Moolank: your root number

Moolank is your day of birth reduced to one digit. Learn what it describes, how to calculate it, and what each of the nine Moolanks means.

Moolank (मूलांक) is the number of your day of birth reduced to a single digit, and it describes your basic nature: how you instinctively think, react and present yourself.

What does Moolank describe?

Moolank is read as the surface of the personality, the part people meet first. It is also called the psychic number, because it reflects how you see yourself. It does not describe your life's direction; that is the job of Bhagyank, the destiny number, which uses the whole date and is covered in lesson 6.

In practice Moolank answers everyday questions. How do you behave in a new group? Do you decide quickly or wait? What do people notice about you before they know you well? A Moolank 1 is usually the one who takes charge, a Moolank 7 the one who watches before speaking. These are tendencies, not rules, and they show most clearly when a person is not thinking about how they come across.

Each Moolank borrows its character from the graha that rules the number, as set out in lesson 4. That link is why a Moolank reading so often mentions the Sun, the Moon, Saturn and the rest.

How is Moolank calculated?

Take the day of the month you were born and reduce it to one digit. Month and year play no part.

  • Born on the 5th: Moolank 5.
  • Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5.
  • Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5.

Days 5, 14 and 23 share a Moolank, and tradition reads them as the same basic nature with small differences from the compound number. Reduction is explained step by step in lesson 3.

Which birth dates share a Moolank?

A month has at most 31 days, so every Moolank comes from three or four dates. The numbers 1 to 4 get four dates each and 5 to 9 get three.

These same dates are listed as each number's favourable dates in the Vedic attributes panel of the result card, which is why a Moolank 8 sees 8, 17 and 26 there.

Each number page goes further than this table, with separate notes for each birth date. For example, number 1 explains how a 1 born on the 28th is read differently from one born on the 1st.

Worked example

Born on 29 August 1994: the day is 29, so 2 + 9 = 11 and 1 + 1 = 2. Moolank 2, ruled by the Moon: sensitive, cooperative, intuitive, with the growth edge of steadiness. Notice that 11 appeared on the way; lesson 9 explains what some numerologists make of that. The calculator's "How it was calculated" line shows this as Day: 29 → 11 → 2.

A second example

Born on 31 December 1985: the day is 31, so 3 + 1 = 4. The calculator shows Day: 31 → 4. Month 12 and year 1985 are ignored.

Moolank 4 is ruled by Rahu: practical, hardworking and original in thought, with the growth edge of flexibility. Someone with this Moolank often works steadily in the background and then surprises people with an unusual solution. The person born on 31 December shares this Moolank with everyone born on the 4th, 13th or 22nd of any month. See number 4 for how those four dates are told apart.

Where do schools disagree?

Moolank is the simplest number in Indian numerology, yet practitioners still differ on three points.

  • The compound day. Some read only the single digit. Others give weight to the two-digit day, so a 19 and a 28 are read as quite different 1s. This site's calculator shows the single digit, and the number pages carry the date-by-date notes.
  • Master days. Born on the 11th or 22nd, some practitioners keep 11 or 22 as the root number. This site always reduces Moolank to 1 to 9 and does not add a master-number note to the Moolank card. Master numbers are noted on Bhagyank and name totals instead, as lesson 9 explains.
  • When the day begins. The civil date changes at midnight, while the Vedic day runs from sunrise to sunrise. A few practitioners would count a birth at 3 a.m. under the previous date. This site uses the calendar date as written on your birth record, which is the common practice.

Where is Moolank used on this site?

Moolank appears in more tools than any other number:

  • The name and mobile number calculators compare their result with your Moolank, reading the relation from your Moolank's row of the friendly and opposing table.
  • The Lo Shu grid adds your Moolank to the digits of your date of birth before placing them, as lesson 11 shows.
  • The compatibility calculator compares two people's Moolanks in both directions, alongside their Bhagyanks.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the whole date. Summing day, month and year gives Bhagyank, a different number. Moolank uses the day alone.
  • Swapping day and month. A date written 08/04 in the American style means 4 August, not 8 April. Read the wrong way, the Moolank comes out as 8 instead of 4. Bhagyank would not change, because the same digits are added, which makes this mistake easy to miss. The calculator has separate day, month and year fields for this reason.
  • Using a different date. Use the date in the place you were born, not the date in another time zone and not a birthday kept by the lunar calendar.
  • Stopping at 11 or 22. Reading "Moolank 11" mixes two ideas. The Moolank is 2; the 11 is an optional extra note.
  • Treating Moolank as the whole person. It describes first instincts. Bhagyank, the name number and the Lo Shu grid all add to the picture.

How to read your Moolank

  • Read the meaning as a description, then test it against yourself. The parts that fit are the useful ones.
  • Note the ruling planet; it connects Moolank to the rest of Indian practice, and the Vedic numerology lesson explains each graha.
  • Read the strengths and the watch-for points together. They are usually the same quality seen from two sides.
  • Keep the friendly and opposing numbers in mind for the next lessons, where Moolank meets Bhagyank, names and mobile numbers.
