Lesson 6 of 16 · Core numbers
Bhagyank: your destiny number
Bhagyank is the sum of every digit in your full date of birth, reduced. Learn what it describes, how to calculate it, and how it differs from Moolank.

Bhagyank (भाग्यांक) is the sum of all the digits of your full date of birth reduced to a single digit, and it describes the direction your life tends to take: the kinds of work, people and situations that keep returning.
What does Bhagyank describe?
Where Moolank is who you are by instinct, Bhagyank is where life keeps pointing you. A person with Moolank 2 and Bhagyank 8 may be gentle by nature yet keep landing in roles that demand discipline and responsibility. Bhagyank is read for themes and opportunities, not for personality.
Practitioners often say that Bhagyank shows more clearly with age. In the early years temperament dominates, which is Moolank's territory. As a person gathers experience, the same kinds of situation tend to come back: the same type of job offer, the same role in a family, the same sort of problem to solve. Bhagyank names that pattern. It describes a direction, not a fixed destination, and nothing in it decides what a person does with the opportunities it describes.
How is Bhagyank calculated?
- Write the date as DD MM YYYY.
- Add all eight digits.
- Reduce to a single digit.
Because reduction keeps the remainder when dividing by 9, you can also reduce day, month and year separately and add the three results; the final digit is the same. The calculator adds all eight digits in one go and shows that sum before reducing it, because the full total matters for two other things on the card: the compound reading and the master-number note.
Worked example
Born 14 August 1990, written 14 08 1990:
1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5.
Bhagyank 5, ruled by Mercury: a life that keeps offering movement, trade and communication. Checking by parts: day 14 → 5, month 8 → 8, year 1990 → 1; 5 + 8 + 1 = 14 → 5. Same answer.
The calculator's last line shows 1+4+0+8+1+9+9+0 = 32 → 5. Because 32 is between 10 and 52, the card also shows the Chaldean reading of compound 32, "the persuader", as background to the single digit.
A second example
Born 3 February 2005, written 03 02 2005:
0 + 3 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 12, and 1 + 2 = 3.
Bhagyank 3, ruled by Jupiter: a path that keeps leading towards learning, teaching and explaining things to others. By parts: day 3, month 2, year 2005 → 7; 3 + 2 + 7 = 12 → 3. The five zeros add nothing, which is why dates in the 2000s often have small totals. The card shows the compound reading for 12 under the main meaning.
This person's Moolank is also 3, from the day. When the two numbers match, nature and path point the same way, a case lesson 7 looks at closely.
When does the master-number note appear?
The full total, before any reduction, decides it. Two dates show the difference:
| Date of birth | Eight-digit sum | Reduction | Bhagyank | Master note? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 February 1990 | 1+0+0+2+1+9+9+0 = 22 | 22 → 4 | 4 | Yes, 22 |
| 29 September 1989 | 2+9+0+9+1+9+8+9 = 47 | 47 → 11 → 2 | 2 | No |
In the first, the total is exactly 22, so the card adds a note that 22 is a master number which still reduces to 4. In the second, 11 appears only on the way down, and the site's default setting does not note it. Lesson 9 explains the three possible settings and why this one is the default.
Where do schools disagree?
- All digits at once, or part by part. A common Western method reduces day, month and year separately, keeps any 11 or 22 found along the way, and adds the three results. For 29 September 1989 that gives 11 (from 29) + 9 + 9 (from 1989 → 27 → 9) = 29 → 11, so a master number is reported. Adding all eight digits gives 47 → 11 → 2, and the site notes no master. Both methods always agree on the final digit, 2 here; they differ only on whether a master number is reported. This site adds all eight digits, and the rule is a switch in its settings that a reviewing numerologist can change.
- What the number is called. Life path, destiny number and Bhagyank are the same arithmetic. The meanings differ by tradition, and this site uses the Indian planetary reading.
- Whether to read the compound. Chaldean practice reads the two-digit total as well as the single digit. Many practitioners use only the digit. The site shows both and leads with the digit.
The nine Bhagyanks
| Number | Planet | In short | Lucky colours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | The leader: original, self-driven and confident. | gold, orange, yellow |
| 2 | Moon | The diplomat: intuitive, gentle and cooperative. | white, cream, light green |
| 3 | Jupiter | The teacher: wise, expressive and optimistic. | yellow, purple, violet |
| 4 | Rahu | The builder: practical, hardworking and original in thought. | blue, grey, khaki |
| 5 | Mercury | The communicator: quick, adaptable and commercially sharp. | green, light grey, white |
| 6 | Venus | The nurturer: warm, artistic and family-minded. | white, light blue, pink |
| 7 | Ketu | The seeker: analytical, reflective and spiritually inclined. | light green, smoky grey, white |
| 8 | Saturn | The achiever: disciplined, patient and built for the long game. | dark blue, black, dark grey |
| 9 | Mars | The warrior: energetic, brave and generous. | red, maroon, crimson |
The descriptions are the same nine used for Moolank; the difference is what you apply them to. For Bhagyank, read "this is the kind of situation that recurs" rather than "this is how I am". The theme each number brings as a Bhagyank:
| Bhagyank | The direction that keeps returning |
|---|---|
| 1 | Standing on your own feet and building something in your name |
| 2 | Bringing people together and building trust over time |
| 3 | Learning, teaching and widening other people's horizons |
| 4 | Lasting structures built by steady effort, often by an unusual route |
| 5 | Movement, variety and the exchange of ideas or goods |
| 6 | Home, family, care and the making of harmony |
| 7 | Research, depth and inner understanding |
| 8 | Responsibility, management and results built over years |
| 9 | Action on behalf of others and causes larger than yourself |
Bhagyank and Moolank side by side
| Question | Moolank | Bhagyank |
|---|---|---|
| Which digits? | The day only | Every digit of DD MM YYYY |
| What does it describe? | Temperament, first instincts | Recurring themes and direction |
| When is it most visible? | From childhood | Often more clearly with age |
| Compound reading shown? | No | Yes, for totals of 10 and above |
| Master-number note? | No | When the total is exactly 11, 22 or 33 |
Most people have two different numbers. Lesson 7 shows how to read them together using the friendly and opposing table. For now, note both and look up their relation.
Common mistakes
- Writing a two-digit year. 14 08 90 gives 1+4+0+8+9+0 = 22 → 4, a false master number and the wrong Bhagyank. The full year gives 32 → 5. Always use all four digits.
- Confusing Bhagyank with the personal year. Bhagyank never changes. The number that moves each year is the personal year, covered in lesson 14.
- Reading Bhagyank as personality. A Bhagyank 9 is not necessarily fiery. It describes the situations that keep arriving, which may ask for courage from someone who is naturally calm.
- Treating 11, 22 or 33 as a separate tenth number. On this site a master number is a note on top of 2, 4 or 6, and the single-digit meaning comes first.
