Number 7 in Indian numerology is the number of Ketu: it stands for the inner life, study, research and questions about meaning. It is the Moolank of everyone born on the 7th, 16th or 25th of a month, and it can also be a person's Bhagyank, name number or mobile number total.

This page goes through 7 in depth. The panel above lists its traditional correspondences, which come from the same table as every result card on this site.

Why does Ketu rule number 7?

Indian numerology gives each number from 1 to 9 to one of the nine grahas, and 7 goes to Ketu. Ketu is not a body in the sky but the Moon's south node, yet Jyotish counts it as a graha. In the old story Ketu is the headless body of the demon who drank the nectar of immortality. It signifies detachment, spirituality, the past, research, sudden insight and moksha, liberation.

Number 7 borrows that character. A body without a head is read as action without craving, and a 7 often stands slightly apart from what others are chasing. It is more interested in why something works than in owning it.

Ketu's friendships and where the table stands

The classical texts give the seven visible grahas a settled table of friends and enemies. They do not give one for Rahu and Ketu, and schools differ. Some read Ketu through the sign it occupies, and a well-known saying in Jyotish holds that Ketu acts like Mars. So for 7 there is no single graha list for the table to follow or depart from.

What the table does is follow common numerology practice:

  • Friendly: 7 counts 1 (the Sun), 4 (Rahu), 5 (Mercury) and 6 (Venus) as friendly. 4 and 6 return the friendship, so 7 with 4 and 7 with 6 are mutual.
  • Opposing: 7 counts 8 (Saturn) as opposing, while 8 is neutral to 7.
  • Neutral: 2, 3, 7 and 9.

Two points are worth stating plainly. If the table followed the saying that Ketu acts like Mars, 7 would not count 5 as a friend, since Mars treats Mercury as an enemy; the table does not follow that saying. The 2 and 7 pair is also disputed. Jyotish says the nodes eclipse the Moon, and the table follows that from 2's side: 2 counts 7 as opposing. Cheiro, working with a Western scheme in which 7 belongs to Neptune, went the other way and treated 2 and 7 as closely linked numbers. This site records both views.

Is 7 a difficult number?

Much of the world calls 7 lucky. Some Indian circles call it difficult, because Ketu signifies loss, separation and renunciation. Neither claim holds up on its own. No number is lucky or unlucky. What Ketu gives is a pull away from the surface of things, which can feel like dissatisfaction in a busy life and like clarity in a quieter one.

What is a number 7 person like?

The strengths of 7 show up as behaviour more than as personality labels:

  • Analysing. A 7 is often the one who reads the whole contract, checks the source of a claim, or asks the question that shows a plan has a gap.
  • Going deep. Where others skim, a 7 stays with one subject for years and becomes the person others consult.
  • Sudden insight. Ketu is linked with flashes of understanding. A 7 often solves a problem after leaving it alone, on a walk or after sleep.
  • Calm detachment. In a crisis a 7 can step back and see what actually needs doing.

Every number also has a shadow side, the same qualities pushed too far:

  • Withdrawal. A 7 may go quiet for days, which others may read as coldness when it is only the need for time alone.
  • Keeping things private. A 7 may reach a conclusion and never share it, then feel misunderstood when others act differently.
  • Scepticism turning into cynicism. Questioning everything can become trusting nothing.
  • Overthinking. A 7 can research a decision until the moment passes.

None of this is fixed. Numerology describes tendencies; the growth edge for 7 is connection: sharing the insight instead of keeping it private.

Born on the 7th, 16th or 25th

All three dates give Moolank 7, but practitioners read them differently, because the digits of the date show what sits underneath the 7. The Chaldean tradition also gives each two-digit total its own reading:

