Correspondences of the ruling graha, listed as tradition. Nothing here is a remedy or something you need to buy.

Number 4 in Indian numerology is the number of Rahu: it stands for method, hard work and thinking that does not follow the crowd. It is the Moolank of everyone born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st of a month, and it can also be a person's Bhagyank, name number or mobile number total.

This page goes through 4 in depth. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, which come from the same table as every result card on this site.

Why does Rahu rule number 4?

Indian numerology gives each number from 1 to 9 to one of the nine grahas, and 4 goes to Rahu, the north node of the Moon. Rahu is not a visible body but one of the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, where eclipses happen. In the Puranic story, the asura Svarbhanu, cut in two by Vishnu, lives on as Rahu (the head) and Ketu (the body).

In Jyotish Rahu signifies the unconventional and the foreign, technology, ambition, sudden change and the hunger for what one does not yet have, which in excess becomes obsession. It owns no sign in the classical scheme, so it is read as the graha of things that do not fit the existing order.

Number 4 adds a second layer. It is the number of the square, four sides and four walls, and numerology reads it as structure. The two layers meet in the typical 4: someone who questions how things are done and then, unusually, does the slow work of building a better way.

Rahu's friendships and the table for 4

Classical Jyotish gives the seven visible grahas a settled table of natural friendships. Rahu and Ketu are not given one in the same way, and schools differ. A widely repeated Jyotish saying treats Rahu as acting like Saturn, and many practitioners borrow Saturn's friendships for it: Mercury and Venus as friends, the Sun, the Moon and Mars as enemies.

The numerology table for 4 follows that only in part:

  • 5 and 6 (Mercury and Venus) are friendly to 4, matching Saturn's friends.
  • 2 (Moon) is opposing in both directions. The usual explanation is the eclipse story, in which Rahu swallows the Moon.
  • 7 (Ketu) is friendly in both directions: Rahu and Ketu are two halves of one being.
  • 1 (Sun) is friendly to 4, although the Sun is Saturn's enemy and is eclipsed by Rahu just as the Moon is. This follows Cheiro, who linked 1 and 4 closely. The Sun's own row is neutral to 4.
  • 8 (Saturn) is opposing from 4's side, although a Saturn-like Rahu would be at ease with Saturn. Practitioners read it as two heavy numbers together. 8's row is neutral to 4.
  • 4 with 4 is opposing, a pair on which schools disagree. 3 and 9 are neutral.

So the table for 4 is numerology's own, built from Rahu's character and Cheiro's pairings rather than a classical list. This site follows the common version.

Is 4 an unlucky number?

Many people arrive here having been told that 4 means obstacles, sudden losses or bad luck. Part of that comes from Rahu's link with eclipses and confusion. Part comes from elsewhere: in Chinese the word for four sounds like the word for death, and 13, one of the dates that gives Moolank 4, is feared in the West.

None of this makes a number unlucky. No number is lucky or unlucky on its own. What tradition actually describes for 4 is a pattern: results that come through effort rather than ease, a habit of taking a different road, and changes that tend to arrive suddenly. Read that way, a 4 is a builder who often gets there by an unusual route and usually keeps what they build, because they built it carefully.

What is a number 4 person like?

The strengths of 4 show up as behaviour:

  • Method. A 4 is often the one who turns a vague plan into a checklist or a timetable, and then keeps to it.
  • Hard work. A 4 does not expect things to be easy and is rarely discouraged when they are not. Over months of steady effort, a 4 outlasts more brilliant starters.
  • Seeing another angle. Rahu shows in the question nobody else asks: why is this done this way at all? A 4 often spots the flaw in an accepted method.
  • Reliability. If a 4 says the work will be ready on Friday, it usually is.

The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:

  • Rigidity. Once a 4 has a system that works, a change to it can feel like an attack rather than an improvement.
  • Contrariness. Questioning everything can slide into disagreeing for its own sake.
  • Worry. A 4 plans for what could go wrong, and can stay there too long.
  • Feeling unrewarded. A 4 may believe they work harder than others for the same result, and quietly resent it.

Numerology describes tendencies, not a fixed character. The growth edge for 4 is flexibility: accepting that not every change is a threat, and letting some things be easy.

Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st

All four dates give Moolank 4, but the digits underneath differ, and the Chaldean tradition gives each two-digit total its own reading:

  • 13Change and renewalIn the Chaldean tradition 13 is a number of change and renewal, not of misfortune: upheaval that clears the ground for something new, with changes of plan and place. As the total of a name or date it can show as a life that changes direction more than once, often by choice. It carries real power when it is used to rebuild. When change is only resisted, the same energy turns into restlessness, so work with it deliberately.
  • 22The dreamerIn Cheiro's list 22 describes a person of good intentions whose judgement can be clouded by illusion or by other people's influence. As the total of a name or date it can show as trusting the wrong advice, or holding on to a hopeful picture after the facts have changed. The number asks for clear judgement and a check on wishful thinking. Test plans against evidence, seek a second view, and make the final decision yourself.
  • 31The solitaryCheiro read 31 much like 30, with more self-reliance and a stronger taste for solitude: a mind that is self-contained and somewhat set apart from others. As the total of a name or date it often shows as independence and deep focus, with less interest in worldly position. It is good for study, research and craft. The balance is keeping some company along the way, so that good work is shared and supported rather than done alone.
  • 40The solitaryRead like 31: like 30, with more self-reliance and a stronger taste for solitude, a mind that is self-contained and somewhat set apart from others. As the total of a name or date it often shows as independence and deep focus, with less interest in worldly position. It is good for study, research and craft. The balance is keeping some company along the way, so that good work is shared and supported.
  • 49The solitaryRead like 31: like 30, with more self-reliance and a taste for solitude, a mind that is self-contained and somewhat apart from the crowd. As the total of a name or date it often shows as independence, deep focus and less interest in worldly position. It suits study, research and craft. The balance is keeping some company along the way, so that good work is shared and supported rather than done alone.
  • Compound readings follow the Chaldean tradition and are under review.
  • Born on the 4th. The purest form: methodical, private, hardworking and a little fixed in habits, with Rahu's unconventional streak under a sensible surface.
  • Born on the 13th. A 1 (Sun) and a 3 (Jupiter) underneath add confidence and a teacher's streak. 13 gives 4 much of its reputation, yet its Chaldean reading in this site's table is "change and renewal": upheaval that clears the ground for something new. These 4s often change direction completely more than once, and do best when they rebuild rather than resist.
  • Born on the 22nd. Two 2s, the Moon twice, sit underneath. The day total, 22, is a master number; this site reduces the Moolank to one digit, so these people have Moolank 4, but some schools read the master number there, "the builder". Cheiro's compound reading of 22 is "the dreamer": fine intentions that can be clouded by illusion or by others' influence. Both fit: a 4 with large ideas and an imaginative streak, who needs clear judgement to bring them down to earth.
  • Born on the 31st. The digits of 13 reversed. The reading of 31 is "the solitary": self-reliance and a taste for solitude, good for study and craft. These 4s often work best alone, and the balance is keeping some company along the way.

Number 4 as your Moolank

Moolank, the root number, is read from the day of birth and describes temperament. A Moolank 4 child may take things apart to see how they work, or insist on doing a task in their own order. As an adult, a Moolank 4 is usually described as dependable, a little reserved, and occasionally surprising: the quiet colleague with strong, unusual opinions and the facts to back them.

Number 4 as your Bhagyank

Bhagyank, the destiny number, is read from the full date of birth. With Bhagyank 4, life keeps pointing towards building something durable, often by a route nobody planned: work that needs patience and systems, and moments of sudden change that ask for a rebuild rather than a retreat.

When the full digit sum of the date is exactly 22, as for 11 November 1980, this site shows Bhagyank 4 with a master-number note.

Number 4 as a name number or mobile number

As a name number, 4 reads as solid and trustworthy rather than glamorous. It suits an engineer or a firm that wants to be relied on, and gives no reason for the alarm popular numerology sometimes attaches to it.

As a mobile number total, 4 is read as a number for organised, detailed work: operations, accounts, technical support. Tradition reads it as most comfortable when your Moolank or Bhagyank is friendly to 4. Treat this as a small factor; a phone number does not decide outcomes.

Work and money

A 4 tends to do well where method and originality are both needed:

  • Technology and systems: software, data, engineering and research, suiting Rahu's link with technology.
  • Operations and accounts: administration, auditing and any role that keeps an organisation running correctly.
  • Building and making: construction, architecture, manufacturing and skilled trades.
  • Foreign and unconventional fields: work abroad, import and export, new industries.

What drains a 4 is aimless change and roles where showmanship counts for more than substance.

