Makara (Capricorn) is the tenth rashi, a movable earth sign ruled by Shani (Saturn), and it spans 270° to 300° of the sidereal zodiac. Its symbol is the makara, a sea creature, and its subject is achievement: building something that lasts through steady effort.

This page reads Makara as a Moon sign, as a lagna, through its nakshatras, in matching and under the slow transits. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences.

The nature of Makara

  • Element: earth. Earth signs deal in the practical and the tangible. Makara shares earth with Vrishabha and Kanya, but where Vrishabha's earth enjoys and Kanya's earth refines, Makara's earth builds: it is earth organised into a structure.
  • Quality: movable (chara). Movable signs begin things. Makara is the sign that starts a project and then sees it through, which makes it ambitious rather than merely careful.
  • Lord: Saturn. Shani is the graha of discipline, time, labour, duty and endurance. A sign ruled by Saturn takes the long view and trusts effort more than luck.
  • Symbol: the makara. Indian tradition draws a creature with the head of a deer or goat and the body of a sea animal; descriptions vary. It joins land and water, the climb and the depth.
  • Gender: female. Even-numbered signs are counted as female (receptive, steady) in Jyotish, and Makara, the tenth, is one of them.
  • Kalapurusha: the knees. The cosmic person of Jyotish lies across the zodiac from head (Mesha) to feet (Meena), and Makara falls at the knees, the joints that bend under weight and make climbing possible.

Read together, Makara is the sign of the patient climb. Its tenth place in the zodiac adds to this, because the tenth house of any chart is the house of career, status and public action, and Makara carries that flavour wherever it falls.

Makara as Moon sign: the Makara mind

When the Moon is in Makara at birth, Makara is the person's rashi, and Jyotish reads it as the style of the mind. The Makara Moon is serious, responsible and quietly ambitious. It plans long and works steadily.

How this shows up in behaviour:

  • Planning ahead. A Makara Moon thinks in years. It is often the person who has already worked out what happens if the plan fails.
  • Reliability. It does what it said it would do, on the day it said. It judges others by the same standard.
  • Calm under pressure. Feelings are real but kept in order. In a crisis the Makara Moon becomes practical and is often the steadiest person present.
  • Respect for structure. It likes clear roles, rules that are kept and hierarchies that make sense. It will work within a system before trying to change it.
  • Care through action. It shows love by solving problems, paying bills, turning up. Words come later, if at all.

The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:

  • Over-work. The growth edge for this Moon in the tradition is warmth and rest. A Makara Moon can treat rest as something to earn and never quite earn it.
  • Pessimism. Planning for failure can tip into expecting it.
  • Reserve. Holding feelings back can leave others unsure where they stand.
  • Rigidity. Respect for how things are done can become resistance to how they could be done.

None of this is fixed. In the natural friendship table the Moon counts Saturn as neutral, so Makara is a neutral sign for it, and astrologers read the Moon's phase, nakshatra and company before judging how comfortable a Makara Moon is. The Moon sign lesson explains these modifiers.

Makara as lagna: the rising sign

When Makara is rising at birth, the sign describes the outer person. A Makara lagna gives a composed, mature bearing even in youth; others see reliability.

People tend to experience a Makara lagna as reserved, capable and businesslike on first meeting, warmer once trust is built. Many Makara risings are described as growing into themselves: serious when young, more relaxed and confident with age.

Classical texts describe a Makara lagna as lean and wiry rather than heavy, with a steady gait. These descriptions are tradition and vary widely with the planets in and aspecting the lagna.

For a Makara lagna, Saturn is the lagna lord and also rules the second house (Kumbha), so it speaks for the self and for wealth, family and speech. In the Parashari reading Venus is the yogakaraka for this lagna, because it rules both the fifth house (Vrishabha) and the tenth (Tula), a trine and an angle; a well-placed Venus is read as one of the chart's most helpful planets. The seventh house falls in Karka, ruled by the Moon. The lagna lesson explains how the lagna lord is read.

Nakshatras in Makara

Three nakshatras share Makara's 30 degrees:

The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Makara, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.

