Purva Phalguni is the eleventh of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Simha, ruled by Shukra (Venus), with Bhaga as its deity and the front legs of a bed as its symbol. It sits in the heart of the lion's sign and is the star of enjoyment, art and good company.
This page covers its deity and symbol, its nature, padas, the Moon placed here, the dasha it starts, work, relationships, matching and muhurta, with a worked example. The panel above lists its correspondences.
Deity and symbol
Purva Phalguni is the first of a pair of stars, the Phalgunis, which together were pictured as a bed or couch: Purva, "the former", gives its front legs and Uttara, "the latter", its back legs. The lunar month of Phalguna takes its name from them, because its full Moon falls in this part of the sky; that full Moon is Holi, the festival of colour and play.
Its deity is Bhaga, one of the Adityas, the sons of Aditi. His name means "share" or "portion": he is the god who gives each person their share of good fortune and enjoyment, and in the Vedic hymns he is linked with marriage and happiness in the home. The word bhagya, fortune, comes from the same root.
The bed completes the picture. A bed is where effort ends and rest, pleasure and intimacy begin. The front legs are the first half of that image, the moment of relaxing into enjoyment; the back legs, in Uttara Phalguni, are the commitment that makes the bed a home. Purva Phalguni people tend to know how to enjoy life and how to make others enjoy it too.
Nature: gana, yoni and nadi
Purva Phalguni's gana is manushya, the human temperament in matching: practical, social and balanced between the ideals of deva and the independence of rakshasa. It is the gana of people who want a full life in the world.
Its yoni is the rat (mushaka), which it shares with its neighbour Magha. The rat is resourceful and fond of comfort and a well-stocked home. Its nadi is madhya, the middle of the three; nadi is used mainly in matching, where two people of the same nadi score zero on that koota.
As behaviour, Purva Phalguni's strengths are these:
- Warmth. It is affectionate, generous with time and attention, and makes people feel welcome.
- Creativity. Music, performance, design, style and play come naturally.
- Sociability. It likes company, is a good host and often brings people together.
- Ease. It knows how to relax and helps others relax, a real gift in tense situations.
The shadow side is ease without effort: putting off what is tiresome, drifting from project to project once the fun has gone, indulgence, or vanity about looks and status. In this site's words, the growth edge is follow-through: bringing what was begun with pleasure to a finish.
The four padas
Each pada is 3°20′ and corresponds to one navamsa sign. Purva Phalguni's padas fall in the navamsa signs Simha to Vrishchika:
The four padas of Purva Phalguni: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.
Pada 1, Simha navamsa (Simha 13°20′ to 16°40′). A planet here is in Simha in both the birth chart and the navamsa, which the tradition calls vargottama and reads as settled and strong in that sign's meaning. This is the most Simha-like pada: confident, warm and proud of its work.
Pada 2, Kanya navamsa (16°40′ to 20°). Mercury's earth sign adds care, craft and attention to detail. The creativity becomes skilled and practical.
Pada 3, Tula navamsa (20° to 23°20′). Venus's own air sign makes this the most Venusian pada: graceful, diplomatic, artistic and drawn to partnership.
Pada 4, Vrishchika navamsa (23°20′ to 26°40′). Mars's water sign adds intensity and depth of feeling. Vrishchika is the Moon's sign of debilitation, so a Moon here is read as feeling more deeply and privately than the cheerful surface of Purva Phalguni suggests.
The naming custom gives a child a name beginning with the syllable of the birth pada: Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu for padas 1 to 4. It is a custom, kept by many families and adapted or ignored by others, not a rule; spellings vary by region.
The Moon in Purva Phalguni
When the Moon is in Purva Phalguni at birth, it is the janma nakshatra, the birth star. The whole nakshatra lies in Simha, which the Moon counts as a friend's sign, so the Moon here is warm, expressive and at ease being seen.
A Purva Phalguni Moon gives a mind that seeks joy and connection. Such a person needs affection, beauty and company to feel well, and gives them freely. Moods lift quickly with good music, good food or a good conversation. There is often a talent for making an occasion feel special, and a sense that life is meant to be enjoyed rather than merely endured.
Venus, the nakshatra lord, sharpens the taste for art, romance and comfort. The friendship table adds a nuance: the Sun, lord of Simha, and Venus count each other as enemies, so the sign asks for dignity and duty while the star asks for pleasure and ease. Many Purva Phalguni natives move between the two, working hard for recognition and then wanting a long rest.
At its best a Purva Phalguni Moon is generous, creative and a source of warmth for everyone around it. Under strain it can become self-indulgent or avoid what is unpleasant. None of this is fixed: the Moon's phase, its company and the rest of the chart all change the reading, as the moon sign lesson explains.
When the lagna falls in Purva Phalguni, the same qualities show in manner: a relaxed, charming presence with an eye for appearance.
Dasha at birth
The Vimshottari dasha begins from the lord of the birth star. A Moon in Purva Phalguni starts life in the Venus mahadasha, the longest of all at 20 years. How much remains at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra: the fraction still to run, multiplied by 20, gives the balance.
