Number 5 in Indian numerology is the number of Mercury: it stands for communication, movement and quick, adaptable thinking. It is the Moolank of everyone born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd of a month, and it can also be a person's Bhagyank, name number or mobile number total.
This page goes through 5 in depth. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, which come from the same table as every result card on this site.
Why does Mercury rule number 5?
Indian numerology gives each number from 1 to 9 to one of the nine grahas, and 5 goes to Mercury, Budha. In Jyotish Mercury signifies the intellect (buddhi), speech, writing, trade, calculation and youthfulness; it is called the prince among the grahas. It never strays far from the Sun, and Jyotish also describes Mercury as taking on the nature of the grahas it is joined with: gentle among gentle planets, harsh among harsh ones.
Number 5 borrows that character. It sits in the middle of the numbers 1 to 9, four on either side, and in the very centre of the Lo Shu grid. A 5 is the go-between: the person who talks to everyone, picks up a new skill in a weekend and adapts to whatever room they walk into.
Mercury's friendships and the table for 5
In Jyotish Mercury counts the Sun and Venus as friends; Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as neutral; and the Moon as its one enemy. The numerology table for 5 follows this in places and is noticeably more generous in others:
- 1 and 6 (Sun and Venus) are friendly to 5, matching Mercury's friends.
- 8 and 9 (Saturn and Mars) are neutral from 5's side, matching Mercury's neutrals.
- 2 (Moon) is friendly to 5, although the Moon is Mercury's natural enemy. In the Puranic story Budha is the Moon's son, and the friendship runs one way: the Moon counts Mercury as a friend, while Mercury counts the Moon as an enemy. The numerology table follows the Moon's side and makes 2 and 5 friendly in both directions.
- 3 (Jupiter) is friendly to 5, although Mercury is neutral to Jupiter and Jupiter counts Mercury as an enemy.
- 4 and 7 (Rahu and Ketu) are neutral. Classical texts give the two nodes no settled friendship list, so there is nothing to compare here.
The other side of the table is just as striking. Every number from 1 to 9 counts 5 as friendly, including 9, although Mars treats Mercury as an enemy in Jyotish. And 5 has no opposing numbers at all. Practitioners explain both through Mercury's mixing nature: a graha that becomes like its company is read as a number that gets on with everyone. This site follows the common numerology table and notes the differences so you can see where the schools part.
What is a number 5 person like?
The strengths of 5 show up as behaviour:
- Quick learning. A 5 often picks up a new app, a new language or a new job faster than anyone expected, usually by trying it rather than reading about it.
- Talking and connecting. A 5 can start a conversation with a stranger on a train and leave with a business contact.
- Commercial sense. Mercury is the graha of trade, and a 5 tends to see the deal in a situation: what something is worth, who needs it, and how to bring the two together.
- Adaptability. Plans change and a 5 changes with them, often with some relief. Travel, moves and new teams suit them.
- Lightness. Mercury is the youthful graha, and many 5s keep a playful, curious manner well into later life.
The shadow side is the same qualities pushed too far:
- Scattering. Five interests and three side projects can leave a 5 with plenty started and little finished.
- Boredom. Routine that a 4 finds comforting can feel to a 5 like confinement, and they may leave a good situation simply because it stopped being new.
- Nervous energy. A busy mind can turn into overthinking, restlessness and difficulty switching off at night.
- Talking round things. Skill with words can be used to avoid a hard conversation.
- Haste. A 5 may decide quickly and commit money or time before the details are clear.
None of this is fixed. Numerology describes tendencies; the growth edge for 5 is depth: staying with one thing long enough to master it.
Born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd
All three dates give Moolank 5, but the digits underneath differ. The Chaldean tradition also gives each two-digit total its own reading:
- 14MovementCheiro linked 14 with movement and with the combining of people and things: trade, travel, communication and changes of business. As the total of a name or date it often shows as someone who does well in dealings with others, especially where money changes hands. Tradition adds a caution about speculation and about acting too quickly on other people's advice. The constructive path is to enjoy the movement while keeping risks measured and decisions your own.
- 23Royal star of the lionCheiro called 23 the royal star of the lion: a promise of success, with help from people in authority and protection from those in high places. As the total of a name or date it often shows as mentors, seniors or institutions that open doors at the right moment. It is one of the fortunate numbers, read as support arriving for what you set out to do. It works best when your aims are clear.