NakshatraLordPadasDegrees in the sign
Uttara AshadhaSun2, 3, 40°00′ – 10°00′
ShravanaMoon1, 2, 3, 410°00′ – 23°20′
DhanishtaMars1, 223°20′ – 30°00′

Uttara Ashadha, padas 2 to 4 (0° to 10°, lord Sun). The first quarter of this star falls in Dhanu; the rest is here. Uttara Ashadha is lasting victory, won through persistence and integrity, and in Makara its Sun rulership gives Saturn's patience a sense of public duty. Natives here often succeed later in life and keep what they win. The growth edge is patience with slower people.

Shravana (10° to 23°20′, lord Moon). The star of hearing, whose deity is Vishnu and whose symbol is an ear or three footprints. The Moon's rulership softens Makara with receptiveness: Shravana natives listen, learn, keep traditions and connect people. Their ambition tends to work through knowledge and reputation. The growth edge is speaking their own mind.

Dhanishta, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′ to 30°, lord Mars). The star of rhythm and abundance, ruled by the eight Vasus. Its first half is here; the second half is in Kumbha. Mars, which is exalted in this part of Makara, gives drive and timing. Dhanishta natives tend to be energetic, sociable and good at group effort. The growth edge is depth in close relationships.

Grahas in Makara

Makara is Saturn's own sign. Saturn here is read as a builder on home ground: patient, organised and willing to carry responsibility. Its moolatrikona is in Kumbha, not here. Venus counts Saturn as a friend, so Makara is a friend's sign for Venus, while the Sun counts Saturn as an enemy and works here in an enemy's sign.

Mars is exalted in Makara, with its deepest exaltation at 28°. The tradition explains this by Saturn's discipline giving Mars's energy a target: courage with a plan, force applied at the right moment. An exalted Mangal is read as effective, organised and able to lead in practical work.

Jupiter is debilitated in Makara, deepest at 5°. Guru's faith and generosity meet Saturn's caution and limits. A debilitated Jupiter is not read as a lack of wisdom; it is read as wisdom that has to become practical, and faith that must prove itself in results. Astrologers also check for neecha bhanga, the classical conditions that cancel debilitation, for example when Saturn (the sign's lord) or the Moon (lord of Jupiter's exaltation sign) stands in an angle from the lagna or the Moon. The dignities lesson covers these rules.

Work and money

Makara does its best work where there is a ladder to climb and a clear standard to meet. The sign is commonly associated with:

  • Administration, management and government service, where structure is the work.
  • Engineering, construction and manufacturing, which reward patience and precision.
  • Finance, accounting and long-term business, where steady compounding matters more than flair.
  • Agriculture, mining and land, the traditional earth-and-Saturn fields.

What tires a Makara is chaos, shifting goals and being asked to perform enthusiasm it does not feel. With money, the Makara tendency is careful and long-sighted: it saves, invests slowly and distrusts quick returns. The habit to watch is holding back from spending even on rest or on the people it works so hard for.

Relationships

In relationships a Makara is loyal, dependable and committed for the long term. It shows love by providing and by keeping its promises. What it needs in return is respect for its work and patience with its reserve.

Friction usually comes from distance: a partner who wants open feeling may read Makara's quiet as coldness, and a Makara who is always working can leave a partner feeling second to the job. The strongest Makara relationships make time for rest a shared commitment, not an afterthought.

Compatibility and kundli matching

Here is how Makara relates to each of the twelve rashis as a partner's Moon sign:

Makara with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.

Partner's Moon signDistanceBhakootLord friendship
Mesha4/107 of 70.5 of 5
Vrishabha5/90 of 75 of 5
Mithuna6/80 of 74 of 5
Karka7/77 of 70.5 of 5
Simha8/60 of 70 of 5
Kanya9/50 of 74 of 5
Tula10/47 of 75 of 5
Vrishchika11/37 of 70.5 of 5
Dhanu12/20 of 73 of 5
Makara1/17 of 75 of 5
Kumbha2/120 of 75 of 5
Meena3/117 of 73 of 5

Bhakoot looks only at the distance between the two Moon signs. A 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship scores 0 of 7 points; every other distance scores 7. For Makara that means full points with Makara itself, Meena, Mesha, Karka, Tula and Vrishchika, and zero with Kumbha and Dhanu (2/12), Vrishabha and Kanya (5/9), and Mithuna and Simha (6/8).