Because Venus's period is long, a Moon early in Purva Phalguni can spend most of childhood and youth in it. After Venus come the Sun (6 years) and the Moon (10). A Venus period is read through Venus's placement in the chart, described on the Shukra page, and the Vimshottari lesson explains the whole cycle.
Work and money
Purva Phalguni does well where creativity, people and pleasure meet. Common leanings, not prescriptions:
- The arts: music, dance, theatre, film, writing and visual art.
- Beauty and style: fashion, design, cosmetics and interiors.
- Hospitality: hotels, restaurants, events, weddings and travel.
- People-facing work: public relations, entertainment, teaching the arts and roles that depend on charm.
With money, Purva Phalguni likes to live well and to share what it has. It earns well when its work gives pleasure to others, and it spends readily on comfort, gifts and occasions. The habit worth building is the same as its growth edge: finishing, and saving some of what comes in before it is enjoyed.
Relationships
Purva Phalguni is affectionate, romantic and generous in love. It enjoys courtship, celebrations and the small pleasures of shared life, and it brings warmth to a household. With Bhaga as deity, happiness in partnership is central to its nature.
The friction comes from avoiding the hard parts. Purva Phalguni may prefer a pleasant evening to a difficult conversation, or may lose interest when romance turns into routine. Staying through the dull stretches, and raising problems while they are small, make its relationships much stronger.
Compatibility
In Ashtakoot matching, four of the eight kootas come from the two birth stars: tara, yoni, gana and nadi. The table shows each of them for a Purva Phalguni Moon against every nakshatra as the partner's birth star:
Purva Phalguni with each of the 27 birth stars, as Ashtakoot matching reads them. Gana scores can differ by who is the man and who the woman; where they do, both are shown (man / woman for Purva Phalguni). Four kootas out of eight, never a verdict.

Tara counts from one birth star to the other and back. Counts that leave 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by nine are unfavourable; favourable both ways scores 3, one way 1.5. Counted forward from Purva Phalguni, Hasta, Swati and Anuradha are the 3rd, 5th and 7th stars. By this count no pair can be unfavourable both ways, so Tara is always 3 or 1.5.
Yoni compares the animals. Magha and Purva Phalguni, both rats, score the full 4. Punarvasu and Ashlesha, both cats, score 0, because cat and rat are the classical enemy pair.
Gana scores 6 for two manushya stars and 0 for manushya with rakshasa. With a deva star it scores 6 or 5, depending on which chart is counted as the boy's. So Magha, which shares the rat yoni, scores 0 on gana: the kootas often pull in different directions.
Nadi scores 0 when both stars share a nadi. Purva Phalguni is madhya, as are Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada, so a pairing with any of these, or with another Purva Phalguni, carries what tradition calls Nadi dosha. Schools differ on the exceptions that cancel it.
Nakshatra matching is four parts of an eight-koota method, and the eight kootas are one part of comparing two charts. No score is a verdict on two people. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.
Purva Phalguni in muhurta
Muhurta, the choice of a good time, classifies the nakshatras by character. Purva Phalguni is one of the five fierce (ugra) nakshatras, with Bharani, Magha, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada. Fierce does not mean unlucky, and it describes the day, not the people born on it. These days are chosen for bold and demanding work: a difficult undertaking, a contest, a firm stand, or clearing away the old so that something new can be built. For gentle beginnings, tradition looks to the soft and fixed stars, including Uttara Phalguni next door. The muhurta lesson explains how the day's nakshatra fits into a muhurta.
A worked example
Take a Moon at 21°40′ Simha. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.
- Nakshatra. Magha runs to 13°20′ Simha and Purva Phalguni from 13°20′ to 26°40′, so 21°40′ is in Purva Phalguni.
- Pada. The distance into Purva Phalguni is 21°40′ − 13°20′ = 8°20′. Pada 2 ends at 6°40′ and pada 3 at 10°00′, so 8°20′ falls in pada 3, which in Simha runs from 20° to 23°20′.
- Navamsa. Purva Phalguni's padas map to Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika, so pada 3 is Tula navamsa. As a check, Simha is a fixed sign and counts its navamsas from the 9th sign, Mesha: 21°40′ ÷ 3°20′ = 6.5, the seventh navamsa, and six signs on from Mesha is Tula.
- Syllable. Pada 3 gives Ti.
- Dasha at birth. Purva Phalguni's lord is Venus, 20 years. The Moon has covered 8°20′ of 13°20′, that is 500′ of 800′, or 0.625 of the nakshatra. The balance is (1 − 0.625) × 20 = 0.375 × 20 = 7.5 years, that is 7 years and 6 months of Venus dasha remaining at birth, followed by the Sun's 6 years.
The reading: a warm Simha Moon with Purva Phalguni's love of company and art, Venus as star lord, and a Tula navamsa, Venus's own sign, that doubles the grace and the wish for partnership. The growth edge stays Purva Phalguni's: follow-through.
The neighbouring stars are Magha before and Uttara Phalguni after, and the nakshatra lesson lists all 27.