  • 16The towerCheiro pictured 16 as a tower struck by lightning, a sign of plans that can change suddenly. Traditionally it is a warning number, which this site reads as a caution rather than a forecast. As the total of a name or date it can show as ambitions overturned by the unexpected, often when confidence runs ahead of preparation. Build with margins, plan well in advance, avoid over-confidence, and treat a setback as information for the next attempt.
  • 25Strength through experienceCheiro read 25 as strength gained through experience and through careful observation of people and things. Its rewards do not come easily: early trials and difficulties come first, and success arrives after the lessons are learned. As the total of a name or date it often shows as someone who grows into authority over time, which makes this a number of maturity. Treat the hard early chapters as training; the strength built there tends to be well grounded.
  • 34Strength through experienceRead like 25: strength gained through experience and through careful observation of people and things. Early trials and difficulties come first, and success follows once the lessons are learned, which makes this a number of maturity. As the total of a name or date it often shows as someone who grows into authority over time rather than starting with it. Treat the harder early chapters as training; the strength built there tends to be well grounded.
  • 43UpheavalTraditionally 43 is an unsettled number: Cheiro linked it with revolution, upheaval, strife and plans that are blocked or need restarting. This site reads it as a caution rather than a verdict. As the total of a name or date it can show as periods of disruption in work or circumstances, where progress comes in starts and stops. Practically, it is a call for patience, firm foundations and plans flexible enough to survive a change of conditions.
  • 52UpheavalRead like 43: an unsettled number that tradition links with upheaval, strife and plans that need restarting, read on this site as a caution rather than a verdict. As the total of a name or date it can show as periods of disruption, where progress comes in starts and stops. Practically, it is a call for patience, firm foundations and plans flexible enough to survive a change of conditions.
  • Compound readings follow the Chaldean tradition and are under review.
  • Born on the 7th. The purest form of the number. Ketu comes through directly: reflective, private and drawn to study.
  • Born on the 16th. Underneath are a 1 (the Sun) and a 6 (Venus), both counted friendly by 7. The Sun adds confidence; Venus adds charm. Cheiro called 16 "the tower", a warning number of plans that can change suddenly. It is read as advice to build with margins and avoid over-confidence, not as a prediction. These 7s are often the most visible and ambitious of the three.
  • Born on the 25th. Underneath are a 2 (the Moon) and a 5 (Mercury). The Moon adds intuition; Mercury adds a quick mind. The reading of 25 is "strength through experience": early trials that turn into later strength, which makes it a number of maturity. These 7s often find their footing later, and then hold it.

Number 7 as your Moolank

Moolank, the root number, is read from the day of birth alone and describes temperament: how you meet the world day to day, before life experience has added anything. A Moolank 7 child is often the one who reads under the covers, asks "but how do we know?" or plays happily alone for hours. As adults, Moolank 7s listen, observe and speak when they have something worth adding. Colleagues and friends often describe them as thoughtful, hard to read at first, and the right person to ask when a problem is genuinely difficult.

Number 7 as your Bhagyank

Bhagyank, the destiny number, is read from the full date of birth and describes the direction life keeps pulling you in rather than your temperament. With Bhagyank 7, that direction is understanding: study, specialised knowledge, and in many lives a turn towards spiritual or philosophical questions.

Someone with an outgoing Moolank, say 3 or 5, and Bhagyank 7 may spend their early years in busy, social work, then find a specialism or a practice of meditation slowly becoming the centre of their life.

Number 7 as a name number or mobile number

As a name number, 7 gives a name depth and a sense of expertise. It suits a researcher, a writer, a consultant or any practice where people come for specialised knowledge.

As a mobile number total, 7 is read as a quiet number, suited to someone who uses the phone for focused work rather than constant contact. Tradition reads it as most comfortable when your Moolank or Bhagyank is friendly to 7. Treat this as a small factor; a phone number does not decide outcomes.

Work and money

A 7 tends to do well wherever depth and independence come together:

  • Research and science: laboratories, data analysis, history, and work where the answer has to be found rather than given.
  • Technical specialism: software, engineering or diagnostics, where a 7 is the one called in when nobody else can fix it.
  • Writing, philosophy and advanced teaching, where a subject is explored in depth.
  • Spiritual and healing work: astrology, yoga, meditation teaching, counselling, or religious study, all close to Ketu's themes.

What drains a 7 is noise and surface: open offices, constant meetings, sales targets and work that rewards self-promotion over substance.

With money, a 7 is often less driven than other numbers. The habits to watch are undercharging for real expertise, and spending freely on books, courses or equipment while neglecting savings.

Relationships and compatibility

In relationships a 7 is loyal, honest and quietly devoted, and shows care through attention: remembering what you said months ago, understanding what you meant rather than what you said. In return a 7 needs space. A partner who reads every silence as rejection can make a 7 withdraw further.

The friction usually comes from distance. A 7 may assume their feelings are obvious. The strongest relationships for a 7 are with someone secure enough to give them room.

Here is how 7 relates to each number, read from both sides of the table:

How 7 relates to each number. The table is read from both sides, because tradition does not always make a pairing mutual.