With money, a 4 usually earns steadily and saves carefully. The habits to watch come from both sides of the number: worry that turns into hoarding, and, after long caution, Rahu's sudden appetite for a speculative bet.

Relationships and compatibility

In relationships a 4 is loyal and shows care in practical ways: fixing things, keeping promises, planning the details. What a 4 needs in return is reliability and honesty; shifting plans unsettle a 4 more than they admit.

The friction usually comes from routine. A 4 can treat their way of running a household as the only sensible way. The strongest relationships for a 4 are those in which the partner brings ease and the 4 learns to accept it.

Here is how 4 relates to each number, read from both sides of the table:

How 4 relates to each number. The table is read from both sides, because tradition does not always make a pairing mutual.

A few pairings are worth a word:

  • 4 and 1: not mutual. 4 counts 1 as friendly while 1 is neutral to 4. Cheiro linked the two: the 1 starts, the 4 builds.
  • 4 and 5: also not mutual. 4 counts 5 as friendly while 5 is neutral to 4. The 5 loosens the 4; the 4 gives the 5 a plan.
  • 4 and 2: opposing in both directions, Rahu and the Moon of the eclipse story. The 2 wants reassurance; the 4 wants method. It works when the 4 says what they feel and the 2 trusts the plan.
  • 4 and 8: not mutual. 4 counts 8 as opposing while 8 is neutral to 4. Both work hard and expect delay, and the pair does well when it deliberately makes room for rest. Two 4s, also opposing here, share that risk.

For two whole profiles, use the compatibility calculator. No number pairing decides whether a relationship succeeds.

Health in tradition

Jyotish gives Rahu no body part as clearly as it gives the heart to the Sun. Instead, tradition links Rahu with the nerves, with anxiety and disturbed sleep, and with conditions that are hard to diagnose or come on suddenly. Traditional readings therefore tell a 4 to watch overwork and worry and keep regular routines.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a number replaces a doctor.

Timing: days, dates and personal years

Tradition gives 4 its own times:

  • Day: Saturday. Rahu has no day of its own in the seven-day week, and tradition gives it Saturn's.
  • Dates: the 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st of any month.
  • Personal years: a personal year 4, the year of work and foundations, suits a 4's nature. A personal year 5 brings change and movement, which a 4 can find unsettling; it is the year that teaches flexibility. A personal year 8 brings the results of past effort, and since 4 counts 8 as opposing, it can feel heavy; it rewards patience more than force.

The personal year calculator works out which year of the cycle you are in.

Number 4 in the Lo Shu grid

In the Lo Shu grid, 4 sits in the top-left cell, on three planes: the mental plane (4-9-2), the thought plane (4-3-8) and the golden plane (4-5-6). Its presence is read as order, planning and the ability to organise. On this site the Moolank is placed on the grid, so everyone with Moolank 4 has at least one 4.

  • One 4 is read as practical organisation, used when it is needed.
  • Two 4s are read as strong method and a capacity for sustained work.
  • Three or more 4s are read as order tipping into rigidity: over-planning, and difficulty resting until everything is done.
  • No 4 means order is learned rather than instinctive. Structure comes through habits and tools rather than by nature.

Traditional practices linked to Rahu

Indian tradition associates several everyday practices with Rahu. They are listed here as culture, not as remedies:

  • Rahu kaal, a period of about an hour and a half each day, at a different time on each weekday, which many families avoid for starting new work or journeys.
  • Saturday observances, shared with Saturn.
  • Worship of Durga, whom tradition associates with Rahu, and the Rahu verse of the Navagraha Stotra or a short mantra such as "Om Rahave Namah".

Hessonite (gomed) and lead are Rahu's traditional gem and metal. They are listed in the panel above for completeness. This site does not recommend buying gemstones or any object for results.

A worked example

Take a person born on 13 May 1990.

  1. Moolank: the day is 13, and 1 + 3 = 4.
  2. Bhagyank: 1 + 3 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
  3. The compound behind the Moolank is 13, "change and renewal".

The reading: a 4 with the Sun and Jupiter underneath, so method with more confidence than the plain 4. The relation is not mutual: 4 counts 1 as friendly, while 1 is neutral to 4. The root leans towards the destiny, and the destiny neither helps nor resists. Life keeps asking this careful person to lead in their own name. The 13 adds at least one sharp change of direction; the growth edge is to treat it as a rebuild rather than a loss.
