Guide

What this calculator does

Moolank (मूलांक) is the single digit hidden in your day of birth. It is the first number an Indian numerologist looks at, because it describes your instinctive nature: how you think, react and present yourself. The idea is explained in full in lesson 5, Moolank: your root number.

How is Moolank calculated?

  1. Take only the day of your birth date. Ignore the month and year.
  2. If the day has two digits, add them together.
  3. Keep adding until a single digit from 1 to 9 remains.

Every day of the month falls under one Moolank:

MoolankBorn on the
11st, 10th, 19th, 28th
22nd, 11th, 20th, 29th
33rd, 12th, 21st, 30th
44th, 13th, 22nd, 31st
55th, 14th, 23rd
66th, 15th, 24th
77th, 16th, 25th
88th, 17th, 26th
99th, 18th, 27th

Only the 19th, 28th and 29th need two rounds of adding (lesson 3 covers reduction).

Worked example

Born on 29 August 1994:

  • Day of birth: 29
  • 2 + 9 = 11
  • 1 + 1 = 2

Moolank = 2, ruled by the Moon. Notice that 11 appears on the way. Some numerologists treat 11 as a master number. The Moolank card never shows a master-number note; the Bhagyank calculator adds one, and only when the whole date totals exactly 11, 22 or 33.

A second example

Born on 19 December 1985:

  • Day of birth: 19
  • 1 + 9 = 10
  • 1 + 0 = 1

Moolank = 1, ruled by the Sun; the "How it was calculated" line reads "Day: 19 → 10 → 1". Month and year play no part. The same date gives a Bhagyank of 9 (1 + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 36, and 3 + 6 = 9). In the site's table 1 and 9 each list the other as friendly, so nature and path are read as pulling the same way. Lesson 7 explains how to read such pairs.

How to read your result

The card reads from top to bottom:

  1. The number and headline. The one-line character of the number, for 1 "The leader: original, self-driven and confident."
  2. The Moolank reading. The paragraph below is written for this role: how the number shows in everyday behaviour.
  3. Facts. Ruling planet, keywords, lucky colours, lucky days and friendly numbers. Friendly numbers come from your number's row of the relations table; anything not listed is neutral or opposing.
  4. Strengths and Watch for. How the number tends to show at its best, and the same qualities pushed too far. For 1, "Takes the first step" sits beside "Finding it hard to delegate".
  5. Read the full profile. A link to the number's own page, such as number 1, which covers work, relationships and timing in depth.
  6. Vedic attributes. A folded panel with the ruling planet's gemstone, metal, favourable dates and direction: for 1, ruby, gold, the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th, and east. These are traditional correspondences listed for learning. Nothing in it is a remedy or something to buy.
  7. How it was calculated. The day and every reduction step, so you can check the arithmetic.

The share link carries only the number, never your date of birth.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the month or year. That gives the Bhagyank, a different number with its own calculator.
  • Stopping at two digits. 29 gives 11, which is not finished. A Moolank is always 1 to 9.
  • Taking the Vedic direction as your personal direction. The direction in the panel belongs to the planet. Personal favourable directions come from the Kua number, which uses birth year and gender, and the two often differ.
  • Reading one number as the whole person. Moolank is the surface. Read it beside your Bhagyank, and treat the meaning as a lens, not a verdict.

Where do numerologists disagree?

  • Compound days. Some readers give the 19th or 28th a reading of its own, so a 19 is not read exactly like a 10. The calculator shows the single digit; each number page describes how its dates differ.
  • Master days. A few practitioners keep 11 and 22 as master Moolanks. This site reduces them to 2 and 4.
  • The day boundary. Some Indian practitioners count the day from sunrise, so a birth at 3 a.m. belongs to the previous date for them. This calculator uses the calendar date on your birth certificate.
