Karka (Cancer) is the fourth rashi of the zodiac, a movable water sign ruled by Chandra (the Moon), spanning 90° to 120° of the sidereal zodiac. It is the sign of nurture, home and belonging, the Moon's only sign and the sign where Jupiter is exalted. The Sun's entry into Karka in mid-July, Karka Sankranti, traditionally marks the start of Dakshinayana, the Sun's southward half of the year.

This page reads Karka as a Moon sign and as a lagna, through its three nakshatras and the grahas strong or weak in it, and in matching and transits. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences.

The nature of Karka

  • Element: water. Water signs feel first. They read moods, remember experiences and respond to what is unspoken.
  • Quality: movable (chara). Like Mesha, Karka starts things, but it starts them for someone: a home, a family, a group to belong to. Its initiative is protective.
  • Symbol: the crab. A hard shell around a soft body, a sideways approach to conflict, and a grip that does not let go. All three are recognisable in the sign.
  • Lord: the Moon. The Moon signifies the mind, the mother, emotions, the public, and water and nourishment. Karka is its own sign, so the sign is the Moon's nature in full.
  • Gender: female. Even-numbered signs are counted female in Jyotish, meaning receptive and conserving energy, not anything about the person.
  • Kalapurusha part: the heart and chest. The place where feeling is felt and where a child is held. Texts vary slightly for the middle signs, and some also give Karka the stomach.

Together these describe water that has been gathered and kept: a well, a home, a memory. The other water signs carry the element differently. Vrishchika is water held deep and still, and Meena water that dissolves into the ocean; Karka is water that shelters.

The Moon rules number 2 in Indian numerology, so the number 2 page describes many of the same qualities from the numerology side.

Karka as Moon sign (Chandra rashi)

A Karka Moon is the Moon at home. Feelings run deep, memory is long and family comes first. Because the Moon changes faster than any other graha, this Moon is especially sensitive to its phase: a bright Karka Moon is read as warm and secure, a dark one as more easily unsettled.

The strengths, as behaviour:

  • Care. A Karka Moon notices who has not eaten, who is quiet tonight and whose birthday is next week. Looking after people is not a duty for this Moon; it is how it feels connected.
  • Memory. Places, conversations and old kindnesses are remembered for years. Many with this Moon keep the family's photographs and stories.
  • Emotional intelligence. A Karka Moon reads a room quickly and responds to what people feel as well as what they say.
  • Loyalty to its own. Once someone is family, by blood or by choice, a Karka Moon will defend them fiercely.

The shadow side is the same depth without a boundary:

  • Moodiness. Feelings change like tides and can colour the whole day. The site's growth edge for this sign is not taking every mood as fact.
  • The shell. Hurt is often met by withdrawing rather than speaking, which leaves the other person guessing.
  • Holding the past. The long memory includes old grievances, and they can be revisited long after others have forgotten.
  • Over-protection. Care can turn into worry, and worry into managing other people's lives for them.

The Moon's phase, nakshatra and company modify this, as the Moon sign lesson explains.

Karka as lagna (ascendant)

With Karka rising, the Moon becomes the lagna lord, which makes the Moon's condition, phase and company especially important in the chart. A Karka lagna gives a receptive, caring presence and a strong tie to home and roots.

Classical descriptions mention a rounded face, a soft manner, expressive eyes and a body that changes weight with circumstances. Treat these as tradition; appearance depends on far more than one sign.

Others usually experience a Karka lagna as warm, approachable and a little reserved at first, someone who becomes much more open once trust is established. The same manner can read as guarded or changeable.

The houses from a Karka lagna:

  • Mars rules the 5th and 10th (Vrishchika and Mesha), a trikona and a kendra, which makes it the yogakaraka in Parashari practice: intelligence and career joined through Mars's drive, even though Mars is debilitated in the lagna sign itself.
  • Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th (Dhanu and Meena). Jupiter is exalted in Karka and counts the Moon as a friend, and its 9th lordship ties it to fortune, teachers and dharma.
  • The Sun rules the 2nd (Simha), joining family wealth and speech to the Moon's friend.
  • Saturn rules the 7th and 8th (Makara and Kumbha), so partners often bring Saturn's seriousness and sense of duty into the life of a Karka native.