- 32The persuaderCheiro grouped 32 with 14 and 23 as a magnetic number, strong in communication, associations and public life. As the total of a name or date it often shows as ease with people, a voice that carries and plans that draw others in. It holds its promise when the person keeps to their own opinion. When others' stubbornness or poor judgement is allowed to steer, plans can go off course, so listen widely but decide for yourself.

As the total of a name or date it often shows as ease with people and a voice that carries. It holds its promise when the person keeps to their own opinion; when others' stubbornness is allowed to steer, plans can go off course. Listen widely, but keep the final judgement your own.

- Compound readings follow the Chaldean tradition and are under review.
- Born on the 5th. The purest form of the number. Mercury comes through directly: quick, talkative, curious and restless, with nothing underneath to slow it down.
- Born on the 14th. Underneath this 5 are a 1 (Sun) and a 4 (Rahu). The Sun adds independence; Rahu adds an appetite for risk, novelty and the unconventional. The reading of 14 is "movement": trade, travel and the combining of people and ideas, with gains through dealings with others. Its caution is against over-reach in speculation, and that is the habit these 5s most need to watch.
- Born on the 23rd. Underneath are a 2 (Moon) and a 3 (Jupiter), feeling for people and good judgement. Cheiro called 23 the "royal star of the lion", one of the fortunate compounds, read as success with help from people in authority. These 5s often find mentors and backers, and do well when they let others help.
Number 5 as your Moolank
Moolank, the root number, is read from the day of birth alone and describes temperament. A Moolank 5 child is often the one asking "why" and "what if" in quick succession, making friends in every new place and getting bored by the second week of a holiday. As an adult, a Moolank 5 is usually described as sociable, witty and hard to pin down. Friends and colleagues tend to see a Moolank 5 as good company, and sometimes as someone whose plans change faster than theirs.
Number 5 as your Bhagyank
Bhagyank, the destiny number, is read from the full date of birth and describes the direction life keeps pulling you in. With Bhagyank 5, that direction is movement: travel, changes of job or city, many kinds of people, and work that involves exchange of some kind, whether goods, money, words or ideas.
Someone with a steadier Moolank, say 4 or 8, and Bhagyank 5 often describes a life that would not stay still: transfers, new roles, opportunities in other places. The lesson of Bhagyank 5 is to use that movement well, choosing which changes to accept rather than accepting all of them.
Number 5 as a name number or mobile number
As a name number, 5 gives a name liveliness and ease. It is easy to remember and easy to say, and practitioners often consider it good for a trading business or anyone whose work depends on being in touch with many people.
As a mobile number total, 5 is read as a number of contact and exchange, suited to sales, networking and work done largely on the phone. Because every number in this site's table counts 5 as friendly, tradition reads a 5 total as comfortable for most people. Treat this as a small factor; a phone number does not decide outcomes.
Work and money
A 5 tends to do well wherever variety and communication come together:
- Trade and sales: business, marketing, broking, retail and any role built on deals and customers.
- Words: writing, journalism, media, teaching, translation and public speaking.
- Numbers and analysis: accounting, finance and data work, where Mercury's link with calculation shows.
- Movement: travel, tourism, logistics and roles that change location often.
What drains a 5 is the opposite: repetitive work, isolation, slow decisions and roles that offer nothing new to learn.
With money, a 5 can often earn from several sources at once and earn quickly. The habits to watch are spending on impulse, chasing a quick gain through speculation, and spreading money across too many half-finished ventures.
Relationships and compatibility
In relationships a 5 is fun, curious and generous with time and attention. They show care through conversation, plans and humour. What a 5 needs in return is freedom and talk. Possessiveness, or a partner who expects every evening to look the same, makes a 5 restless.
The friction usually comes from consistency. A 5 can be warm one week and distracted the next, and may joke past a conversation that needs to be serious. The strongest relationships for a 5 are those with enough trust that the 5 does not feel held, and enough steadiness that the 5 has somewhere to come back to.
