Shukra, the planet Venus, is the graha of love, beauty and the pleasures of life in Vedic astrology: marriage, the arts, comfort and the ability to enjoy what one has. This page covers what Venus signifies, how its sign changes it, its friends and enemies, Venus in each of the twelve houses, its 20-year mahadasha, its transits, and the traditions linked with it.

The panel above lists Venus's correspondences, from its day to its gem, drawn from the same tables the site's calculators use.

What Shukra signifies

In the Puranas Shukracharya is the teacher of the asuras, a sage who knew the art of restoring life, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra makes Venus one of the two ministers of the planetary court alongside Jupiter. Where Jupiter advises by principle, Venus advises by what makes life worth living. Its karakatva, the things it signifies:

  • Love and marriage. Venus is the natural karaka of the 7th house and of the spouse. Classical texts read it especially for the wife in a man's chart; many modern astrologers read it for partnership in every chart, and this site notes both views.
  • Beauty. Appearance, grace, taste and the eye for what looks right. A strong Venus shows in someone who can make a room feel welcoming with a few small changes.
  • The arts. Music, dance, painting, design, poetry, fashion and performance. Venus is called Kavi, the poet.
  • Comfort and luxury. Good food, fine clothes, scent, a soft bed and the ease that money buys. Venus also signifies the capacity to enjoy these without guilt.
  • Vehicles. Tradition gives conveyances to Venus, with the 4th house, which is why it is read for cars and travel in comfort.

Venus is female, and its element is water. Its nature is soft, social and pleasing: it smooths friction, seeks agreement and prefers harmony to winning. Its shadow side is the same quality pushed too far: indulgence, vanity, or keeping the peace at the cost of the truth.

Venus never moves more than about 47° from the Sun, so it is often combust, close enough to be read as overpowered by the Sun's light. Some astrologers read a combust Venus as affection that is shown through duty rather than display.

Nature and strength

Venus's dignities, as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives them:

  • Exalted in Meena, deepest at 27°. Meena is compassionate, imaginative and devotional; there Venus's love becomes unconditional and its art becomes inspired. An exalted Venus is read as refinement with warmth.
  • Moolatrikona in Tula from 0° to 15°, and own sign for the rest. Tula is the sign of balance, fairness and partnership, Venus's social and diplomatic side.
  • Own sign in Vrishabha. Vrishabha gives Venus its earthy, sensual side: food, comfort, money and lasting possessions.
  • Debilitated in Kanya, deepest at 27°. Kanya analyses and corrects, which sits awkwardly with Venus's wish simply to enjoy. A debilitated Venus is read as love that shows itself through service and attention to detail, and sometimes as high standards that make it hard to relax. Many such people are excellent craftspeople, editors or carers.

Here is Venus's dignity in every sign, computed from the same rules:

Venus in each of the twelve rashis, from the classical dignities and the graha's natural friendship with each sign's lord.

Between these, Venus is graded by its friendship with the sign lord. In Mercury's sign Mithuna and Saturn's signs Makara and Kumbha it is in a friend's sign: witty and sociable in Mithuna, loyal and practical in Makara, friendly and unconventional in Kumbha. In the signs of the Sun and the Moon (Simha, Karka) it is in an enemy's sign: generous but proud in Simha, tender but moody in Karka. In the signs of Mars and Jupiter it is neutral.

Venus gains directional strength (dig bala) in the 4th house, the house of home, comfort and vehicles.

Friends, neutrals and enemies

In the natural friendship table this site uses, Venus counts Mercury and Saturn as friends, Mars and Jupiter as neutral, and the Sun and the Moon as enemies.

Venus's friendships with Mercury and Saturn are returned in full, and so is its enmity with the Sun. Two relationships run one way: the Moon is neutral to Venus, though Venus counts the Moon as an enemy, and Jupiter counts Venus as an enemy, though Venus is only neutral to Jupiter. That last is the old rivalry of the two teachers, Brihaspati and Shukracharya, seen from the side that minds it less.

