875 of the nakshatra. The balance is (1 − 0.1875) × 20 = 0.8125 × 20 = 16.25 years: 16 years and 3 months of Venus mahadasha remaining at birth, followed by the Sun's 6 years.

The reading: Purva Ashadha's conviction and eloquence, a Simha navamsa that puts them in front of an audience, and a long Venus period through childhood and youth. The neighbouring stars, Mula before and Uttara Ashadha after, show the move from clearing the ground to early victory to lasting success. The nakshatra lesson covers all 27.