The lagna lesson explains how the rising sign is calculated.

The nakshatras of Karka

Karka holds parts of three nakshatras, each of 13°20′ divided into padas of 3°20′:

The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Karka, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.

NakshatraLordPadasDegrees in the sign
PunarvasuJupiter40°00′ – 3°20′
PushyaSaturn1, 2, 3, 43°20′ – 16°40′
AshleshaMercury1, 2, 3, 416°40′ – 30°00′

Punarvasu pada 4 (0° to 3°20′), lord Jupiter. Only the last quarter of Punarvasu falls in Karka. Its theme is the return of the light under Aditi, the mother of the gods, which suits the Moon's sign well: renewal, forgiveness and the ability to come home after a setback. Its gana is deva.

Pushya (3°20′ to 16°40′), lord Saturn. Pushya, the cow's udder under Brihaspati, is called the most nourishing nakshatra, and it contains Jupiter's point of deepest exaltation at 5° Karka. People with a Pushya Moon are dependable, caring and good at helping others thrive; Saturn as lord adds a sense of duty and patience. The growth edge is caring for themselves as well. Its gana is deva.

Ashlesha (16°40′ to 30°), lord Mercury. Ashlesha, the coiled serpent under the Nagas, winds and watches. Its natives read people well, plan quietly and protect themselves, and in Karka this gives a sharp emotional intelligence that is rarely shown in full. The growth edge is openness where trust is earned. Its gana is rakshasa, an independent temperament in matching terms.

The end of Ashlesha, where water gives way to the fire sign Simha, is one of the junctions tradition calls gandanta; astrologers read a Moon very close to it with extra care, as a point of transition. The nakshatra lesson covers all 27.

Grahas in Karka

  • The Moon is in its own sign. Here the Moon is emotional, nurturing and responsive. Its exaltation and moolatrikona are in Vrishabha, where it is calmer and steadier.
  • Jupiter is exalted here, most deeply at 5°. Jupiter signifies wisdom, teachers, children, dharma and expansion, and in the sign of care it is read at its kindest: generous, protective and wise in a practical, family-minded way. The Guru page explains Jupiter in full.
  • Mars is debilitated here, most deeply at 28°. Mars works through force and directness, and Karka through feeling and protection. A debilitated Mars is read as energy that comes out through emotion, defence of the family, or indirect routes rather than open confrontation. Astrologers check for neecha bhanga, the classical conditions that cancel a debilitation, before reading it as weakness. The Mangal page covers Mars's dignities.

Rahu and Ketu have no settled dignity in Karka in the views this site lists. Other planets are read by how each regards the Moon. The Sun counts the Moon as a friend and is comfortable here. Mercury, Venus and Saturn count the Moon as an enemy, so in Karka their thinking, pleasure and discipline all have to pass through the sign's emotional filter first.

Work and money

Karka does well where care and trust are the work. Typical fits, as tendencies:

  • Care: nursing, childcare, counselling, social work, elder care.
  • Home and food: hospitality, catering, home goods, property and housing.
  • Memory: history, archives, heritage, family businesses.
  • The public: roles that serve or represent people, since the Moon signifies the public.
  • Water: shipping, fisheries and anything connected with water, as tradition links the Moon with it.

What wears Karka down is work that feels cold: purely transactional relationships and places where nobody notices anyone else.

With money, Karka is usually careful and security-minded, saving for the family and for a home. The habit to watch is anxious hoarding, or lending to family out of feeling when judgement would say otherwise.

Relationships

In relationships Karka is devoted, protective and nurturing. It shows love through care: cooking, remembering, being there when needed. It wants emotional security and a home in the full sense, a place where both people belong.

The friction comes from the shell. When hurt, Karka may withdraw and expect the partner to notice; the partner, not noticing, feels shut out. Saying what is wrong in words, and letting the partner care for Karka in return, makes the relationship easier on both sides.

The 7th sign from Karka is Makara, ruled by Saturn, so Karka is often drawn to partners who are steady, responsible and slower to show feeling.