The friendship with Saturn is worth noticing. The graha of pleasure and the graha of discipline get on well: Venus gives Saturn's work some grace, and Saturn gives Venus's pleasures some staying power. In a chart these friendships matter for Venus's comfort in another graha's sign, for how it combines with grahas beside it, and for its antardashas within other mahadashas.

Shukra in the twelve houses

Each reading below is a tendency, changed by Venus's sign, dignity and companions.

  • 1st house. Charm, a pleasant face and manner, care with appearance and a diplomatic way of handling people. Art and beauty are part of the identity. The work is to keep the wish to please from becoming the wish to be liked by everyone.
  • 2nd house. Sweet speech, a good voice, love of fine food and family wealth that grows through taste: jewellery, textiles, food or design. Spending on comfort needs a budget.
  • 3rd house. Artistic skill in the hands and in words: writing, design, media, music. Relations with siblings tend to be warm. Communication is charming and persuasive.
  • 4th house. Venus's house of directional strength. A comfortable, well-kept home, vehicles, an affectionate bond with the mother and contentment in private life.
  • 5th house. Romance, creativity, performing arts and enjoyment of entertainment. Love affairs and creative projects often go together. Children may be artistic.
  • 6th house. Work in beauty, hospitality, healthcare or service, and an ability to smooth workplace conflict. Tradition reads Venus as less comfortable here: indulgence in diet and friction between love and duty need watching.
  • 7th house. Marriage and partnership are central; the partner is often attractive, sociable or artistic. Some schools apply the maxim that a karaka in its own house can strain that house and read this as asking for care in choosing a partner; others read it as plainly favourable.
  • 8th house. Joint finances, wealth through a spouse or inheritance, privacy in love and interest in hidden or occult subjects. Tradition gives this placement some good results for long life and comfort.
  • 9th house. Fortune through the arts, beauty or women in the family; travel for pleasure; a refined, tolerant approach to belief.
  • 10th house. A career in the arts, design, fashion, media, hospitality, finance or luxury goods. Public charm helps reputation.
  • 11th house. Gains through social circles, the arts and partnerships; many friends and comforts fulfilled. Income often comes through people the person enjoys.
  • 12th house. Classical texts read Venus well here: comfort in rest and private life, enjoyment of travel and foreign places, and spending on pleasure and comfort. Devotional or spiritual art also suits it.

The Venus mahadasha

The Vimshottari Venus mahadasha lasts 20 years, the longest of the nine. It follows the 7-year Ketu mahadasha and leads into the 6-year Sun mahadasha. After Ketu's inward, detached years, Venus's period is often experienced as a return to the world: relationships, comfort, enjoyment and material growth.

General themes are love and marriage, the arts, money and possessions, vehicles and property, social life, pleasure and refinement. Because the period is so long, it often covers a whole stage of life. How it runs depends on three things:

  1. Venus's sign and dignity. An exalted or own-sign Venus tends to give comfort and relationships that come easily. A debilitated or enemy-sign Venus gives the same themes through more effort or adjustment.
  2. The houses Venus rules and occupies. For Vrishabha and Tula lagnas Venus is the lagna lord, and its period is about the self. For other lagnas it brings forward the two houses it owns, Vrishabha and Tula wherever they fall, and the house it sits in. For Makara and Kumbha lagnas, Venus owns both a kendra and a trikona and is read as especially supportive.
  3. Its companions. Venus with Saturn gives a steady, productive period; Venus with the Sun or Moon can bring a pull between pleasure and duty.

The nine antardashas, in order, with their lengths:

The nine antardashas of the 20-year Venus mahadasha, in order. Each one's length is the mahadasha's years times the sub-period lord's years, divided by 120.