A few pairings are worth a word:

  • 7 and 4: Ketu and Rahu, the two nodes, and friendly in both directions. Both think differently from the crowd; the 4 builds systems, the 7 asks why they work.
  • 7 and 2: the table is not mutual. 7 is neutral to 2, while 2 counts 7 as opposing, following the Jyotish idea that the nodes eclipse the Moon. A 2 wants closeness and reassurance; a 7 wants space. Cheiro treated 2 and 7 as closely linked numbers, so some schools read this pair more warmly than this table does.
  • 7 and 8: the table is not mutual either. 7 counts 8 as opposing, while 8 is neutral to 7. The 8 is driven by results, the 7 by understanding; the pair works when each respects that the other measures success differently.
  • 7 and 1: 7 counts 1 as friendly, while 1 is neutral to 7. The 7 admires the 1's decisiveness; the 1 respects the 7's knowledge without needing it. The same one-sided pattern holds for 7 and 5.

For two whole profiles, Moolank and Bhagyank together, use the compatibility calculator. No number pairing decides whether a relationship succeeds.

Health in tradition

Jyotish reads Ketu as linked with hidden or puzzling conditions: problems that are slow to diagnose or hard to name. Traditional readings also tell a 7 not to ignore the body while living in the mind.

This is tradition, recorded for learning. It is not medical advice, and nothing in a number replaces a doctor.

Timing: days, dates and personal years

Tradition gives 7 its own times:

  • Days: Monday and Tuesday. The seven-day week has no day of its own for Rahu or Ketu, so schools borrow. Monday, the Moon's day, reflects the old link between 7 and 2; Tuesday, the day of Mars, reflects the saying that Ketu acts like Mars.
  • Dates: the 7th, 16th and 25th of any month, the dates that share the number.
  • Personal years: a personal year 7 is a year of reflection and learning, when inner work pays more than outer push. For a person whose Moolank is also 7, it is read as an especially natural year for study, retreat and deep work. A personal year 8, Saturn's year of achievement and finances, can feel loud and demanding to a 7; it is a year for letting earlier study show results in the world.

The personal year calculator works out which year of the cycle you are in.

Number 7 in the Lo Shu grid

In the Lo Shu grid, 7 sits in the middle of the right-hand column. That places it on two planes: the emotional plane (3-5-7) and the action plane (2-7-6). It is not on either diagonal. Its presence is read as analysis, and as the ability to learn from experience, including disappointment. On this site the Moolank is also placed on the grid, so every Moolank 7 has at least one 7.

  • One 7 is read as a reflective, analytical mind that learns well from experience.
  • Two 7s are read as a strong pull towards study and inner life, sometimes with a sense of being set apart.
  • Three or more 7s are read as very deep introspection, which can tip into isolation, and some practitioners say lessons tend to come through experience rather than advice.
  • No 7 means reflection and analysis are learned rather than instinctive. It does not mean a person cannot think deeply, only that the habit of stepping back is practised, not automatic.

Traditional practices linked to Ketu

Indian tradition associates several everyday practices with Ketu. They are listed here as culture, not as remedies:

  • Worship of Ganesha, whom many practitioners associate with Ketu.
  • The Ketu mantra, recited by some on Tuesdays or during Ketu's period in a chart.
  • Meditation and pilgrimage, linked with Ketu as the graha of moksha.
  • Feeding stray dogs, a popular custom associated with Ketu in some households.

The cat's eye (lehsunia) is listed as Ketu's traditional gem. For the metal, the panel says "mixed metals": schools assign Ketu different metals, so the table does not pick one. The direction is shown as south-west, which this table gives to both 4 and 7, since many tables pair the two nodes there; some schools place Ketu elsewhere. This site does not recommend buying gemstones or any object for results.

A worked example

Take a person born on 16 May 1987.

  1. Moolank: the day is 16, and 1 + 6 = 7.
  2. Bhagyank: 1 + 6 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 37, then 3 + 7 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
  3. The compound behind the Moolank is 16, "the tower".

The reading: a 7 with a 1 and a 6 underneath, so Ketu's depth with the Sun's confidence and Venus's charm. The relation between the two numbers is not mutual: from 7's row, 1 is friendly; from 1's row, 7 is neutral. That is read as a person who welcomes a destiny of independence, though it asks for more visibility than their temperament would choose. Life is likely to reward expertise turned into work with their own name on it, such as a practice or published writing, and the compound 16 adds its counsel to build with margins. The growth edge is the 7's usual one: sharing what they know instead of keeping it private.
