Kanya (Virgo) is the sixth rashi, a dual earth sign ruled by Budh, Mercury. It covers 150° to 180° of the sidereal zodiac, which is read as 0° to 30° within the sign.
This page goes through Kanya in depth: its nature, the Moon in Kanya, Kanya as lagna, its three nakshatras, the grahas that are strong or weak here, work, relationships, compatibility, health in tradition and the transits that matter for a Kanya Moon. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, drawn from the same tables the calculators on this site use.
The nature of Kanya
Each part of Kanya's description adds something:
- Element: earth. Earth signs are practical. They care about what works, what lasts and what can be measured.
- Quality: dual (dwiswabhava). Dual signs adapt and bridge. They can see more than one way of doing a thing and are comfortable revising a plan.
- Symbol: the maiden. The maiden is often shown holding grain and a lamp, the harvest and the light to sort it by. Kanya has that quality of careful attention to what has been gathered.
- Lord: Mercury. Mercury signifies intellect, speech, trade, writing and education. In Kanya, Mercury's mind is turned to analysis and useful detail rather than conversation for its own sake.
- Gender: female. Even signs are female in Jyotish, which is read as a receptive, inward orientation.
- Kalapurusha part: the waist and intestines. In the cosmic body that the twelve signs map, Kanya holds the place where food is sorted and absorbed. Classical texts vary slightly for the middle signs.
Together these describe a sign of discernment: it takes in, sorts, keeps what is useful and lets the rest go. As the sixth sign of the natural zodiac, Kanya also carries the themes of the sixth bhava: service, daily work, health routines, and the ability to deal with problems and competition. Kanya people tend to show care by fixing things, and they feel most settled when something is in order.
The Moon in Kanya
When the Moon is in Kanya at birth, Kanya is your rashi in the Indian sense. The Moon counts Mercury as a friend, so it sits in a friend's sign here and works comfortably, though Mercury does not return the friendship. The mind is careful and practical: it notices what is wrong and wants to fix it.
The strengths show up as behaviour:
- Noticing. A Kanya Moon sees the typo, the missing receipt or the one clause in the agreement that does not match. Detail is where it feels at home.
- Usefulness. Asked to help, a Kanya Moon does not offer sympathy alone; it makes a list, finds the number or turns up with the right tool.
- Learning by doing. This mind improves through practice and correction, and it respects skill that has been earned.
- Modesty. A Kanya Moon rarely oversells itself. It would rather be accurate than impressive.
The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:
- Worry. A mind trained to spot problems can keep finding them after the work is done, and it may rehearse what might go wrong at night.
- Criticism. Feedback meant as help can land as fault-finding, especially with people who did not ask for it.
- Self-criticism. The harshest standard a Kanya Moon applies is usually to itself.
- Delay through perfecting. Work may be held back because it is not quite ready, long after it is good enough.
The growth edge, as the rashi table on this site puts it, is accepting imperfection: in work, in other people and in oneself.
Kanya as lagna
When Kanya is rising at birth, Mercury becomes the lagna lord and also rules the 10th house (Mithuna), so the condition of Mercury links the person's self and career closely.
A Kanya lagna gives a neat, modest manner and a reputation for competence. In manner, Kanya rising is courteous, observant and a little reserved at first, and it tends to listen before it speaks. Tradition describes the appearance as youthful for its age, slim or neat in build, with an alert, intelligent face and careful dress. These are traditional descriptions, and the rest of the chart changes them a good deal.
Others often see a Kanya lagna as the reliable one: the person who has read the instructions and can be trusted with the details. The lagna's own lesson is that being useful is not the same as being valued, and a Kanya rising does well to state its needs as clearly as it meets everyone else's.
For a Kanya lagna, Venus rules the 2nd house (Tula) and the 9th (Vrishabha), and many astrologers read it as the most supportive planet for this rising sign, even though Venus is debilitated in Kanya itself. Jupiter rules the 4th and 7th houses (Dhanu and Meena), so partnership and home are both read through Jupiter.
Nakshatras in Kanya
Kanya holds the end of one nakshatra, the whole of a second and the start of a third:
The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Kanya, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.