OrderAntardashaLength
1Venus / Venus3 years 4 months
2Venus / Sun1 year
3Venus / Moon1 year 8 months
4Venus / Mars1 year 2 months
5Venus / Rahu3 years
6Venus / Jupiter2 years 8 months
7Venus / Saturn3 years 2 months
8Venus / Mercury2 years 10 months
9Venus / Ketu1 year 2 months

The opening Venus-Venus antardasha, three years and four months, is the longest single sub-period in the whole Vimshottari cycle. Venus-Sun (one year) and Venus-Moon (one year and eight months) follow, pairing Venus with its two enemies, and are read as times when authority or family duties ask something of personal pleasure. Venus-Saturn, three years and two months, joins two friends and is often read as one of the most productive stretches. Venus-Mercury, two years and ten months, is another friendly pairing, good for trade and creative work. The closing Venus-Ketu, one year and two months, brings a turn inward before the Sun mahadasha.

Venus in transit

Venus usually spends three to four weeks in a sign. About every nineteen months it turns retrograde for roughly six weeks, and around then it can stay in one sign for about four months. Its transits colour weeks and are read for relationships, social life, purchases, art and comfort.

Counting from the natal Moon, the tradition reads Venus's transit through the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th houses as favourable, more houses than any other graha, and through the 6th, 7th and 10th as less easy. Most astrologers give Venus's transit most weight during a Venus dasha or antardasha.

Shukra and numerology

In Indian numerology, Venus rules number 6, the number of everyone born on the 6th, 15th or 24th of a month. The number page describes the same warm, beauty-loving temperament from the numerology side. The tables part in places: the Sun and Venus are enemies in Jyotish, yet the numerology table makes 1 and 6 friendly. The number 6 page explains each difference.

Health in tradition

Jyotish links Venus with the reproductive system, the kidneys and the face, and with the body's capacity for pleasure and rest. Traditional readings therefore advise watching over-indulgence in rich food, sweets and late nights, and keeping comfort from turning into inactivity.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a chart replaces a doctor.

Traditional practices linked to Venus

Indian tradition associates several everyday practices with Venus. They are listed here as culture, not as remedies:

  • Friday observances, such as worship of Lakshmi, or the Santoshi Mata fast kept by some families in north India.
  • The Shukra mantra, such as "Om Shum Shukraya Namah", recited by some on Fridays, often alongside prayers to Lakshmi.
  • Wearing white or light colours on Fridays, a custom some families keep.
  • Respect for one's spouse and for women in the family, since Venus signifies marriage and partnership.

The diamond and silver are Venus's traditional gem and metal in the table this site uses. They are listed in the panel above for completeness. This site does not recommend buying gemstones or any object for results.

An illustrative reading

This is an example placement, not a real person's chart: Shukra at 8° Tula in the 4th house, with Karka lagna.

  1. Dignity. 8° Tula falls within Venus's moolatrikona range of 0° to 15°, the strongest dignity after exaltation.
  2. House. Counting from Karka, Tula is the 4th house, a kendra and the house where Venus gains directional strength. Venus in its own or moolatrikona sign in a kendra forms Malavya yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, read as a gift for comfort, taste and grace.
  3. Lordship. For Karka lagna Venus owns Tula, the 4th (home, mother, vehicles), and Vrishabha, the 11th (gains, friends). Sitting in the 4th, it links gains with home: income spent on property or comfort, or earned through work from home or in the arts.
  4. The lagna lord. Karka's lord is the Moon. Venus counts the Moon as an enemy, while the Moon is neutral to Venus. The person's emotional needs (Moon) and their idea of comfort (Venus) may not always match: home is beautiful, but not always restful.
  5. The dasha. In the Venus mahadasha these themes come forward: a home, a vehicle, a settled social circle. The Venus-Moon antardasha, one year and eight months, joins Venus with the lagna lord and would be read as a time when family and feelings ask for attention alongside comfort.

The reading describes strengths and tensions to work with. It does not promise a purchase, a marriage or a date.
