Uttara Phalguni is the twelfth of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 26°40′ of Simha to 10° of Kanya, ruled by Surya (the Sun), with Aryaman as its deity and the back legs of a bed as its symbol. It is the star of friendship, agreements and keeping one's word, and it crosses from the Sun's sign into Mercury's.
This page covers its deity and symbol, its nature, padas, the Moon placed here, the dasha it starts, work, relationships, matching and muhurta, with a worked example. The panel above lists its correspondences.
Deity and symbol
Uttara Phalguni is the second of the two Phalgunis, the pair of stars pictured as a bed. Purva Phalguni gives the front legs, the moment of relaxing into enjoyment; Uttara, "the latter", gives the back legs, which make the bed stand. Together they are a single image: pleasure is the start, commitment is what holds it up.
Its deity is Aryaman, one of the Adityas and a close companion of Mitra. Aryaman presides over friendship, hospitality and the customs and agreements that bind people and families together. In the Vedic hymns he is invoked at weddings, and the Bhagavad Gita names him as the foremost of the ancestors, which links this star to Magha's Pitris two places before it.
The back legs of the bed say the rest. They carry weight without being seen, and they matter most when the bed is in use for years rather than for a night. Uttara Phalguni people tend to work the same way: dependable, steady, willing to carry responsibility, and serious about promises.
Nature: gana, yoni and nadi
Uttara Phalguni's gana is manushya, the human temperament in matching: practical, social and balanced between the ideals of deva and the independence of rakshasa.
Its yoni is the cow (gau), which it shares with Uttara Bhadrapada. The cow is gentle, patient and giving, the animal that sustains a household, which suits a star of support and service. Its nadi is aadi, the first of the three; nadi is used mainly in matching, where two people of the same nadi score zero on that koota.
As behaviour, Uttara Phalguni's strengths are these:
- Reliability. It keeps its word, turns up when it said it would and finishes what it agreed to do.
- Generosity. It supports friends, colleagues and family in practical ways, often without being asked.
- Fairness. It cares about just terms, clear agreements and everyone getting their due.
- Steady leadership. With the Sun as lord, it can lead, but it leads by example and duty rather than display.
The shadow side is commitment held too rigidly: insisting on the letter of an agreement, taking on too much out of duty, judging those who do not keep the same standards, or finding it hard to change course once a promise has been made. In this site's words, the growth edge is flexibility: keeping faith with the spirit of a commitment while letting its form adapt.
The four padas
Each pada is 3°20′ and corresponds to one navamsa sign. Uttara Phalguni's padas fall in the last four navamsa signs, Dhanu to Meena:
The four padas of Uttara Phalguni: where each falls, its navamsa sign and its traditional naming syllable.
Pada 1, Dhanu navamsa (Simha 26°40′ to 30°). The only pada in Simha, with Jupiter's fire sign in the navamsa. The Sun rules both the sign and the star, and this pada is generous, principled and drawn to teaching and public duty.
Pada 2, Makara navamsa (Kanya 0° to 3°20′). Saturn's earth sign in Mercury's earth sign: the most practical and hard-working pada, good with structure, procedure and long effort.
Pada 3, Kumbha navamsa (3°20′ to 6°40′). Saturn's air sign turns the service of Uttara Phalguni towards groups, communities and fair systems.
Pada 4, Meena navamsa (6°40′ to 10°). Jupiter's water sign makes this the most compassionate pada, inclined to quiet service and care for others.
The naming custom gives a child a name beginning with the syllable of the birth pada: Te, To, Pa, Pi for padas 1 to 4. It is a custom, kept by many families and adapted or ignored by others, not a rule; spellings vary by region.
The Moon in Uttara Phalguni
When the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni at birth, it is the janma nakshatra, the birth star. The rashi depends on the pada: pada 1 is a Simha Moon, padas 2 to 4 a Kanya Moon. Both are friends' signs for the Moon, and the Moon and the Sun, the star lord, count each other as friends, so this is a comfortable placement.
An Uttara Phalguni Moon gives a mind that feels secure through commitment and usefulness. Such a person feels best when relied upon, and shows care by helping, organising and keeping promises. Friendships are long and loyal. There is a strong sense of fairness, and a dislike of broken agreements, carelessness and people who take without giving back.
The two signs colour it differently. In Simha the Moon is warmer and more open about its pride in its work. In Kanya it becomes more modest, exact and service-minded, sometimes anxious about doing things correctly. The Sun as star lord gives both a sense of purpose and a wish for respect earned through conduct.
At its best an Uttara Phalguni Moon is the friend everyone can count on. Under strain it can become rigid, overworked or quietly resentful of carrying others. None of this is fixed: the Moon's phase, its company and the rest of the chart all change the reading, as the moon sign lesson explains.
When the lagna falls in Uttara Phalguni, the same qualities show in manner: a dependable, courteous presence that people trust early.