Each nakshatra colours the sign in its own way:
Uttara Phalguni, padas 2 to 4 (Kanya 0° to 10°, lord the Sun). Its symbol is the back legs of a bed and its deity Aryaman, who presides over friendship and agreements. Here Kanya's sense of service meets the Sun's sense of duty: these natives keep their word, support others and value fairness. They often take on responsibility in families and workplaces without being asked. The growth edge is flexibility.
Hasta (10° to 23°20′, lord the Moon). Its symbol is the hand and its deity Savitar, the Sun as the giver of life and skill. Hasta is skill in the hands: these natives are dexterous, witty and practical problem-solvers, often good at crafts, healing work or anything that needs fine control. The Moon's lordship makes Hasta more feeling and more changeable than the rest of Kanya. The growth edge is trusting what cannot be controlled.
Chitra, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′ to 30°, lord Mars). Its symbol is a bright jewel and its deity Tvashtar, the divine craftsman. In Kanya, Chitra gives an eye for design and precise making: these natives like to build things that are both correct and beautiful. Mars adds drive and a sharper edge. The growth edge is substance beneath the surface.
Grahas in Kanya
Kanya is one of the few signs where a graha is both exalted and at home. Mercury is exalted in Kanya, deepest at 15°; its moolatrikona runs from 16° to 20°; and the rest of the sign is its own sign. A Mercury in Kanya is read as strong in what it signifies: clear thinking, accurate speech, skill with numbers, writing and trade. When Mercury sits in Kanya in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lagna), the texts name it Bhadra yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas.
Venus is debilitated in Kanya, deepest at 27°. Venus seeks beauty, pleasure and harmony; Kanya asks what is useful and what is wrong. The placement is read as affection that shows itself through practical care, and as high standards in love and the arts that can make a person hard to please. Tradition recognises several cancellations (neecha bhanga), and an astrologer checks them before reading Venus here as weak.
The other grahas are read by their natural friendship with Mercury:
- The Moon and Saturn count Mercury as a friend, so in Kanya they are in a friend's sign. Saturn here is read as patient, methodical work.
- The Sun is neutral towards Mercury, so Kanya is a neutral sign for it.
- Mars and Jupiter count Mercury as an enemy, so in Kanya they are in an enemy's sign. Mars here can turn energy into criticism; Jupiter's broad vision can get lost in detail. Both ask for conscious effort, not fear.
- Rahu and Ketu have no settled dignities, and schools differ on how to read them in Kanya.
Work and money
Kanya does its best work where accuracy and usefulness matter:
- Analysis and accounts: finance, audit, data, research and quality control.
- Health and service work, which belong to the sixth-sign themes: medicine, nursing, nutrition and care.
- Writing, editing and teaching, which Mercury signifies.
- Skilled crafts and technical trades, especially in the Hasta and Chitra parts of the sign.
What drains Kanya is disorder imposed from outside: vague instructions, careless colleagues and work that is redone because nobody checked it. A Kanya in such a place often keeps things running quietly while growing tired of being the only one who does.
With money, Kanya tends to be careful, to budget and to keep records. The habit to watch is anxiety about money that is out of proportion to the facts, and saving so carefully that nothing is ever enjoyed.
Relationships
In relationships Kanya is attentive, dependable and quietly devoted. It shows love through acts of service: remembering what the partner needs, sorting out the problem, making daily life run smoothly. What it needs in return is appreciation for that work and a partner who notices the effort behind it.
The friction usually comes from criticism, given or felt. A Kanya partner who points out what could be better may be trying to help, and the other person may hear only that they fell short. The strongest relationships for Kanya are with partners who receive its care warmly and who can say, gently, when the help has become correction.