Graha maitri then looks at the lords. Kumbha shares Saturn as lord, which scores the full 5, and the tradition commonly reads a shared lord as cancelling the bhakoot dosha. Vrishabha and Tula are ruled by Venus, and Saturn and Venus count each other as friends. Simha is the hardest pairing in the lord table, because the Sun and Saturn count each other as enemies.

Varna and vashya also come from the Moon sign. This site places Makara in the Vaishya varna and the jalachara (water) vashya group; some schools split Makara, giving its first half to the quadruped group, and the matching tables note that difference.

Moon-sign matching covers four of the eight kootas in Ashtakoot matching; the other four come from the nakshatras, and a full reading compares much more. No sign pairing is a verdict on two people.

Health in tradition

Jyotish gives Makara the knees in the Kalapurusha scheme, and Saturn, its lord, is linked with the bones and joints, the teeth and long-standing conditions. Traditional readings therefore advise a Makara to look after the knees and joints, keep moving, and take rest seriously.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a sign replaces a doctor.

Transits for a Makara Moon

Transits are read from the Moon sign, so a Makara Moon has its own calendar of slow transits:

  • Saturn. Sade Sati runs while Saturn crosses Dhanu, Makara and Kumbha, the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon. For a Makara Moon, Saturn is in its own sign for the second and third phases, which the tradition reads as a constructive Sade Sati: demanding, but rewarding steady work. Saturn's transits of Mesha (the 4th) and Simha (the 8th) are the shorter dhaiya periods.
  • Jupiter. Jupiter's yearly transit of Kumbha, Vrishabha, Karka, Kanya and Vrishchika (the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from a Makara Moon) is read as favourable. Its transit of Karka, the 7th, is also its exaltation, which tradition reads as an especially supportive year for partnerships.
  • Rahu and Ketu. The nodes' transits of Meena, Mithuna and Vrishchika (the 3rd, 6th and 11th) are the ones read as easier.

The dasha sets the chapter and transits colour its seasons, so no transit is read alone. The transits lesson explains the method.

The Sun's entry into Makara, around 14 January, is Makar Sankranti, one of the few Indian festivals fixed to the sidereal Sun. It is traditionally celebrated as the start of uttarayana, the Sun's northward course, and is kept across India under many names, as Pongal, Maghi, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu among them.

A worked example

Take an illustrative chart, not a real person, with the Moon at 14°00′ Makara.

  1. Longitude. Makara begins at 270°, so the Moon's sidereal longitude is 270° + 14° = 284°.
  2. Nakshatra. Uttara Ashadha ends at 10° of Makara and Shravana runs from 10° to 23°20′, so 14° falls in Shravana. As a check, 284° ÷ 13°20′ = 21.3, and the 22nd nakshatra (index 21) is Shravana, which begins at 280°.
  3. Pada. The Moon is 14° − 10° = 4°00′ into Shravana. Each pada spans 3°20′, and 4°00′ lies between 3°20′ and 6°40′, so this is pada 2. The traditional name syllable for this pada is "Je".
  4. Dasha at birth. The Moon has covered 4° of 13°20′, which is 0.3 of the nakshatra. Shravana's lord is the Moon, whose mahadasha lasts 10 years, so 0.3 × 10 = 3 years are counted as used and 7 years of Moon mahadasha remain at birth.

The reading: a Makara mind, steady and planning, softened by Shravana's listening and the Moon's own receptiveness. In matching, Shravana is a deva gana star of antya nadi with the monkey as its yoni animal. Life opens with the Moon mahadasha, which tradition associates with home, mother and the inner life, then moves to Mars's seven years, a natural fit for Makara's drive. The growth edge is the one Makara and Shravana share: saying what it feels and needs, not only what it has done.
