Swati is the fifteenth of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 6°40′ to 20°00′ of Tula, ruled by Rahu in the Vimshottari order, with Vayu, the wind, as its deity and a young shoot swaying in the wind as its symbol. It is the nakshatra of independence: free movement, trade and the ability to bend without breaking.

This page covers its deity and symbol, its nature in matching terms, the four padas, the Moon in Swati, the long Rahu dasha a Swati Moon is born into, work and relationships, compatibility, its use in muhurta, and a worked example. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences.

Vayu and the young shoot

Vayu is the god of wind and of breath. In the Vedic hymns he is swift and strong, and in later thought he is linked with prana, the breath that keeps a body alive. In the epics he is the father of Hanuman and of Bhima, both known for strength and speed. Wind cannot be held or seen, only felt by what it moves.

The symbol this site uses is a young shoot in the wind. A new plant in a strong wind bends almost to the ground and comes back up, because it is flexible and its roots hold. Other lists give coral or a sword as Swati's symbol; traditions differ. Swati's star is a single bright one, the star Western astronomers call Arcturus.

A well-known image in Indian poetry also belongs to Swati: a raindrop that falls while the Sun is in Swati, and lands in an open oyster, becomes a pearl. It is a poet's way of saying that the right moment and the right vessel turn something ordinary into something precious.

Together these say that Swati's character is movement with roots: restless, independent and adaptable, but steadier underneath than it appears.

Nature: gana, yoni and nadi

  • Gana: Deva. Deva gana is read as gentle, courteous and helpful. In Swati it shows as good manners, tact and a wish to be on good terms with everyone.
  • Yoni: Buffalo. The buffalo is patient and hard-working. It balances Swati's restlessness with real staying power once a task is chosen. Hasta shares this yoni.
  • Nadi: Antya. The last of the three nadis. In matching it matters only whether two people share a nadi.

The strengths show as behaviour. Swati natives value freedom and make their own way. They are diplomatic, pleasant to deal with and good at trade and negotiation, which suits Tula, the sign of the scales. They adapt quickly to new places and people and often enjoy travel.

The shadow side is the wind's: it does not like to settle. Swati natives can keep options open too long, avoid saying no to anyone, or move on just as something needs a long commitment. Their wish to please everyone can hide their own view. In the words of this site's nakshatra table, the growth edge is commitment.

The four padas

All four padas of Swati lie in Tula, and they map to the navamsa signs Dhanu to Meena, all ruled by Jupiter or Saturn:

The four padas of Swati: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.

PadaDegreesNavamsaSyllable
1Tula 6°40′ – 10°00′DhanuRu
2Tula 10°00′ – 13°20′MakaraRe
3Tula 13°20′ – 16°40′KumbhaRo
4Tula 16°40′ – 20°00′MeenaTa

Pada 1 (Tula 6°40′ to 10°00′), Dhanu navamsa. Jupiter's navamsa adds principle, learning and a love of distant places. The Sun's debilitation point, 10° Tula, lies on the boundary between this pada and the next.

Pada 2 (10°00′ to 13°20′), Makara navamsa. Saturn's navamsa adds discipline and a practical head for business. This is the most structured, career-minded Swati.

Pada 3 (13°20′ to 16°40′), Kumbha navamsa. Saturn's other sign brings networks, social causes and independent thinking. The pada values freedom of ideas as much as freedom of movement.

Pada 4 (16°40′ to 20°00′), Meena navamsa. Jupiter's watery sign adds imagination, compassion and a spiritual turn. Saturn's exaltation point, 20° Tula, is where this pada and Swati end.

The naming tradition gives Ru, Re, Ro and Ta as the first syllables for padas 1 to 4. It is a custom: families use it, adapt it or leave it aside. The nakshatras lesson gives the full table.

The Moon in Swati (janma nakshatra)

A Moon in Swati is in Tula, a sign whose lord Venus the Moon counts as neutral, so the Moon is neither strengthened nor weakened by its sign; it takes on Tula's wish for balance and Swati's need for space.

In temperament, a Swati Moon is sociable, courteous and independent. It is happiest with room to move: its own schedule, its own money, its own opinions. It reads people well and adjusts its manner to them, which makes it a natural go-between. Rahu as nakshatra lord adds curiosity about the new, the foreign and the unconventional.

Feelings move like weather. A Swati Moon can be unsettled by pressure or by being hemmed in, and it may need to step away before it can talk. It does not always show what it feels, preferring to keep the peace. The steadying habit is a regular routine that holds while everything else moves, and the practice of saying clearly what it wants.

When the lagna falls in Swati, the same qualities show in manner: a pleasant, well-mannered and independent person, easy to talk to and hard to pin down.