Dasha at birth
The Vimshottari dasha begins from the lord of the birth star. A Moon in Uttara Phalguni starts life in the Sun mahadasha, which lasts 6 years in full. How much remains at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra: the fraction still to run, multiplied by 6, gives the balance.
Because the Sun's period is short, it usually ends in early childhood and gives way to the Moon's 10 years and then Mars's 7. A Sun period is read through the Sun's placement in the chart, described on the Surya page, and the Vimshottari lesson explains the whole cycle.
Work and money
Uttara Phalguni does well where reliability, fairness and service are valued. Common leanings, not prescriptions:
- Administration: government, public service, management and operations.
- Agreements: law, contracts, partnerships, mediation and human resources.
- Service: social work, healthcare administration, charitable and community organisations.
- Teaching and advising: roles where people come back because they trust the advice.
With money, Uttara Phalguni is steady and fair. It pays its debts, keeps its accounts and is generous to friends in need. The habit worth building is setting limits, so that generosity and duty do not leave too little for itself.
Relationships
In relationships Uttara Phalguni looks for commitment and partnership in the full sense: two people who keep their promises to each other. With Aryaman as deity, marriage, friendship within marriage and good relations between families matter a great deal. It shows love through loyalty, practical help and showing up.
The friction comes from duty. Uttara Phalguni may put obligations before feelings, or expect a partner to keep the same exacting standards. Saying what it feels as well as what it will do, and leaving room for spontaneity, make its relationships much warmer.
Compatibility
In Ashtakoot matching, four of the eight kootas come from the two birth stars: tara, yoni, gana and nadi. The table shows each of them for an Uttara Phalguni Moon against every nakshatra as the partner's birth star:
Uttara Phalguni with each of the 27 birth stars, as Ashtakoot matching reads them. Gana scores can differ by who is the man and who the woman; where they do, both are shown (man / woman for Uttara Phalguni). Four kootas out of eight, never a verdict.

Tara counts from one birth star to the other and back. Counts that leave 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by nine are unfavourable; favourable both ways scores 3, one way 1.5. Counted forward from Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha and Jyeshtha are the 3rd, 5th and 7th stars. By this count no pair can be unfavourable both ways, so Tara is always 3 or 1.5.
Yoni compares the animals. Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada, both cows, score the full 4. Chitra and Vishakha, both tigers, score 0, because cow and tiger are a classical enemy pair.
Gana scores 6 for two manushya stars and 0 for manushya with rakshasa. With a deva star it scores 6 or 5, depending on which chart is counted as the boy's.
Nadi scores 0 when both stars share a nadi. Uttara Phalguni is aadi, as are Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada, so a pairing with any of these, or with another Uttara Phalguni, carries what tradition calls Nadi dosha. Because this star spans two signs, two people can share it with different Moon signs, one of the classical exceptions; schools differ on such cancellations.
Nakshatra matching is four parts of an eight-koota method, and the eight kootas are one part of comparing two charts. No score is a verdict on two people. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.
Uttara Phalguni in muhurta
Muhurta, the choice of a good time, classifies the nakshatras by character. Uttara Phalguni is one of the four fixed (dhruva) nakshatras, with Rohini, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Fixed days are chosen for things meant to last: laying a foundation, building or entering a house, planting, signing a long agreement and, in many traditional lists, weddings. The image of the bed's back legs fits well: these are days for what should stand firm. The muhurta lesson explains how the day's nakshatra fits into a muhurta.
A worked example
Take a Moon at 4°50′ Kanya. This is an illustrative position, not a real person.
- Nakshatra. Uttara Phalguni runs from 26°40′ Simha to 10° Kanya, so 4°50′ Kanya is in Uttara Phalguni.
- Pada. The distance into Uttara Phalguni is the 3°20′ it covers in Simha plus 4°50′ in Kanya, that is 8°10′. Pada 2 ends at 6°40′ and pada 3 at 10°00′, so 8°10′ falls in pada 3, which in Kanya runs from 3°20′ to 6°40′.
- Navamsa. Uttara Phalguni's padas map to Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, so pada 3 is Kumbha navamsa. As a check, Kanya is a dual sign and counts its navamsas from the 5th sign, Makara: 4°50′ ÷ 3°20′ = 1.45, the second navamsa, and one sign on from Makara is Kumbha.
- Syllable. Pada 3 gives Pa.
- Dasha at birth. Uttara Phalguni's lord is the Sun, 6 years. The Moon has covered 8°10′ of 13°20′, that is 490′ of 800′, or 0.6125 of the nakshatra. The balance is (1 − 0.6125) × 6 = 0.3875 × 6 = 2.325 years, about 2 years and 4 months of Sun dasha remaining at birth, followed by the Moon's 10 years.
The reading: a Kanya Moon, modest and exact, with Uttara Phalguni's loyalty and sense of duty, the Sun as star lord, and a Kumbha navamsa that turns its service towards groups and fair systems. The growth edge stays Uttara Phalguni's: flexibility.
The neighbouring stars are Purva Phalguni before and Hasta after, and the nakshatra lesson lists all 27.
