Vrishabha (Taurus) is the second rashi of the zodiac, a fixed earth sign ruled by Shukra (Venus), spanning 30° to 60° of the sidereal zodiac, or 0° to 30° of the sign itself. It is the sign of stability and enjoyment, and the sign in which the Moon is exalted. The Sun enters it in mid-May each year.
This page reads Vrishabha as a Moon sign and as a lagna, through its three nakshatras and the grahas strong or weak in it, and in matching and transits. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences.
The nature of Vrishabha
Vrishabha's facts all point towards steadiness:
- Element: earth. Earth signs are practical and concerned with what is real, useful and lasting. They trust what they can touch.
- Quality: fixed (sthira). Fixed signs hold and sustain. Where Mesha starts, Vrishabha keeps going, and it resists being moved before it is ready.
- Symbol: the bull. A bull is calm until pushed, strong when it chooses to be, and content to graze. The image suits a sign that prefers patience to haste.
- Lord: Venus. Venus signifies love and marriage, beauty, the arts, comfort and vehicles. In Vrishabha it is in its own sign, so the sign carries Venus's love of pleasant, well-made things.
- Gender: female. Even-numbered signs are counted female in Jyotish, meaning receptive and conserving rather than anything about the person.
- Kalapurusha part: the face and throat. In the image of the zodiac as a cosmic person, Vrishabha is the face, the mouth and the throat: the places of taste, speech and singing.
Together these describe earth that has been cultivated: a field that feeds people because it is tended patiently. The other earth signs carry the element differently. Kanya is earth that is sorted and analysed, Makara earth that is built on; Vrishabha is earth that is enjoyed.
Venus rules number 6 in Indian numerology, so the number 6 page describes many of the same qualities from the numerology side.
Vrishabha as Moon sign (Chandra rashi)
The Moon is exalted in Vrishabha, so a Vrishabha Moon is one of the strongest Moon placements in Jyotish. It gives a calm, loyal mind that values comfort, beauty and routine. Feelings here are slow to rise and slow to fade; the emotional weather is settled rather than stormy.
The strengths show as behaviour:
- Steadiness. A Vrishabha Moon is often the calm person in a tense room, not because nothing touches them but because it takes a lot to move them.
- Loyalty. Friendships, workplaces and habits last. Once a Vrishabha Moon commits, it stays.
- Sensory intelligence. Food, music, fabric, scent and a well-arranged room matter, and a Vrishabha Moon notices them. Many have a good ear or a good palate.
- Patience with process. Saving, growing a skill or tending a garden suits this Moon, because it is happy to let results come in their own time.
The shadow side is steadiness that turns into resistance:
- Stubbornness. Pushed to change, a Vrishabha Moon may dig in harder, even when the change is sensible.
- Holding on. Possessions, people and routines are kept past their time, sometimes out of comfort rather than love.
- Slow anger, long memory. It takes a lot to anger a Vrishabha Moon, and it can take as long again for the anger to go.
- Comfort as escape. Food, shopping or familiar routines can become the answer to discomfort that would be better faced.
The growth edge is letting go when change is overdue. The Moon's phase, its nakshatra and its company all modify the reading, as the Moon sign lesson explains.
Vrishabha as lagna (ascendant)
With Vrishabha rising, Venus becomes the lagna lord. A Vrishabha lagna gives a composed presence, a liking for good things and a slow, dependable pace.
Classical descriptions mention a sturdy build, a strong neck and shoulders, attractive eyes and a pleasant voice. Treat these as tradition; appearance depends on far more than one sign.
Others usually see someone calm, polite and unhurried, who will not be rushed into a decision and who keeps their word once it is given. The same manner can read as immovable to people who want a quick answer.
The Vrishabha lagna sets out the chart in a distinctive way:
- Venus rules the 1st and 6th (Tula), so the lagna lord also governs work, service, health routines and competition.
- Saturn rules the 9th and 10th (Makara and Kumbha). A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona is called a yogakaraka in Parashari practice, so Saturn is read as the most helpful planet for this lagna, linking fortune with career.
- Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th (Mithuna and Kanya), joining wealth, speech, intelligence and children. Mercury is Venus's friend, which strengthens the link.