Here is how 5 relates to each number, read from both sides of the table:
How 5 relates to each number. The table is read from both sides, because tradition does not always make a pairing mutual.
| Number | Graha | From 5's side | From their side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | Friendly | Friendly |
| 2 | Moon | Friendly | Friendly |
| 3 | Jupiter | Friendly | Friendly |
| 4 | Rahu | Neutral | Friendly |
| 5 | Mercury | Friendly | Friendly |
| 6 | Venus | Friendly | Friendly |
| 7 | Ketu | Neutral | Friendly |
| 8 | Saturn | Neutral | Friendly |
| 9 | Mars | Neutral | Friendly |
A few pairings are worth a word:
- 5 and 2: Mercury and the Moon, enemies in Jyotish but friendly in this table in both directions. The 2's feeling slows the 5 down, and the 5's lightness lifts the 2. It works best when the 5 makes time for the 2's need to talk things through.
- 5 and 6: Mercury and Venus, friends in both systems. Wit meets charm, and the pair usually shares a love of comfort, conversation and good company.
- 5 and 8: not mutual. 8 counts 5 as friendly while 5 is neutral to 8, which matches Jyotish exactly: Saturn counts Mercury as a friend, Mercury is neutral to Saturn.
- 5 with 4, 7 and 9: also not mutual, in the same way. Each counts 5 as friendly while 5 is neutral to them. The 5 is welcomed by almost everyone; the question is whether the 5 values the other's pace in return.
For two whole profiles, Moolank and Bhagyank together, use the compatibility calculator. No number pairing decides whether a relationship succeeds.
Health in tradition
Jyotish links Mercury with the nervous system, the skin and speech, and with the quickness of the mind. Traditional readings therefore tell a 5 to watch nervous strain, irregular meals and sleep from a crowded schedule, and the habit of never quite switching off.
This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a number replaces a doctor.
Timing: days, dates and personal years
Tradition gives 5 its own times:
- Day: Wednesday, Mercury's day, called Budhvar.
- Dates: the 5th, 14th and 23rd of any month, the dates that share the number.
- Personal years: a personal year 5, the year of change and freedom, is the 5's natural year, often full of travel, new people and new methods; the care is choosing which changes to keep. A personal year 4, the year of work and foundations, asks a 5 for routine and patience, which can feel slow, and is the year that most rewards their growth edge of depth. A personal year 7, for reflection and study, is quieter than a 5 likes and suits learning one subject well.
The personal year calculator works out which year of the cycle you are in.
Number 5 in the Lo Shu grid
In the Lo Shu grid, 5 sits in the centre cell, the only cell that belongs to four planes: the emotional plane (3-5-7), the will plane (9-5-1), the golden plane (4-5-6) and the silver plane (2-5-8). Its presence is read as balance and the ability to hold the other qualities together. On this site the Moolank is placed on the grid, so everyone with Moolank 5 has at least one 5.
- One 5 is read as balance: steadiness of feeling and a sense of direction.
- Two 5s are read as strong drive and versatility, with plenty of energy for many things.
- Three or more 5s are read as energy tipping into restlessness and haste, with feelings that run quickly up and down.
- No 5 means balance is practised rather than automatic. With the centre empty, none of the four planes through it can be complete, which is why practitioners pay attention to it. It is still a learning edge, not a loss.
Traditional practices linked to Mercury
Indian tradition associates several everyday practices with Mercury. They are listed here as culture, not as remedies:
- Wednesday observances, and in many homes Wednesday worship of Ganesha, who is honoured as the remover of obstacles and the patron of learning.
- The Vishnu Sahasranama, which tradition commonly associates with Mercury, or a short mantra such as "Om Budhaya Namah".
- Care with speech and with accounts, since Mercury signifies both: keeping promises made in words and keeping records straight.
The emerald (panna) and bronze are Mercury's traditional gem and metal. They are listed in the panel above for completeness. This site does not recommend buying gemstones or any object for results.
A worked example
Take a person born on 14 February 1989.
- Moolank: the day is 14, and 1 + 4 = 5.
- Bhagyank: 1 + 4 + 0 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 34, then 3 + 4 = 7.
- The compound behind the Moolank is 14, "movement".
The reading: a 5 with the Sun and Rahu underneath, so a quick, independent mind with an appetite for the new. The Bhagyank 7 (Ketu) is the opposite kind of number: inward, reflective and drawn to research. The relation is not mutual: 7 counts 5 as friendly, while 5 is neutral to 7. Life is likely to keep offering this person chances to study something in depth, and the 14's habit of chasing the next opportunity is what can make them miss it. The growth edge is the 5's usual one, depth, and here the Bhagyank points straight at it.