Compatibility and kundli matching

Varna, vashya and Bhakoot come from the two Moon signs, and Graha Maitri from the friendship of their lords. The table shows the Bhakoot result and the lord friendship for a Karka Moon against each sign:

Karka with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.

Partner's Moon signDistanceBhakootLord friendship

Vrishabha11/37 of 70.5 of 5
Mithuna12/20 of 71 of 5

Simha2/120 of 75 of 5

Dhanu6/80 of 74 of 5
Makara7/77 of 70.5 of 5
Kumbha8/60 of 70.5 of 5
Meena9/50 of 74 of 5

Bhakoot depends only on distance. Signs 2nd and 12th from Karka (Simha, Mithuna), 5th and 9th (Vrishchika, Meena) and 6th and 8th (Dhanu, Kumbha) score 0 of 7. Karka itself, Kanya, Tula, Makara, Mesha and Vrishabha score 7.

Lord friendship compares the Moon with the other lord both ways. The Moon counts the Sun and Mercury as friends and has no enemies; Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are neutral to it. The Sun returns the friendship, so Karka with Simha has a zero Bhakoot that tradition reads as cancelled by friendly lords. Mars and Jupiter count the Moon as a friend while the Moon counts them as neutral, so for Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena the friendship runs one way; astrologers differ on whether that is enough to cancel the Bhakoot zero.

Mercury, Venus and Saturn count the Moon as an enemy, so pairings with their signs score low on Graha Maitri even where Bhakoot is full. That is a difference in style, the Moon feeling first where the others think, enjoy or plan first.

Moon-sign matching is part of the eight kootas, and the kootas are part of a full chart comparison. No pairing is a verdict. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.

Health in tradition

Tradition gives Karka the heart and chest, and its lord the Moon is linked with the mind, the body's fluids, the chest and sleep. Classical readings advise a Karka native to protect regular sleep and meals, to drink enough water, and to notice how strongly worry and mood are felt in the body.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a sign replaces a doctor.

Transits for a Karka Moon

Counted from a Karka Moon:

  • Sade Sati runs while Saturn crosses Mithuna (12th), Karka (1st) and Simha (2nd). Saturn counts Mercury as a friend and the Moon and the Sun as enemies, and tradition reads the period as one of responsibility, maturity and slower, lasting results. The Sade Sati lesson explains it fully.
  • Dhaiya falls when Saturn crosses Tula (4th), where Saturn is exalted, or Kumbha (8th), its own sign; tradition reads a strong Saturn as a more constructive one.
  • Saturn's favourable houses, the 3rd, 6th and 11th, are Kanya, Dhanu and Vrishabha.
  • Jupiter's yearly transit is read as favourable through Simha (2nd), Vrishchika (5th), Makara (7th), Meena (9th), its own sign, and Vrishabha (11th). Jupiter is debilitated in Makara, so astrologers weigh that year's favourable house against the planet's weaker dignity.

Read transits with the running dasha, never alone; the transits lesson gives the full table.

A worked example

Take a Moon at 9°30′ Karka, an illustrative position, not a real person.

  1. Nakshatra. Punarvasu ends at 3°20′ of Karka and Pushya runs from 3°20′ to 16°40′, so 9°30′ is in Pushya.
  2. Pada. The distance into Pushya is 9°30′ − 3°20′ = 6°10′. Pada 2 runs from 3°20′ to 6°40′ of the nakshatra, so this is pada 2, which in Karka runs from 6°40′ to 10°00′.
  3. Navamsa. Pushya's padas map to Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika navamsas, so pada 2 is Kanya navamsa.
  4. Birth dasha. Pushya's lord is Saturn, so Vimshottari begins in the Saturn mahadasha of 19 years. The Moon has covered 6°10′ of 13°20′, that is 370′ of 800′, or 0.4625. The balance is (1 − 0.4625) × 19 = 10.2125 years, about 10 years and 2½ months of Saturn dasha remaining at birth.

The reading: the Moon in its own sign, so the Karka themes of care, memory and belonging come through fully. Pushya adds dependability and a wish to help others thrive, and Saturn as nakshatra lord gives that care a dutiful, patient quality. The Kanya navamsa adds practical attention to detail, the kind of care that shows up as organisation. The growth edge stays Karka's: not taking every mood as fact.