The dasha at birth

A Moon in Swati starts life in the Rahu mahadasha, eighteen years in full, the third longest in the cycle after Venus and Saturn. Rahu's dasha is read as a time of ambition, change and contact with the unfamiliar, and for a child it often coincides with moves, new environments and a strong pull towards the world outside the family.

The balance at birth is the fraction of Swati still to run, multiplied by eighteen years. A Moon early in Swati can mean most of childhood and adolescence in Rahu's dasha; a Moon near the end of Swati, only a year or two. Rahu is followed by Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19) and Mercury (17). The Rahu graha page describes its mahadasha, and the Vimshottari lesson shows the cycle.

Work and money

Swati likes work with independence, movement and people. Common inclinations, not instructions:

  • Trade and business: buying and selling, import and export, sales and running one's own enterprise.
  • Diplomacy and negotiation: law, mediation, human resources, public relations and any role that brings people to agreement.
  • Travel and movement: transport, logistics, tourism, aviation and work across places or countries.
  • New fields: technology and unconventional lines of work, which Rahu favours.

With money, Swati is enterprising and willing to take a fair risk, and it likes the freedom money buys. The working habit is to commit to one plan long enough for it to pay.

Relationships

In relationships Swati is charming, considerate and fair. It enjoys company and conversation, and it treats a partner as an equal. It needs a partner who gives it room and does not mistake its independence for distance.

The friction comes from commitment and directness. A Swati partner may delay big decisions or avoid a disagreement until it has grown. Learning to commit openly and to name a problem early makes Swati's relationships steadier and more honest.

Compatibility

For a partner born in each of the 27 nakshatras, this table shows the four nakshatra-based kootas against a Swati Moon:

Swati with each of the 27 birth stars, as Ashtakoot matching reads them. Gana scores can differ by who is the man and who the woman; where they do, both are shown (man / woman for Swati). Four kootas out of eight, never a verdict.

Tara counts from one birth star to the other and back; a count leaving 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 is unfavourable. It scores 3 points when both ways are favourable and 1.5 when one is, so no pair scores zero. For Swati the full 3 comes with Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada.

Yoni compares the animals. The buffalo scores 4 of 4 with Swati and Hasta, 3 with the elephant, sheep and cow stars (such as Bharani, Krittika and Uttara Bhadrapada), and 0 with the horse stars, Ashwini and Shatabhisha, the traditional enemy pair.

Gana compares temperament. A deva Swati scores well with deva and manushya stars, and 1 of 6 with rakshasa stars such as Chitra and Vishakha, a difference of style rather than of worth.

Nadi scores 0 of 8 when both stars share a nadi. Swati's Antya nadi is shared by Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati itself, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati. Tradition calls this Nadi dosha, and schools differ on the exceptions that cancel it.

These four are part of the eight-koota Ashtakoot method, which is itself only part of a full chart comparison. No nakshatra pairing is a verdict on two people. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.

Swati in muhurta

Swati belongs to the movable (chara) group, with Punarvasu, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. Movable nakshatras are traditionally chosen for things meant to move and change: starting a journey, buying or first using a vehicle, moving house, and beginning work that involves travel or trade. The wind's star is a natural fit.

A full muhurta also weighs the tithi, weekday and the chart of the moment. The muhurta lesson explains the method.

A worked example

Take a Moon at 15°00′ Tula. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.

  1. Nakshatra. Chitra ends at 6°40′ Tula and Swati runs from 6°40′ to 20°00′, so 15°00′ is in Swati. In whole-zodiac terms the Moon is at 195°00′, and 195°00′ ÷ 13°20′ = 14.625, which places it in the fifteenth nakshatra.
  2. Pada. The distance into Swati is 15°00′ − 6°40′ = 8°20′. Pada 2 ends at 6°40′ and pada 3 at 10°00′, so 8°20′ falls in pada 3, which runs from 13°20′ to 16°40′ Tula.
  3. Navamsa. Swati's padas map to Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, so pada 3 places this Moon in Kumbha navamsa.
  4. Syllable. The common syllable for Swati pada 3 is Ro.
  5. Birth dasha. Swati's lord is Rahu, eighteen years. The Moon has covered 8°20′ of 13°20′, that is 500′ of 800′, or 0.625 of the nakshatra. The balance is (1 − 0.625) × 18 = 6.75 years, that is 6 years and 9 months of Rahu mahadasha remaining at birth. Jupiter follows for sixteen years.

The reading: Swati's independence and tact in Venus's sign, with a Kumbha navamsa that adds a social conscience and a mind of its own. Rahu's dasha in the early years points towards change and new surroundings. The growth edge is still Swati's: commitment.

The previous nakshatra is Chitra and the next is Vishakha.