Compatibility
In kundli matching the Moon signs of the two people are compared. For each possible partner Moon sign, the table below shows the bhakoot result and the friendship of the two sign lords:
Kanya with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.
| Partner's Moon sign | Distance | Bhakoot | Lord friendship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 8/6 | 0 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Vrishabha | 9/5 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Mithuna | 10/4 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Karka | 11/3 | 7 of 7 | 1 of 5 |
| Simha | 12/2 | 0 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Kanya | 1/1 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Tula | 2/12 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Vrishchika | 3/11 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Dhanu | 4/10 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Makara | 5/9 | 0 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Kumbha | 6/8 | 0 of 7 | 4 of 5 |
| Meena | 7/7 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
In plain words:
- Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. When the signs are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 apart, bhakoot scores zero; at any other distance it scores the full seven points. For Kanya that means zero with Simha and Tula (its neighbours), Vrishabha and Makara (the other earth signs), and Mesha and Kumbha. Full points come with Kanya itself, Mithuna, Karka, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena.
- Lord friendship (graha maitri) compares Mercury with the other sign's lord. Mercury and Venus are mutual friends, so Vrishabha and Tula have friendly lords. Mercury and Mithuna share a lord. Mercury counts the Moon as an enemy while the Moon counts Mercury as a friend, so Karka is mixed. Mars and Jupiter count Mercury as an enemy, so Mesha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena have unfriendly lords from that side.
- Where bhakoot scores zero but the lords are friends, tradition reads the bhakoot dosha as cancelled. This is clearest with Vrishabha and Tula. With Simha, Makara and Kumbha the friendship runs one way only, and astrologers differ on whether that is enough.
Moon-sign matching is one of eight kootas in Ashtakoot, and Ashtakoot itself is only a screen. A full reading compares the lagnas, Venus, Mars and the 7th houses. No Moon sign pairing decides whether a relationship works.
Health in tradition
Kanya's Kalapurusha part is the waist and intestines, and its lord, Mercury, is linked with the nervous system, the skin and speech. Traditional readings therefore advise a Kanya Moon or lagna to keep regular, simple meals, to watch the effect of worry on digestion and sleep, and to give the mind real rest, not only a change of task.
This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a chart replaces a doctor.
Transits for a Kanya Moon
Transits are read by counting houses from the Moon sign.
- Saturn's Sade Sati runs while Saturn passes through Simha (the 12th from Kanya), Kanya itself and Tula (the 2nd), about two and a half years in each. Saturn counts Mercury as a friend and is exalted in Tula, so tradition reads the second and third phases for a Kanya Moon as comparatively constructive: work, discipline and a steady rebuilding of routines. The dhaiya falls when Saturn is in Dhanu (the 4th) and Mesha (the 8th).
- Saturn's favourable houses for a Kanya Moon are the 3rd (Vrishchika), the 6th (Kumbha, its own sign) and the 11th (Karka).
- Jupiter's yearly transit is read as most helpful in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the Moon, which for Kanya are Tula, Makara, Meena, Vrishabha and Karka.
The dasha running at the time matters more than any single transit. See the transits lesson for how the two are read together.
An illustrative example
Take an example Moon at 17°30′ Kanya. This is a worked example, not a real person.
- Absolute longitude. Kanya starts at 150°, so the Moon is at 150° + 17°30′ = 167°30′.
- Nakshatra. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′. Uttara Phalguni ends at Kanya 10°, and Hasta covers 10° to 23°20′. 17°30′ falls in Hasta.
- Pada. The Moon is 17°30′ − 10° = 7°30′ into Hasta. Each pada spans 3°20′: pada 1 is 0° to 3°20′, pada 2 is 3°20′ to 6°40′, pada 3 is 6°40′ to 10°. 7°30′ is in pada 3, whose traditional name syllable is "Na".
- Dasha at birth. Hasta is ruled by the Moon. The Moon has covered 7°30′ of 13°20′, which is 0.5625 of the nakshatra, so 0.4375 of the Moon's 10 years remains: about 4 years and 4½ months of Moon mahadasha at birth.
The reading: a Kanya Moon in a friend's sign and in a nakshatra ruled by the Moon itself. The mind has Kanya's care and precision, and Hasta makes it skilful with the hands and quick with words, with feelings that move more than Kanya usually shows. A short Moon period at the start of life puts early emphasis on home and mother. The growth edge combines both: trusting what cannot be controlled, and accepting work that is good enough.