- Mars rules the 7th (Vrishchika), so partners are often more intense and direct than the Vrishabha native.
The lagna lesson explains how the rising sign is calculated.
The nakshatras of Vrishabha
Vrishabha holds parts of three nakshatras, each of 13°20′ divided into padas of 3°20′:
The nakshatras and padas that fall inside Vrishabha, with their Vimshottari lords and their degrees within the sign.
Krittika padas 2 to 4 (0° to 10°), lord Sun. Krittika's symbol is a flame or razor and its deity Agni. In Vrishabha its sharpness lands in a steady sign: people with this Moon are direct and hard to fool, and protective of what they value, with more patience than Krittika shows in Mesha. Its gana is rakshasa, an independent temperament.
Rohini (10° to 23°20′), lord Moon. Rohini, the cart or chariot under Brahma, is called the Moon's favourite nakshatra, and it sits entirely inside the Moon's sign of exaltation. It is a star of growth, beauty and attraction: people with a Rohini Moon draw others and resources to them and like to build something lasting. The growth edge is sharing rather than holding. Its gana is manushya.
Mrigashira padas 1 and 2 (23°20′ to 30°), lord Mars. Mrigashira, the deer's head, is under Soma. It adds a searching, curious note to the last part of Vrishabha: gentle, soft-spoken, always looking for the next thing. The fixed sign gives the search somewhere to rest. Its gana is deva.
The nakshatra lesson covers all 27.
Grahas in Vrishabha
- The Moon is exalted here, most deeply at 3°. This site, following Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, counts 4° to 30° as the Moon's moolatrikona, so the whole sign is a place of strength for it. An exalted Moon is read as emotional security, a nourishing nature and public goodwill. The Chandra page explains what the Moon signifies.
- Venus is in its own sign. Venus here is sensual, loyal and practical about pleasure: good food, good company, things that last. Its other sign, Tula, is its moolatrikona.
- No graha of the seven is debilitated in Vrishabha.
Rahu and Ketu are where the schools part. Many exalt Rahu in Vrishabha and debilitate Ketu here; others use Mithuna and Dhanu instead. This site does not settle the question and shows the note on the graha pages.
Other planets are read by how each regards Venus. Mercury and Saturn count Venus as a friend and are comfortable here. Mars regards Venus as neutral. The Sun and Jupiter count Venus as an enemy, so in Vrishabha they work through a sign whose values are not their own.
Work and money
Vrishabha does well in work that builds value slowly and rewards care and taste. Typical fits, as tendencies:
- Money and assets: banking, accounts, investment management, property.
- Food and land: agriculture, food businesses, hospitality, dairy.
- Beauty and craft: design, fashion, jewellery, interiors, cosmetics.
- Voice and art: singing, music, speaking and teaching, given the sign's rule over the throat.
What drains Vrishabha is constant upheaval: shifting targets, frequent moves and work with nothing solid at the end of it.
With money, Vrishabha is usually a natural saver and a sensible builder of assets. The habit to watch is spending on comfort and quality beyond need, and holding on to an investment out of attachment rather than judgement.
Relationships
In love Vrishabha is affectionate, loyal and physical. It shows care through comfort: a good meal, a well-kept home, presence rather than speeches. It wants security and continuity, and gives them in return.
The friction comes from possessiveness and from resistance to change. A partner who wants to move city, change routine or talk through every feeling may find Vrishabha slow to respond. Saying yes to small changes early, and naming feelings rather than waiting for them to pass, helps a great deal.
The 7th sign from Vrishabha is Vrishchika, ruled by Mars, so Vrishabha is often drawn to intensity and depth in a partner.
Compatibility and kundli matching
Varna, vashya and Bhakoot come from the two Moon signs, and Graha Maitri from the friendship of their lords. The table shows the Bhakoot result and the lord friendship for a Vrishabha Moon against each sign:
Vrishabha with each Moon sign, read the way kundli matching reads it: Bhakoot from the distance between the two signs, and the friendship of their lords. One koota among eight, never a verdict.
| Partner's Moon sign | Distance | Bhakoot | Lord friendship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 12/2 | 0 of 7 | 3 of 5 |
| Vrishabha | 1/1 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Mithuna | 2/12 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Karka | 3/11 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Simha | 4/10 | 7 of 7 | 0 of 5 |
| Kanya | 5/9 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Tula | 6/8 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Vrishchika | 7/7 | 7 of 7 | 3 of 5 |
| Dhanu | 8/6 | 0 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
| Makara | 9/5 | 0 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Kumbha | 10/4 | 7 of 7 | 5 of 5 |
| Meena | 11/3 | 7 of 7 | 0.5 of 5 |
Bhakoot depends only on distance. Signs 2nd and 12th from Vrishabha (Mithuna, Mesha), 5th and 9th (Kanya, Makara) and 6th and 8th (Tula, Dhanu) score 0 of 7; the others, Vrishabha itself, Karka, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha and Meena, score 7.
Lord friendship compares Venus with the other lord both ways. Venus counts Mercury and Saturn as friends, the Sun and the Moon as enemies, and Mars and Jupiter as neutral. Mercury and Saturn return the friendship, so Vrishabha with Mithuna, Kanya or Makara has a zero Bhakoot that tradition reads as cancelled by friendly lords; with Tula the lord is the same, also read as a cancellation.
The opposite case is Simha: full Bhakoot, but Venus and the Sun regard each other as enemies, so Graha Maitri scores nothing. That is a difference of style, Venus valuing comfort and the Sun valuing recognition, not a fault in either.
Moon-sign matching is part of the eight kootas, and the kootas are part of a full chart comparison. No pairing is a verdict. The Ashtakoot lesson explains all eight.
Health in tradition
Tradition gives Vrishabha the face and throat, and its lord Venus is linked with the reproductive system, the kidneys and the face. Classical readings advise a Vrishabha native to look after the throat and voice, to keep rich food and sweets in proportion, and to keep the body moving, since the sign's comfort with routine can become comfort with sitting still.
This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a sign replaces a doctor.
Transits for a Vrishabha Moon
Counted from a Vrishabha Moon:
- Sade Sati runs while Saturn crosses Mesha (12th), Vrishabha (1st) and Mithuna (2nd). Saturn is debilitated in Mesha, the first phase, and counts Venus and Mercury as friends, so the later phases fall in friendly signs. Tradition reads the whole period as one of responsibility and slower, lasting results. The Sade Sati lesson explains it fully.
- Dhaiya falls when Saturn crosses Simha (4th) or Dhanu (8th).
- Saturn's favourable houses, the 3rd, 6th and 11th, are Karka, Tula and Meena. In Tula Saturn is also exalted.
- Jupiter's yearly transit is read as favourable through Mithuna (2nd), Kanya (5th), Vrishchika (7th), Makara (9th) and Meena (11th), where it is also in its own sign.
Read transits with the running dasha, never alone; the transits lesson gives the full table.
A worked example
Take a Moon at 15°00′ Vrishabha, an illustrative position, not a real person.
- Nakshatra. Krittika covers 0° to 10° of Vrishabha and Rohini 10° to 23°20′, so 15°00′ is in Rohini.
- Pada. The distance into Rohini is 15°00′ − 10°00′ = 5°00′. Pada 1 runs to 3°20′ and pada 2 from 3°20′ to 6°40′, so this is pada 2, which in Vrishabha runs from 13°20′ to 16°40′.
- Navamsa. Rohini's padas map to Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Karka navamsas, so pada 2 is Vrishabha navamsa. The Moon is in the same sign in the rashi chart and the navamsa, which is called vargottama and read as added strength.
- Birth dasha. Rohini's lord is the Moon, so Vimshottari begins in the Moon mahadasha of 10 years. The Moon has covered 5°00′ of 13°20′, that is 300′ of 800′, or 0.375. The balance is (1 − 0.375) × 10 = 6.25 years: 6 years and 3 months of Moon dasha remaining at birth.
The reading: an exalted Moon in the moolatrikona part of its sign, in Rohini, vargottama, and starting life in its own dasha. Tradition would call this an unusually steady and well-supported mind, with Rohini's warmth and pull towards building something lasting. The growth edge stays Vrishabha's: letting go when the time has come.
